Edition 2008, Volume 4 July-August, 2008 UPCOMING CLUB MEETINGS: Thursday, July 17, 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 21, 7:00 p.m. Meetings held at the Good Foods Co-op Community Room, 455 Southland Drive Sure, the warmer weather makes it a little easier to get out the door for a run in the morning, but that’s not the only thing it’s good for. In addition to the many races in which BLUEgrass Runners com- peted this spring and early summer, we also took time off the road and track to enjoy each oth- ers’ company, our state’s beautiful natural surround- ings, and good food (ice cream is good food, right?!). On June 7, a BGR group headed to Elkhorn Creek in Frankfort, KY for a 12-mile canoe trip. Led by Bruce Carey and Mary Nagle, the group canoed six miles down river, stopped for lunch to fuel up, and then paddled another six miles. Everyone had a great time, but a few club members admitted to being unable to control the urge to paddle faster in order to beat the oth- ers to the stop. Apparently you can take the runner out of the race, but you can’t take the race out of the runner! On June 21, a group of 17 gathered at Leo and Sue McMillen’s home to celebrate the Summer Solstice. And, what better way to celebrate the long- est day of the year than by eating an ice cream sundae? (More pictures of this event are on Page 2.) Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society. This year, BLUEgrass Runners teamed up with the New Balance Store to participate in Lexington’s annual relay. The 24-hour event started at 5 p.m. Friday, June 13 and took place at the Lexington Christian Academy on Reynolds Road. This is not a race but an event to raise money and awareness, and the goal is to keep at least one team member in motion on the track throughout the event. Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day, cancer will be eliminated.

At this year’s event, Friday night was almost a wash out. With rain, wind and lightning creating un-safe conditions, the ceremonies and the survivor walk were moved into the LCA gymnasium, and many participants decided not to endure the night. This was the first year that I myself chose to go home mid-relay.

Despite the bad weather, the Relay was a success and our team raised $3,700 for the American Can-cer Society. As of July 1, $240,000 had been collected in total for the Lexington event.

I want to thank all involved this year – Amy Friskney, who was team co-captain and Chuck Griffis representing the former New Balance Store now named John's New Shoes Plus. I want to thank Keiko Buckner for getting the tent and stuff organized on Saturday and helping me load up. Others I want to thank who participated were Debbie & Bill Goodman, Norma Lundy, Louise Hensley, Mary Stebbins, Shannan Gabe, Leo McMillen, Dick Jeffries, David Caywood, Mary Nagle, and Debbie Jackson.

I have enjoyed my time as team captain representing our club for this important cause and feel it is time to pass the responsibilities of BLUEgrass Runners Relay for Life team captain on to others. If you’d like more information, please contact me at [email protected] or 859-361-0071.

How FAR will you GO for a marathon? by Mike Lesshafft

I know Tom Hackney has gone to Singapore, and Dan Wells has gone to Germany. But how many people would go to Fargo, North Dakota for a marathon (May 17, 2008)? Dan Wells, Lisa Dahl, and I did. Dan and I flew to Minneapolis to meet up with Lisa and two other friends who came in from Boston. [By the way, three of the five are trying to run a marathon in all 50 states. Keep that in mind as it will be important later.]

We then drove the 3.5 hours from Minneapolis to Fargo in a rented van. We had all day Friday to get there (the race was Saturday morning) so we asked a native from the area what interesting sights there were between Minneapolis and Fargo. He thought for a moment and then said, “There is nothing between Minneapolis and Fargo. And there is nothing when you get there.” I don’t mean to offend any Fargonians, but he was cor-rect. It was a pretty drive though. Thank good-ness I had good company to entertain me since I was driving. I could have died of boredom. If you have ever seen the movie Fargo, it is just like that. Except I did not see any wood chippers.

The race itself was very good. The course is flat and scenic. It starts and ends at the Fargo dome (about the size of Memorial Coliseum) which is very convenient from a logistics standpoint. All the people were very friendly and helpful. Even the police officers, which in many races are stern faced bas-tions of sheer boredom, were upbeat, cheering and waving to all the runners. There were 1,427 marathon finishers and 3,691 half marathoners. So it was a good-sized race.

The weather was fantastic if you could ignore the gale force winds. Well, maybe not that bad, but there was a severe wind alert during the race. I almost got blown over one time, but that was when I was walking just past mile marker 25

Club members Dan Wells and Mike Lesshafft with Michael Pomeroy of Boston, MA at the start of the Fargo Marathon

drinking a margarita. Yes, I was having a very bad race day (my worst ever). So when offered a marga-rita it seemed only appropriate to imbibe. It was only about one inch in the bottom of a small paper cup (no salt on the rim), but it was the principle that counted. Although I complained about the wind, it did not seem to affect my colleagues. Lisa and Dan finished close to what they expected. I unfortu-nately was 30 minutes off my anticipated finish time. And you know what that means. For any of you that have been towards the back of the pack you know what I am getting at: Food.

