Welcome everybody to the first match of the season and the first time I have put pen to paper for ‘On the Trail’ . Can I first give my and the Club’s thanks to David Barker who has stepped down as President after two terms of heading the club through a very successful period both in rugby and in the structural development of the club. I am afraid I cannot match his erudition and style in his programme notes but I will try! For those who do not know, I have been at the club since the early 70’s when I was lucky enough to play with a very good Wilmslow team who had great success over several years. I played mainly 8 or 7- many times with David and around 10 times for Cheshire- I even played prop against Fran Cotton (the days of no subs!) – the less said on how I got on! Then I played on the Vikings and Vets – I think my last competitive game was around 1992. Enough of me! We welcome Broughton Park to the first game of the season – both of us had an average season last year – good results against good teams and several slip ups when we should have won. Honours were even last year between us so I look forward to this game. My games against BP were always hard fought – a very hard aggressive pack – Ledbetter/Jackson/Barratt/Neary et al – ( my style!) but I have been watching over the last few years and have noticed that with coaches like Kevin O’Brien, the move to a better pitch and clubhouse, and new laws, their rugby has got more expansive and open – so I look forward to an exciting match and a beer afterwards. A first game is always exciting and nerve wracking, as you are unsure how the team will emerge. I have watched several training sessions this summer and have been very impressed with the turnout and the training methods to get the players into top shape. Several of last season’s players have moved on to pastures new. In the present game and with its set up, player mobility is ‘de rigueur, if you wish to test yourself at a higher level. Nevertheless, we have attracted several good new players and with the continuing excellence of players from our outstanding junior section; it will be interesting to see how this season’s side goes. I will also be following very closely the other senior teams- Vikings, Hawks and Raptors, who all had a good season last year. I saw some good exciting games. There has been a very good structure developed to link the teams closer together with player development etc and I look forward to seeing further improvements. On a wider scale, the club, headed by Dave Scanlon as Chairman has continued to improve the infrastructure. This year you will see new superb showers, at least if you’re a player you will, a new physio building and several other minor improvements. The club’s recent commitment to an excellent and enjoyable venue for everyone from the youngest minis to the oldest seniors, supporters and visitorsc is something, that as your president, I am proud to endorse.

Under 14s Helene Evans and her U14 squad have every reason to look forward to an exciting season. At the last count, ten of her squad of thirty players were called up by Cheshire for county training, four of them, Matt Currie, the twins Thomas and Dominic Butler and Helene‟s own son, Jonny progressed to the Sale Sharks School of Rugby. Jonny Evans has also been selected to joing the Elite Player Development Group. The squad is drawn from local boys attending a number of different schools but strangely none of them go to what is arguably now the strongest rugby playing school in the region—Wilmslow High. Helene is well aware of this and together with her coaching team of Mark Beale, Mark Webber and Tony Heagerty, they will be trying to attract some Wilmslow High players to join them. The squad‟s administration is carried out by Karen Zafar.

Under 16s The U16s are chomping at the bit waiting for the new season to start, writes Martin Hill. At this level, the game allows lifting in the line out and annoying scrum halves as far as the back foot at scrum time. To learn these black arts, we have engaged the mighty Daz Lucas to drill them in these and other ‟grown up‟ tactics.

This season, as I write, we welcome one new player - Tom Lee a lightening quick wing from the High School. Tom was previously a round ball player at WHS before deciding to switch to the oval code. He‟s very welcome and we wish him every success in the squad. The largest contingent in the squad comes from WHS but eight other schools are also represented. Inevitably some of these players will be competing for places in their school 1st. or 2nd. teams and given the nature of school rugby today, we expect that there will be some unavailability from time to time.

Add to that the demands of representative rugby, which may prevent the side from settling. We shall be without our first choice stand off, Dicko, for much of the early season as he has been called up by North Wales. Sam Lawton and Rory Hill are already in the county squad and we expect others to participate in county trials in mid October. Congratulations to those already selected and the best of luck to our other trialists. The season starts with away fixtures at Sandbach and Stockport on 11th and 25th September.

