to Dubai, if you have been away
for the summer as I have. We spent fourteen weeks in Portugal and it seemed to go by at lightening speed. We played many
different courses in gorgeous weather and we were sorry to leave all that behind. However, we are back in Dubai for a new season, new Captains, and, having just played the Mixed Season Opener, we are excited about the months ahead and glad to have been part of the official start to the season.
Congratulations to Club Captain, Moshe Kohli and to Lady Captain, Glynis Hendry also to incoming Vice Captains, Dick Purchase and Barbara Head. I think the season ahead is going to be full of fun and there may be a few late nights involved, judging from today’s Season Opener! A lot of effort goes into organising these tournaments so please support the Club events and do try to stay for the presentations as this really makes a difference.
March 2013 is the 25th Anniversary of the existence of Emirates Golf Club and Moshe has already coined an expression which you will hear very often this season, ‘The Year of Celebration’ and it will be too. Some of us have been members for all 25 years and have supported the Club’s many competitions and social events during that time. Someone made a remark to me the other day that she was getting bored with the competitions etc after ten years. My answer…” try doing it for 25 years”. Having said that I have enjoyed every moment at the Club. This is where we have all made solid friendships, played our best (and our worst) golf, and enjoyed many social occasions. Tom and I even had our wedding reception here at the Club 22 years ago and what an absolutely fantastic day and evening that was. Exactly one year earlier, Past Captain Paul Thornberry and Bernadette had their actual wedding service at the Club…another major!! There is so much history associated with EGC after 25 years and we all have great stories and photos. Please feel free to email me on [email protected] with any memorable moments/occasions you have experienced over the years as well as any photos so I can feature these in Club Life in the run up to the 25 anniversary.

Welcome back from the summer holidays and I hope we all are looking forward to a great golf season ahead. This is
the 25th season at EGC and we are in our Silver Jubilee Year so, let this be the “Year of Celebration”. I am certain that with our Lady Captain Glynis, with members’ participation, and with the unflinching support of Richard Purchase and Barbara Head our Vice-Captains, we shall try and put together a memorable time at the Club.
I welcome all new members who have joined our Club this summer. Let me assure you that we may have the top 100 golf course here, but it is us members and the Club management who make us the number one Golf Club in the world. I am certain that you will enjoy being a part of this family. It was a pleasure to meet some of you at the welcome party for new members, and for those of you who could not attend, I look forward to seeing you at the Club. May I kindly request you to meet me when you play your first tournament so that you can be appropriately introduced to other members.
I also welcome the new members of the Members’ Consultative Committee (MCC). Let me assure you that this is a great platform for sharing views. It may be slow, but a lot of good work has been done in the past and a lot will be done in the future. We welcome suggestions from all members.
I am grateful that entry fees for member competitions are being reviewed, and in
many cases they will be sponsored or paid for by the Club. The Pros tournament was a huge success and I am certain that the free clinic for members, once a month will also be a tremendous success.
October is the month of ‘ownership’... ownership of dress code, repair of divots, pitch marks, bunkers, not only of our own but also people around us. This is our Golf Club and we can choose to either ignore all forms of etiquette or do what we would expect from our Club and its elite members. May I request you all to put this into practice personally and not leave it to anyone else.. Marshals and officers of the Club are there to assist us, but most times we can take the polite initiative ourselves. This is our Club, and we would love to maintain its high standards and traditions.
We must thank wasl for their continued support of our premier Club and investing so much money, firstly in refurbishment of the Clubhouse, and then the irrigation system this summer. We greatly value their inputs and much appreciate their commitment.

Members Consultative CommitteeAt EGC, a Members’ Consultative Committee meets regularly to discuss the general operation of the Club, to hear feedback from members, and to provide a link between members and management.

The Committee is not involved in the actual administration or finances of the Club, but concentrates on service and facilities, and how management can best serve the membership. Management will continue to operate its ‘open door’ policy to ensure that every member has a voice and enjoys a sense of belonging to his or her Club.

