Golf is a funny game. You could be playing the best golf of your life today and the very next day you struggle to get the ball past the ladies tee. Or one day you seem to be able to sink every putt within 20 feet while in the very next round, you three-putt almost every green.

But one thing must remain constant in every round of golf – etiquette, which is part and parcel of the Royal & Ancient Game. the underlying principle behind etiquette is consideration for your fellow golfers and for the golf course, so things such as replacing

divots and repairing ball marks are part and parcel of golfing etiquette.

My point is this – if you wish to be regarded as a true golfer, play the game as it was meant to be played and this includes repairing ball marks on the green. I still see some members who do not bother to do so and that not only makes me feel sad but also sorry for them. No matter how good these members are at the game, they will never be true golfers until they learn and implement proper golfing etiquette.

It’s been a while since we hosted a big professional event but, as most of you have probably heard by now, the RM1.2 million Worldwide Holdings selangor Masters comes to KpGCC this July 20 - 23. With the stars of the Asian tour in action as well as our own stalwarts such as Ben Leong and Danny Chia, it will definitely be a great event and we hope that members will come in full force to enjoy some great golf.

the course will be closed from July 18 - 24 to facilitate the staging of the tournament and I would like to thank members in advance for their understanding. High-profile tournaments such as the selangor Masters do a great deal to elevate the club’s image and giving up our playing rights for just over a week is a small price to pay.

speaking of playing rights, I would like to urge all members to utilise the online tee-time booking service. We live in a modern world where everything and everyone is connected by the click of a mouse, so let’s make use of it!

to the winners of the recent club championship, congratulations on a great show! Your excellence spurs average golfers like me to work harder and make our games better!

Happy Clubbing!

It seems like only a few weeks ago that we welcomed 2011 and we are now in the second half of the year. time, indeed, passes by quickly and stops for nothing and no one.

As most of you already know, the big news in the second half is that top-class professional golf returns to Kota permai with the staging of the Worldwide Holdings selangor Masters this July 20 - 23. the RM1.2 million tournament is a full-field Asian tour event and we can expect to see some fascinating golf from the region’s leading professionals as well as our own top players.

I hope that all members will bear with us for the closure of the course from July 18 - 24 to facilitate the staging of the tournament. You are all invited to turn up in full force to support our local professionals as they battle for honours – it’s going to be quite a tournament and you don’t want to miss the action!

Our very own club championship in June was an exciting event and I must commend the enthusiasm and commitment displayed by members during the senior, ladies and men’s events. I am sure all the participants had a challenging yet enjoyable time playing the course in full championship condition, with the greens rolling at 11.5 feet on the stimpmeter. My heartiest congratulations to the winners and special thanks to all the sponsors and staff for making this year’s championship a successful and memorable one.

since the implementation of the ‘No smoking’ policy on course. there has been a marked reduction in the number of cigarette butts on the course and to those members who smoke, thank you for adhering to the policy. Keep it up and remember – love our golf course and it will love us back!

Another golf course that members will love is the Chiangmai Highlands Golf & spa Resort, one of the premier golf clubs in thailand, which is our latest affiliation. Rest assured that the management will continue to tie up with more top courses in the Asia pacific region for members to enjoy.

the second half of 2011 will also see a number of sports events being held and I hope that members will render their full support and participate with gusto. these include the Junior sports Gala Night on July 2, followed by the Badminton Championship on July 16 - 17 and 23. then comes the tennis Championship on August 20 - 21 and 27 - 28; the subsequent month will see the squash Championship being held on september 17 - 18.

Finally, let me wish all our Muslim members an early Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri!

SENIOR & LADIES CLuB CHAMPIONSHIP

Beauty & experience on the fairwaysSenior golfers and ladies show grace and skill in annual championship

The power of experience and elegance of the fairer sex took centre stage on the weekend of June 18 - 19 during the annual senior and ladies club championship.

With the course in superb condition with green speed in excess of 11 feet on the stimpmeter, the Club’s top senior and lady golfers battled hard over two days of intense competition but in good spirit and great camaraderie.

the ladies gross category saw 2009 winner Khairunhanisah Azlan Hanif chalk up her third victory to earn the title of 2011 KpGCC Ladies Club Champion. the former selangor junior player shot rounds of 78 and 79 for a winning total of 157, four shots ahead of defending champion Doris Yee who had rounds of 81 and 80. Ong Gim Hong took third place on 171.

16-handicapper Fong poh Choo bagged the ladies nett title with a total of 145 (72, 73), two shots ahead of runner-up Lee Kee Hoon (17). Helen Chong (21) was third on 150.