Former Wolves scrum half, Charlie Mulchrone, makes a break for Cheshire against Lancashire in the county

championship last May. In an entertaining game, Lancashire

took control in the last quarter to run out winners by

37-17.

In their other two matches, Cheshire enjoyed wins against Yorkshire and Warwickshire.

Charlie and his brother Fergus were then both selected for the England Counties

unbeaten tour of Spain in early June, appearing together in the second match against Castilla Leon and the final test match against Spain, in which Charlie scored

two of the Counties seven tries.

Congratulations to Elliot Brierley, who was capped by the England Counties U20s in their inaugural fixture at West Park Leeds last May against Scotland U20, narrowly

losing by 18-15. Giles Heagerty the North U20s backs coach was present. Elliot, after an outstanding season here last, has now signed a professional contract with

Rotherham Titans. We wish him well.

Another former Wilmslow colt to play International U20s rugby last season was Hamish Watson, now with Leicester, who was selected by Scotland.

It seems an age ago since the final game of last season at

Broughton Park, whom we welcome today. So much has

happened, and changed in that time. Not least, the off field

changes to our facilities that continue unbound with new

showers, new physio facilities and to come new indoor

practice facilities within the squash courts. Not only that but

the 1st XV have a new home in the changing rooms where

they are able to steel themselves away before matches.

On field I am delighted to welcome Bryn Lewis and Rob Cowley into the coaching team.

They will be working together to manage the teams and coach the forwards. Please give

them your support.

Those of you who have witnessed practice or seen our preseason matches will also have

noticed a number of new faces in the squad. I have worked very hard over the summer to

bring in new talent, but we have also been blessed with players coming through our own

ranks from the senior colts. Our squad has been bolstered throughout and there is a

growing feeling of confidence across all four teams.

It has been a tough preseason, with one of our new players telling me that the fitness has

been similar to that he experienced in National 1. There is no doubt that our skill levels

have improved and that we aim to play with more structure and even a little more

pragmatism when needed.

I must say that I have enjoyed this preseason more than any before. Thanks to my

enforced break through illness early in the off-season I was able to plan things better than

ever. It has been also a summer of achievements for me, in completing my Level 3

coaching badge and being appointed Backs Coach to England Under 18s Clubs and

Schools. It is my hope that I will see some of the junior section players come through

those ranks. I would not have been able to achieve these things without the continued

support of my wife and family, and also from the Club. I thank you all.

One thing we have worked hard to build over the past two years is the culture of ‘One

Club’. I was delighted with the success of the Senior Player and WAGS barbeque in

early August and I look forward to the next social get together on the 17th. The

importance of off field support cannot be understated.

Finally then we get to it, the first whistle. All the hours of toil have brought us to this

moment where we see whether the things worked on will come to fruition. The squad are

clear on what their goals are for this season, but I have always said that we know nothing

until that first whistle blows.

Enjoy the game today and the season to come.

I shall start the season with a quote from Vince Lombardi, the legendary coach of the

Green Bay Packers, “Players who aren’t

fired with enthusiasm will be fired with enthusiasm”

I do hope that our teams today, all of them, are really enthusiastic about the

new season. I know the supporters are and

hope that we can get off to a good start against our old adversaries, Broughton

Park.

Changes to the league, as a result of

last season’s promotion and relegation, mean that we said “Vale”

to Altrincham/Kersal, Burnage, West Park St.Helens, Kirby Lonsdale and New

Brighton. The last of these being a salutary lesson to all Club match card officials. Leigh were for the drop, but New Brighton played an unregistered player at the

end of the season and were docked five points, which put them below Leigh.

Which brings me to another aspect of club conduct; discipline. Although we had

two citings, both on our day of doom away at Wirral in January, we were towards

the bottom of the “offenders” pile, with no fewer than eleven teams having more visits than Wilmslow to the Disciplinary Committee meetings. Punching, kicking

and stamping were the main reasons for red cards, but there were no fewer than

seventeen instances of “Official abuse”, including a punishment, for a player from Prenton, of thirty six weeks for physical abuse of a referee. The point of

mentioning these statistics is to draw attention to the significant increase in these cases and the determination of the County to come down hard on future

miscreants, whether they be players, coaches or supporters (including myself, who

will be a changed man) please note.