Moshe started playing golf at the age of eight and currently plays to a handicap of seven and is passionate about Emirates Golf Club, which he proudly proclaims as the finest in the world.
Despite being born in ‘the home of golf’, St. Andrews and studying at St. Andrews University, Barbara only started her golf in Dubai at EGC where she has been a member since 2002.
With a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University in Montreal, for the past 20 years Eric has developed expertise as a dynamic brand builder and sales driver. He delivers training in both English and French and is an accomplished trainer.
Born and brought up in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Glynis has been an active member at Emirates Golf Club for over 10 years.
Pavan spent his childhood in Dubai where he picked up golf at the age of 16 but then spent a number of years in USA so his golf deteriorated there with the six months of cold weather and snow. He moved back to Dubai in 2003, and he is convinced that this will be the year of the elusive single-digit handicap.
Jaimal is currently the Country Representative Head for Ecobank in MENA/India. He is a passionate member of Emirates Golf Club and apart from golf, has also run a marathon and cross-country competitively in the US and played Junior National Polo in India.
Dick is the regional Vice President for the chemical company, BASF. His passions are fine wines and fast cars! Dick has been a member since 2002 and plays as often as his travel schedule allows.
Rosemary has been a member at Emirates Golf Club for four years but has been in the UAE since 1997. She is an active member of the ladies section and is currently the Club Champion, Singles Matchplay Champion and won the Gross Lady Golfer of the Year.
Originally from Scotland, Alan took up the game as a schoolboy and joined Emirates Golf Club in 1993. “I have made many lasting friendships at the club and I am very proud to be a member.”

LADIES’ COMPETITION RESULTS
A big welcome back to everyone after the long summer break, and hope you all enjoyed fantastic vacations! I can’t believe it is already nearing
the end of September, and the ladies’ season is beginning to pick up speed. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Caroline Jones, our outgoing Lady Captain, for her outstanding contribution to our ladies’ section, I would love to follow in her footsteps and serve you at Emirates Golf Club as well! I will of course do my best to achieve this and I look forward to your continued support, friendship and sportsmanship along the way, in what will be Emirates Golf Club’s 25th Anniversary Year, a most exciting time for all. Our Lady Vice-Captain is Barbara Head, and I’m sure you would all like to join me in welcoming her; I very much look forward to working with Barbara, and the rest of the wonderful Emirates Golf Club staff.
It was a nice easy introduction back into competition golf at the Club with an individual stableford on the Faldo, on Monday 10th September. It was still extremely hot, so well done to all the members who braved the conditions. Big congratulations to all the winners! The scores were quite amazing so early in the season with Ruth Hatton beating Fiona Berry on a count-back both with 41 points.....quite outstanding!
This was followed by a Texas Scramble the following Monday, where popular winners, as always, were Rosemary Turlik, Jenny Ayres and last year’s Lady Captain, Caroline Jones. Obviously, they kept up their golfing form over the summer break so well done!
September’s Monthly Medal was hard fought as always, when the first Golfer of the
Year and Curtisy Cup points were well and truly earned. Special congratulations go to Rosemary Turlik, who won best gross with 82 and Najla Bartette who won not only the Silver division best net, but also the Luckiest Ball on Earth competition, run alongside the Monthly Medal, which qualifies Najla to take part in the final at Jumeirah Golf Estates to win a Pro-am place in the 2012 DP World Tour Championship. Wishing you the very best of luck!
The Mixed Season Opener takes place on September 28th, which I very much look forward to.....but not the Captain’s drive-in! The Ladies’ Season Opener is on Monday 1st October, which officially begins our season.
Mondays are already getting extremely busy, even during October which includes the Ladies’ Seniors Championship, and our Pink Ball Charity Tournament on 22nd. This is our opportunity to make a small difference to a local breast cancer charity, Breast Cancer Arabia which provides much needed cancer treatment to women who would otherwise be unable to finance their vital care. Raffle tickets will be on sale at the Mixed Season Opener until the day of the charity tournament. If any individual or company would like to make a donation or provide a raffle prize, please contact me. Any contributions will be gratefully received.