Ng thin poh shot successive 77s to claim the senior gross title with a total of 154, edging runner-up Johnny Wong by two shots. Khoo Gee seng was third on 161.

the senior nett title went to 19-handicapper phang Ah Kheon with a nett total of 137 (70, 67), just one ahead of runner-up Lim Ah Lek (19). tharmalingam (14) was one stroke further adrift in third place.

In the super senior championship for golfers aged 60 and above, golf committee chairman Ng say Hoe claimed the gross title with rounds of 89 and 81 for a total of 170. He edged runner-up Wan Mat Wan sulaiman by four shots.

the super senior nett title went to Koe Chong Jin (18) with a nett total of 145 (71, 74), pipping runner-up Ng Ah Chong (17) by a solitary stroke.

Former professional Johnny Wong Shou Cherng showed that age is no barrier when he stormed to the men’s gross title in the KpGCC club championship held on June 24 - 26.

the winning 60-year-old golfer shot rounds of 78, 76 and 82 for a total of 236, leaving Kittipat songcharoen a distant second on 243 (85-76-82). the win atoned for Wong’s runner-up finish in the preceding week’s senior Club Championship, when he lost by two shots to Ng thin poh.

third place went to 2008 champion William Cheah on 247 (81-78-88), while Willie Lim finished fourth on 250, edging Charlie Lau on countback.

six-time men’s champion Jimmy Chia did not defend his title as he is currently in the United states.

the nett title went to 15-handicapper Lim pan Ching with a three-day nett total of

213 (77-69-67), five shots clear of runner-up sallehudin Othman (10). third place went to Yohanathan (15) on 220.

Lim scored a hole-in-one at the par three 14th hole on day two and his feat was emulated by golf committee chairman Ng say Hoe. Unfortunately, Lady Luck did not smile on anyone in the final round and no one managed to drive home the Mazda 2 1.5 sedan on offer for a hole-in-one at the sixth hole.

the prize-giving ceremony incorporated the ladies, senior and super senior categories played the previous week. It was a fun-filled affair that lasted until late evening, with many staying back to enjoy the fellowship fuelled by free flow of beer and entertainment. those who failed to play well enough to feature among the prize winners had a chance to pick up nifty prizes in the lucky draw, including a titoni watch worth RM3,763.

messageThe annual club championship is here again. the driving range is now packed with golfers, both members and non-members.

With all the awards and accolades that the Club has

received the Management has assured us that the facilities will be improved to match our Club’s ever-improving profile.

this year’s club championship will again become more competitive. All previous runners-up have a good chance to contend for the prestigious title in the absence of Jimmy Chia. In case you are not aware, JC will be away in the Us for some time, so the competition is now thrown wide open. Best of luck to the contenders and best wishes to JC and his family. Do keep in touch, JC,

your good friends are always around.Like all previous championships the club

championship is treated very seriously by all members. Consequently, play may be slow for various reasons, especially since we have made the course condition more competitive befitting a club championship. so please exercise patience and understanding so that everyone can play their best and enjoy their golf.

Currently, on-course cleanliness has improved significantly with fewer cigarette butts thrown around. this is a very good sign – please keep it up. However, unrepaired ball marks on the greens are still prevalent. please ensure your caddies or you as golfers help us to keep the course in good condition.

LIAISON COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN'SMESSAGE/BALLET DANCING

How time flies! Before we knew it, the third quarter of 2011 is already here.

the good news is that effective July 2011 KpGCC’s

golf membership rate will be increased from RM35,000 to RM50,000. Based on other Klang Valley premium golf clubs which have also revised their membership rates, I can say with confidence that eventually the value of KpGCC membership will continue to appreciate.

the other notable news is regarding online booking; members can now book their tee-times via the internet including peak periods on weekends.

this online system will assist our members who live far away from Kota permai as they will not have to be present at the Club at around 5.00am on thursday/Friday mornings to book their weekend flights.

I wish to relate an incident one saturday morning regarding serious delay due to rain. My flight tee-time was at 8.06am. We were at the tee-box at 7.55am when it started to rain and the stop play siren was activated. We only managed to commence play at 9.55am (a two-hour delay) and we completed the round at 2.35pm even though one member of our flight stopped after nine holes. I noticed that all the afternoon flights were put on a shotgun start and I was told that they only finished at around 7.30pm.

this is my second experience

playing with a two-hour delay. the earlier delay I experienced was at one of our singapore-affiliated club. What happened there was that we were not allowed to continue the cross over because the time had past 12.00 noon. the golf manager explained that if he had allowed us to continue our second nine, the afternoon flights would have been seriously affected.

Lastly, I wish to compliment the management for enforcing the ‘no smoking’ rule within the playing area of the golf course. As a result, we have seen significantly fewer cigarette butts being strewn around the golf course.

thank you and Happy Golfing!