On a happier note, I am delighted to see the improvements to the changing rooms.

Although the players have had to suffer training with no showers until a couple of weeks ago, the new showers must be the best outside of the Midland Hotel - I hope

there is enough hot water for everybody. As I write, the new physiotherapy room is

nearing completion and Joe Booth and his colleagues will, at last, have room to move. Sadly, there is more building work to be done when funds allow. The brick

wall at the back of the beer store is collapsing under the pressure and damp of the

earth outside and needs to be rebuilt. It is staggering that it has lasted so long, as it is not even a cavity wall and has no footings.

I would like to finish with another quote. This one from athlete Jesse Owens, “Friendships formed in the field of athletic strife are the real gold of competition.

Awards become corroded, friends gather no dust”.

Ave atque Vale The close season has seen the usual number of comings and goings. New players include Sam Cutts, Andrew Walker, Mark Taylor, Samuel Luckett, Harry Stott, Chris Findlow, Aaron Loftus, Hugo Corbett, Gareth Tait, Craig Cooper, Matt Lister and Rick Spencer. Graduating to the senior section from the colts are Sam Rodman, Ben Jones, Ed Finch and Sean Street. Several of these are not strictly new to the club having had connections with this club for many years. The South Manchester rugby community is condensed into a fairly small geographical area and many of these players will already have known some of their Wilmslow counterparts. Notwithstanding, all are very welcome. We hope that they enjoy their rugby here and that whichever team they play on, they enjoy a successful campaign. It is also pleasing that four of last season’s colts, I understand, should have so far signed up. If anyone has been excluded, it’s because I haven’t caught up with everyone yet.

It is also inevitable that at Level 6, there will be players who will want to move on to National League rugby. In that respect, we have become something of a gateway club for promising younger players, where two or three seasons in the Wolves has proved to be an ideal preparation. In recent seasons, Chris Jones, Charlie Mulchrone, Ryan Parkinson and now Elliot Brierley , Chris Lillie and Harrison Lewis have all moved on to a higher level. Sadly, Josh Longmore has also left us, feeling that his game would benefit by a move to Stockport. His brother, Ollie, has now been awarded a rugby scholarship at Northumbria University so congratulations to him even though it means his availability for the Wolves will undoubtedly be adversely affected. We should take some satisfaction that so many good players have either started their rugby career or spent a stage of it at this club. Let’s hope that amongst this season’s intake, there will be other National League aspirants and that this will be the season

in which the Wolves can seriously challenge for a National League place themselves.

Giles Heagerty The more observant of you will have noticed Giles wearing an O2 tracksuit top with the English rose as a badge. This is because he has been appointed as backs coach for England U18s. Congratulations to Giles, to whom we wish every success in the role but not against Scotland or Ireland. Wins against Wales and France, of course, will be just fine! Seriously though, the club should be delighted that its coach has landed such a prestigious appointment.

KPMD Group James Keys quickly established himself as a quality back row forward when he arrived here two seasons by way of Ulster, Donegal and Letterkenny, which we were quickly reminded by Peter Poizer was where one of Wilmslow’s most colourful post war captains had retired and been instrumental in setting up the rugby club there. Because of that connection, it is especially nice that the Keys family through their business should be the Wolves principal sponsors this season.

Jimmy Toole Contracts Summer is the time when the indefatigable Jimmy Toole gets out his tools in the cause of refurbishing our club. This time, there has been a major improvement to the changing room block with a complete new shower room now installed. Alongside, the changing rooms a new physio centre has also been erected, complete with access for an ambulance in the unfortunate event that this is needed. Over recent seasons, our facilities - club rooms, car parking, terracing, stand(ette), bbq equipment et al. - have changed for the better out of all recognition. Let’s hope that the playing side, seniors, colts, juniors and minis alike can now respond with a season that will delight us all.

The season is upon us. After 8 weeks of intense training gone are the long Saturdays of brooding around the house, waiting for the autumn to come. My aim for this season is promotion and I want to do this playing the expansive, fun rugby that made the Vikings such an enjoyable team to play for last year.