Recognising Your Child’s Potential in Golf
One of the greatest things about golf is that you can play the game your whole life. Being able to start the game at a young age is also a big advantage.
How many times have you heard adults say, “I wish I had started at his age.” Learning the game of golf at a young age is obviously a good thing and playing good golf at a young age is even better. The question for many parents is whether their child is just a good player, or does that child have a chance to be a great player. Recognising a junior golfer’s potential isn’t easy, especially if the parents aren’t golfers themselves.
The first thing to remember, before we even talk about a child’s potential, is encouragement. All juniors start golfing because someone encourages them to play the game. It may be a parent, friend or coach. This encouragement, along with access to clubs and a course, is the key. So remember to encourage the junior throughout his or her career
When looking for potential in junior golfers, you have to remember that each junior is going to grow and learn at different rates. Some junior golfers don’t score as well simply because they can’t hit the ball as far as other kids their age. Many times that’s just because they’re physically smaller.
So when you’re looking at your child’s potential at a young age, don’t just look at their scores. Watch how they play the game, see how they chip and putt, and look at their shot selection.
A short-hitting junior usually has a pretty good short game. They realise they can’t hit as far as the rest of the players their age, but they have also figured out that they can make up for it by chipping and putting well.
Many juniors understand the game instantly, while most kids are just trying to hit the ball as far as they can. That is a sign of real potential.
As a junior golfer gets older, tournaments become more important, whether it’s a Junior programme tournament or the Junior Club Championship.
This is where it’s very important for parents to encourage and not push. Ultimately it has to be the junior’s decision to play, and not the parents’ decision. We’ve all heard the horror stories about the parents who push too hard, and the kids who simply put their clubs in the cupboard never to play again.
Even with that said, one of the only ways to see how much potential a player has is for that golfer to play against his or her peers. Parents should encourage them to play in as many events as possible if that’s what they want to do. Remember, a child being nervous before a potential tournament is normal, dreading going to the tournament is not.
Potential to be a good golfer begins to show at these small events. If the junior does well and likes it, the potential is there. Many good golfers are not tournament players; the stress of competitions is not for everyone, which can be seen at every level.

In the first Professionals Day event to be played since 2001 a fun day was had by all, with Chris Turlik and Johnny Aldridge shooting a net 60.5 in the pairs scramble format around the Majlis Course to take the top prize. Their fabulous score card
included 10 birdies and 9 pars which claimed a 1st prize trip to Dubai Golf’s new venue Almouj Golf at The Wave Muscat, Oman. The day included various events on the course including Trackman longest drive, nearest the pins, Beat the Pro, Powerplay and a fun Happy Gilmore shot on hole 18. The Runners up spot was taken by club Captain Moshe Kohli and partner Naema Maya with a great score of 60.9 net which won them a weekend break courtesy of The Media One Rotana Hotel. 3rd place was taken by Keith Prosser and Tony Hutchinson
Welcome to Andre Fourie Grove, our new Spike Bar Restaurant
Manager. Andre hails from Cape Town, South Africa and with his keen interest in sport, namely golf and cricket, he is very well suited in his new role. With plenty of experience in the F&B industry, Andre joins us from the Nezusaussi Sports Restaurant at the Al Manzil Hotel in Downtown Dubai

Manager for Le Classique and M’s restaurant. Hailing from Paris and with many years’ experience in the hospitality industry, having worked for Sofitel, Pullman, Radisson and the Margaux restaurant in Souk Al Bahar, Camille
brings his passion for service and fine beverages to the Club.
We have a new Golf Professional who has joined The Academy from Royal County Down in Northern Ireland. Bryan Smith leaves his position as Head Assistant there to join Emirates Golf Club in a dual role. He will be available in the Pro Shop for 50% of his time to assist members with equipment, club fittings and clothing requests and the other half of his time will be spent teaching. I know he will be an excellent fit for the Club and a very good addition.
Finally we welcome Mohammed Al Shaibani who joins the Golf
Operations team as our Golf Experience Manager. Mohammed will be making sure everyone is well looked after at the Club and will be on hand to resolve any issue that you may have.

