President’s Letter — by Skip Holmes

Well it is April 16, 2014 and just three days ago I was riding my bike in shorts and the temperature was 78 degrees.

Today, as I write this month’s article, it’s snowing and blowing out there. Where is spring and when is summer going to come? It’s the beauty of living in the great northeast!

Club rides are really filling up the calendar for the month of May. There are a number of new ride leaders who are planning rides and if you show up on one of their rides, thank them for leading a ride.

The first weekend in April, the Tour of the Battenkill was held, and I saw many MHCC members out marshalling a corner and several were driving pace or wheel vehicles. The thousands of racers who were out there greatly appreciated your assistance in making a safe race weekend.

We are starting the planning for the 2014 Century weekend and David Liebschutz has volunteered to coordinate the event. It’s September 6th and 7th this year, so put the dates on your calendar now. He’s going to need assistance, so consider getting in touch with him to discuss how you can help make the Century weekend a success. Volunteers make this a great event and they get free a registration to the weekend.

We still have openings for ride leaders who would like to take the Red Cross first aid and CPR training and get reimbursed for the cost of the training. See last month’s BikeAbout or the web site for details.

In this issue there is an article that we include at the beginning of each riding season called ‘Riders of the Pack’ Take a moment to read it and reacquaint yourself with road riding etiquette. Both your fellow riders and motorists will appreciate you for it.

Get your bike out, tune it up and RIDE it!

Ride safe!

Riders of the PackSkip Holmes, MHCC President

During the past cycling season a number of riders developed endurance, strength and speed. They may have also learned how to ride and share the road with vehicles, dogs and pedestrians. However they may not have learned the etiquette of riding in the pack.

There are a number of guidelines that will allow us to ride safer this coming season. What follows are some helpful hints from the League of American Bicyclists.

E BE PREDICTABLE: Your actions affect those around you, not just yourself. Other riders expect you to continue on a straight line and maintain speed. Signal your intentions either with voice or hand commands before making any sudden moves. When changing from a standing position to a seated position on a climb remember that you will slow down as you stand up and the person on your wheel may not be watching you.

E GIVE WARNINGS: Ride leaders and riders should call out turns and stops in addition to signaling. Announce turns before the intersection to give other riders a chance to get into position.

E CHANGE POSITIONS CORRECTLY: Announce when passing a slower rider on the left or right. Say” on your left or right”. Try to pass on the left when possible.

E ANNOUNCE HAZARDS: Let the riders behind you know when there is a pothole or other hazard in the road. It helps to point out the hazard as well. When riding in a pack the riders behind the leaders do not have a good view of the road.

Riders should let others know when there is traffic behind the pack and ask them to get into single file. Say “car back.” When riding in a large group and there are cars trying to pass get into single file as quickly as you can to enable the car to pass. Drivers in cars do not understand how long it may take 30 riders who are riding double to get into a single line. Make room for the other riders to find an opening either in front of behind you to tuck into. It is also helpful to let riders know when traffic is ahead and call out “car up.”

E MECHANICALS: When you have a mechanical problem let those around you know so that they can let you pull off the road safely. If someone else has a mechanical ask them if they need assistance and let the ride leader know that someone has pulled off.

For many of us this may seem like old news. There are some who may forget on occasion. For those new to riding in a pack how else will we get them to know the pack rules. Lets help those new riders learn to ride better and safer this season. See you out on the road.