The turnout for preseason training has been brilliant and if we can survive the traditional student exodus all four squads will be in strong positions.

For the Vikings the start of the season is tough. All our games in September are away and the first three of these are against new opposition. With four home games over the vital Christmas period (weather permitting) some good early results will set us up nicely for a promotion push.

This season’s junior colts should be an interesting side. As U15s, many of them were part of the Wilmslow High School team which

beat Wellington College to win the Daily Mail Cup just eighteen months ago. At full strength, they should be the equal of any U17 side in the North but inevitably there will be the usual competing calls of school rugby, A Levels, Saturday nights and girls for Rick Noden, Mark Shotton and their coaches to contest. Seriously though, at this age, the school team on a Saturday will always have priority over Sunday club rugby so there has to be a large squad to ensure that enough players are always available to honour Sunday league fixtures. And it‟s a tough league, they‟re in, League A, alongside, the likes of Stockport, Macclesfield, Preston GH, Caldy, Altrincham Kersal, Broughton Park, Wirral, Sandbach and Lymm. There‟s not an easy fixture amongst any of that lot. Rick Noden says:"They are a very talented squad and have always been a match for anyone in the North, or wherever they've toured. Many of them have been together since the beginnings of mini-rugby so the core of the team knows each other inside out, but we're extremely happy to have topped up with some great players along the way. This year we'll have to cope without our big No 8/outside centre Oskar Hirskyj-Douglas who's gone off to Wasps Accademy, but we have many other players of a similar quality. Callum Westaway and Tommy Wilkinson were selected by the county last season and whilst we'd have hoped to have a greater number of call-ups, the quality of the county team is second to none having thrashed Yorkshire at Wilmslow and soundly beaten all other opposition. This season will be a big test for us all: temn teams in division one mean we've got a congested fixture list with absolutely no let-up in the standard of opponent. And on top of that, we're squeezing in a trip to Toulon in mid-October to test ourselves against the French. Once we get underway we plan to add some specialist coaching sessions as and when school and club commitments allow, but the help and input given last year by Giles, Daz, Scanners, Sniffer, Brendan Thomas and many others is something we want to build upon this year. Fresh input from voices that the boys will respect is vital, as is our effort to integrate the squad into the senior set-up, where many hope they'll soon be competing for places.

Our ethos is, and always has been, to enjoy our rugby. It's pretty easy to do that when you've got a stong team, but when there's so much rugby to be had at school and at representative level, it's vital that we keep our training regimes and performance aspirations in context. There's only so much we can add, but what we are confident about is our ability to deliver entertaining attractive rugby for all the squad in a friendly inclusive club environment."

DAN WRIGHT The Wolves’ new captain is a 31 year old

Yorkshireman from Bradford and Bingley. He’s been a rugby player for most of his days, playing firstly in

the colts at Bradford Salem and the at the University

of Lancaster, where he became captain in his final year. Since then, he’s had two seasons at West

Hartlepool, then in National 2, four seasons at

Reading (N3Sth) and four seasons at Ilkley. He looks the archetypal second row player, jutting jaw and all,

but he’s also had spells in the back row. At both

Reading and Ilkley he became vice captain and would probably have inherited the captaincy if Deloitte’s

hadn’t moved him away.

And that’s partly, why he’s here at Wilmslow after being transferred to the corporate

finance department in their Manchester office. The other reason is that his wife, Helen, comes from Alderley Edge and as they now have two year old Isabella to look

after, it’s extremely convenient to have doting grandparents close to hand.

Dan then had to decide which rugby club he was going to join and after checking out

what was in the area, decided that Wilmslow would suit him best. It was also the

closest to the family home. I like the set up here, he said, the coaching’s good, it’s a friendly welcoming kind of a place with a good set of lads. Ideal really. Sadly

though, no sooner had he established himself here last season, than he was injured

in his third appearance for the Wolves and laid off for the remainder of the season. Having been part of promotion runs at two of his previous clubs, he knows the buzz

that this can bring to a club and he hopes that his previous experience can be replicated here.

Other interests include a bit of social golf and cycling. Last year he took part in a sponsored cycle race for the Deloitte’s team from John O’Groats to Lands End. It

took nine days!