That is right. They were out of pizza and beer when I finished. Very disappointing. Yes, they had pizza and beer for the “early” finishers. This is why speed training is so important. You need to get to the fin-ish before the goodies are gone. Or you could just run the half-marathon and get there sooner. How-ever, I did get an ice cream sandwich, which was awesome. But we had to check out of the hotel, so I had to hurry (relatively speaking) back to the hotel which was just across the parking lot from the finish line. Good logistics thanks to Lisa Dahl’s planning. Got a quick shower and then had to fight the wind again to get my luggage to the car. The drive home was just as exciting, yawn. We were able to find a quaint sports bar in downtown Alexandria, MN to have supper and watch the Preakness. Not sure they knew the Preakness was being run that day. But they sure did after we left.

All in all it was a wonderful trip, thanks to good company. If you are going for a marathon in all 50 states, then I definitely recommend the Fargo Mara-thon. If you are looking for a marathon to include in a vacation trip, forget Fargo.

10 July-August 2008

It is 5:56 am Monday, May 26, 2008. Memorial Day.

My mind focuses on my early morning run, but my thoughts are interrupted by unfamiliar sur-roundings. I am not in Lexington, but on vaca-tion in downtown Manhattan. I groggily look at the clock, hit my cell phone alarm before it alerts me to wake up, and leap out of bed. As I begin my race day ritual I reach for my race number, however, I remember that I must pick up my packet at the race site—at Staten Island.

I make my way to the lobby of the hotel, and the doorman warns me that it may be challenging to hail a cab on this uneventful holiday morning. Not too concerned, I ponder that 20 minutes should be plenty of time to arrive at the ferry that will transport me to Staten Island. Ten minutes later, I am anxious, antsy, and apprehensive as the cab pulls up. “My ferry leaves in 10 min-utes,” I shout as I jump in the cab. “No prob-lem,” the driver says, “I will have you there in five.”

Staten Island Memorial Day Four-Mile Run by Rana Johnson True to his word, the cabbie gets me to the ferry

in time to notice others sitting around waiting. It appears to be pretty crowded for a holiday. I am informed that the ferry is delayed. After a thirty-minute wait, my ferry crosses the New York Bay to Staten Island. I exit the ferry and take bus #51 to Father Capodanno Boulevard. I consider my hour and twenty minute commute using three modes of transportation for a four-mile race as I arrive at the packet pick-up. This was my second race in 8 days—I am a bit of a running junkie—it was worth it!

The Staten Island Memorial Day Four-Mile Run stretched along Father Capodanno Boulevard from Sand Lane to Miller Field before doubling back to the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Boardwalk along the beachfront. Approximately 1,200 run-ners and walkers competed in the annual event, marking the unofficial start of summer on Staten Island. This was a small, scenic, and fast-paced race. The final two miles along the boardwalk offered a tranquil view of the bay. Next year, if you happen to be in New York for Memorial weekend, I highly recommend this race.

11th Annual Biltmore/Kiwanis 15K Race by Rana Johnson

This mid-May race in Asheville, North Carolina is extraordinary! The must-run race takes place on the Vanderbilt’s historic Biltmore Estate, beginning at the winery. While the first mile is flat and downhill, runners are tested during the next 3-4 miles to conquer two challenging hills before the course loops up and around the Biltmore mansion. Running up to the majestic home is a metamorphic experience—you will quite possibly believe that you have stumbled into a fairy tale and discovered a 19TH century mansion. At first glance you may be distracted, as well as overwhelmed, by the beauty of such an incredible structure. As you run alongside the garden with flowers of various hues, you are tempted to stop, however, you continue running. As you run past the front door and turn left at the island of flowers, you experience one final urge to glance over your shoulder for a final peak at the real-life castle.

As you pass through the wrought-iron gate, you descend into the picturesque gardens and trails lined with beautiful springtime blooms. The last several miles of the race offer runners a downhill course complete with the quiet splendor you enjoyed during the start of the race. Before reaching the fin-ish line, you are met with one final hill as you ap-proach the winery. The roads are completely closed for traffic, and runners are surrounded by the tranquil majesty of the Biltmore Estate. I highly recommend this race. Make sure you take a camera!

Runners approach the Biltmore Mansion.