Former EGC Junior Tom Green
For those of you who I haven’t yet been fortunate enough to meet, I am Tom Green, previously a member of
Emirates Golf Club and currently a third year student on the Applied Golf Management Studies (AGMS) program at the University of Birmingham. I hope that through this article I can give an account of my journey so far and my plans for the future.
Before University I spent four great years in Dubai improving my game under the guidance of Middle East based coaches Mark Gregson-Walters and Jamie Wood. As a product of this I was able to reduce my handicap by 18 shots from 16 to +2 and gained competition experience through the fantastic UAE Junior and Men’s Order of Merit Series.
Having completed my training at the PGA National Training Academy at the Belfry, I am now fully qualified as a Level 2 golf coach, club fitter and club repairer. Having worked with Ramsey McMaster, Matt Bridge, Ben Langdon and Mark Bull, some of the leading golf specific fitness specialists in the world, I have become a big advocate of the importance of fitness in golf. On this token my dissertation will explore the effects of a golf specific fitness program, using the McMaster Fitness Systems equipment
on golf biomechanics. The AGMS program also gives students the opportunity to complete a summer work placement, which I have taken full advantage of. For my first work placement I worked at Royal Liverpool Golf Club the 2013 Open venue, where I gained experience in retail, junior coaching and golf operations as well as honing my skills on the famous, and very challenging links. I am currently in Italy working at Castiglion Del Bosco Golf Club, a highly exclusive private
members club in Tuscany. So far working at the club, which is part of a five star estate, has
been
great experience, as I have been exposed to the highest level of customer service standards matched by only a handful of golf clubs worldwide. Looking to the future I am very excited about my prospects. In September I am hoping to turn professional, which opens up a world of opportunity in both playing and coaching. I have also had the opportunity to take up a freelance coaching role in the Birmingham area in conjunction with Barclaycard, so am beginning to build a client base so that I can hit the ground running with this project when I get back to the UK in September.
At the moment I am trying to keep my options open for after University but I am hoping to return to the Middle East in the near future. The Gulf region and particularly Dubai offers the perfect combination of world class golf courses, excellent practice facilities and expert coaching expertise which is something that I would like to be part of, because I would love to provide an opportunity for children and adults alike to learn the game in the fantastic environment that I benefitted from as a junior. I appreciate that I would never have been in the position that I am today without the experiences that I had in Dubai and in particular at Emirates Golf Club and would really like to give back to golf in the region which gave so much to me and built the foundations for a career doing something that I truly love and am passionate about.

John Robert Milton Lewis was the first Club Captain at Emirates Golf Club for the year 1988-89 and was seconded onto the Board of Directors
after the Club opened. His wife Trish was the first Lady Club Champion in 1988-89, the year that John was Captain. When he left he went back to his estate in West Sussex, and subsequently moved to Australia. He was a great lover of wines, and was, by virtue of his job, very close to HH Sheikh Hamdan. A keen golfer, off about 12, he was always recognisable around the driving range for wearing a towel around his neck, tucked into his shirt like a necktie/cravat.
Our condolences go to John’s wife, Trish and family.

Speed up play by filling in score cards and putting on your glove when someone
else is teeing off.
Nobody likes to witness someone
‘losing it’ on the golf course, examples being, throwing clubs swearing, shouting or
getting moody because of a bad round. It may
seem OK for that particular player to let off steam
but it is extremely uncomfortable and off-putting for the other
players in the group.
Turn off your mobile phone on the golf course.
Keep it on silent and check it from time to time if you must but only return urgent calls. In

Please use the cart paths where indicated and do not drive your buggy on the sand. So often we see players driving up to the
side of greens and driving into desert areas. We all like to play our courses in
the best condition so it is our responsibility to use the carts only
in the designated areas.
Enjoy your golf and above all, make it enjoyable for your playing partners
and other groups on the course by observing the points above.

We have added some more activities timetable including Aqualates & Bollywood Dancing. Please book these classes at the Sports Desk.Corinna Metzler, the resident Aqualates instructor has a pilates background and finds the class great fun and beneficial for the muscles and joints. Aqualates tones legs, abs, and back and also strengthens muscles, improves posture, improves coordination and balance and increases flexibility.
This class takes place on Mondays 9am – 10am.Meghna Naidu, one of Bollywood’s most dynamic performers and actresses, launched The Meghna Naidu Dance Academy at Emirates Golf Club this month. With a career that includes more than 30 blockbusters in India, and having travelled the globe performing at sold out arenas in Europe, The Americas, Asia, Africa and Australia, Meghna finally settled in Dubai. The main purpose of MNDA is to introduce Bollywood Dance to a global audience and to the expat community in the UAE. Bollywood dancing is a fusion of a number forms of dance such as Classical Indian, Hip Hop and more. It is a high energy dance style where participants can burn off between 600 to 800 calories in a one-hour session. Meghna will be conducting classes personally on Sunday 5 to 7 pm, Tuesdays 5 to 7 pm and Thursdays 5 to 7 pm at Emirates Golf Club. Morning classes are also available for stay-at -home mums. The 5 to 6pm time slots are for children, followed by adults from 6 to 7pm.