Warming Up For The Season at Macclesfield,

For both clubs the new season starts, just as the old one finished. I wasn‟t present for the last game of last season against Park at Mauldeth but as both sides were comfortably installed in the middle of the league, there wasn‟t much for either side to get edgy about, other than the traditional rivalry between our two clubs. Park rounded off their season with a home win against a Wilmslow side which was fast running out of steam as the season‟s end approached. In recent seasons though,

honours have been more or less evenly spread between the two clubs but one always feels that Park have the potential to come up with a league winning side and if this season‟s model proves to be the one, O‟Brien, Titiloye, Clifford, Harrison et al, then they could be very hard to stop As we set out on the new campaign, it‟s interesting to reflect on the changes in personnel on both sides since last April. No more shall we see the massive figure of Rob Cowley, dominating the picture below. Retirement has beckoned and we wish him every success in his new role as team manager. Also moving on from this fixture last year are Josh and Ollie Longmore and Chris Lillie.

Organiser : Grant McKechnie The finest rugby brains that I could find( admitedly I didnt look past the end of the bar) will contribute to this highly entertaining results predictions competition throughout the forthcoming season. Teams of experts will analyse form and league positions pitting themselves against, each other and Wolfie, the true rugby brain of Wilmslow for the highly coveted prize at the end of the season. The team managers are, Si Muckle, Mostyn Williams, Martin, Dave Barker and one or two others who don‟t even know yet, just before going to press.

The

best bit, so far is that we will be sponsored by the Artisan Meat Company, suppliers of high quality meats to Wilmslow Rugby Club. When asked to comment a company source stated: “We are a local, traditional butchers and are rapidly becoming part of this community. All our meat is free range and from our own land or at least locally sourced meaning a fabulous quality product at a great value price, surprisingly cheaper than many of Cheshire‟s High Street butchers.” A fantastic BBQ pack will be presented to the winners at the end of the season.

Aspatria v Liverpool St. Helens Despite losing Greg Smith to Sedgely Park, LSH have new players to introduce and despite a hard time in a warm up at Lymm are confident of being thereabouts at the end of the season. Aspatria still have their squad from last season but with three Cumbrian sides in this league this year, it‟s not likely that any Cumbrian team will have snaffled all the talent. . Leigh v Wigton Leigh only stayed up last season because New Brighton were docked points but Wigton weren‟t so far ahead of them. I fancy that Leigh will be fitter and more organised than Wigton at this stage of the season. Northwich v Anselmians Northwich have started with three wins in their warm ups including an 18-6 success against Altrincham Kersal in the Cheshire Cup. Colin Johnson reports the loss of Crozier and Geaches to Caldy but three new arrivals. Anselmians were reputed to be paying last season which is why they won the SLC1 with ease but I suspect they‟ll find Northwich a different cup of tea altogether. Rochdale v Carlisle It‟s reported that Rochdale have absentees returning and are expected to be stronger than they were last season. Sandbach v Vale of Lune Sandbach will no doubt be feeling confident after their second half last week but their best rugby came when Wilmslow were down to 13 players. When Wilmslow got their numbers back again, they still had the last word though. Widnes v Wirral Wirral have recruited during the summer, according to Colin Johnson, and Widnes took the second SLC1 spot to come up via the play off. Wilmslow v Broughton Park A new look Wilmslow side with nine new selections in the squad. Park I guess will have all their injured absentees from last season back again and are always capable of being a handful.

Next weekend, the Wolves are away at Northwich. We’ve been there so often that directions are hardly necessary but here goes: - MOSS FARM, FIRDALE ROAD, NORTHWICH CW8 4BG Exit the M56 at the Altrincham turn off and take the A556 towards Chester. After several miles, bear right into Northwich on the A559. Follow the signs for 3 miles into Northwich town centre. At the third set of traffic lights in the centre, cross the River Weaver over the swing bridge and turn immediately left at the mini roundabout. Drive uphill through Castle village and at the second set of traffic lights turn right into Moss Road, then left onto Firdale Road. Moss Farm is on the right hand side of the road.