SOCIAL CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE/SPORT ExCEL MILO COMPETITION

social cHairman's message

In this period of physical turmoil and economic uncertainties, quite a number of golf clubs are already

downsizing and are experiencing difficulties in maintaining their membership numbers.

However, going against the tide in the present environment, KpGCC has just seen it fit to substantially increase our entrance and transfer fees for membership. Apparently the availability of memberships in the secondary market is very limited or, if available, comparatively more expensive than before. these points clearly illustrate that KpGCC is getting more recognition as a

premier and prestigious club in the country and this is made possible by the variety of facilities, continuous good maintenance and quality services provided. With the projected increase in revenue, I hope the Management will continue to implement further improvements to the Club for the benefit of all members.

With reference to the sports activities, the Club recently held its Annual swimming Competition with about 60 members participating. A new event, 'Math Monkey', was also conducted specially for our junior members. I have been informed that this was very successful and that most parents want this event to be carried out more often. I am sure that with such pro-active and

positive feedback from the parents, the Club will definitely organise more such events for our junior members.

One facility that is always very well patronized is our gymnasium. We have received numerous comments and suggestions from members on the gym and action is currently being taken to make it better.

In July, the Asian tour’s Worldwide Holdings selangor Masters will be held at KpGCC. this prestigious golf event will most likely be telecast live and I am sure all members will be proud to see our Club on television.

With the month of Ramadhan approaching, let me wish all our Muslim friends and members Selamat Berpuasa and Selamat Hari Raya.

KPgcc swimmers excel in junior circuitKPGCC’s swim team participated with distinction in the first and second legs of the 2011 Milo sport Excel National Junior swimming Circuit.

In the first leg held on April 23 - 24 at the pusat Akuatik Darul Ehsan in shah Alam, 54 of our swimmers took to the pool with more than 1,500 other contestants from 30 clubs. 11-year-old Nur Iman sofiah Nur Aziz and 10-year-old Hazel Ho Jia En did the Club proud by collecting points in their events.

the second leg of the circuit took place on June 18 - 19 at the paroi swimming Complex in seremban, with 29 KpGCC swimmers competing. Hazel once again excelled in the meet and, along with nine-year-old Natasha Ngan shan Wei, collected more points to book their place in the grand final in Kuala Lumpur this July 9 - 10.

the club will be conducting extra training sessions for the swimmers who made it to the grand final, namely Hazel, Natasha, Nur Iman, Rosalind pang and Jeff pang. Go KPGCC Go!

9TH KPGCC SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP 2011

Water WondersFierce yet friendly competition sees numerous records and personal bests in 9th swimming championship

On April 30, the 9th swimming championship saw the Club's best young swimmers take to the pool to vie for honours in 58 categories.

While the competition was fierce in the pool with numerous records broken, the presence of family members and friends added a fun, carnival-like atmosphere to the event. Win or lose, many of the swimmers improved on their personal bests, spurred on by the loud cheers of their supporters.

Lim Jia Wen emerged as the star of the day, picking up gold medals in seven Boys 17 & Under events – the 50m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, 50m Breaststroke, 100m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke and 200m Individual

Medley. Among the other winners were Lee Zhe Yang, who picked up six titles in the Boys 12 & Under category, and Nur Iman sofiah with five golds in the Girls 12 & Under events.

the Club management would like to extend its gratitude to all the participants as well as their supporters for making the championship a great success.

KNOW THE RuLES

Rule 16-1c states that a player may repair an old hole plug or damage to the putting green caused by the impact of a ball, whether or not the player's ball lies on the putting green.

Any other damage to the putting green must not be repaired if it might assist the player in his subsequent play of the hole.

Why are players not permitted to repair spike marks that are in the vicinity of their line of play? Many argue that it is unfair for a player to suffer from damage to the putting green that has been caused by the carelessness of a player in a previous group.

the UsGA’s position on this subject is that “the Rules of Golf are based on two fundamental principles: (1) play the ball as it lies and (2) play the course as you find it.

permitting the repair of spike marks on a player’s line of play or putt would be contrary to these fundamental principles.”

proper etiquette recommends that damage to the putting green caused by golf shoe spikes be repaired on completion of the hole by all players, just as a player should fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made by him before leaving a bunker.

the UsGA feels that improved education and players' consideration for others, rather than a change in the Rules of Golf, is the proper solution to the problem.

the restriction on repairing irregularities is not just confined to the intended line of putt but applies to anywhere within the vicinity of the hole. this is because players do not

always strike their ball along their intended line, or they may putt way past the hole, requiring a return putt on a totally different line. Hence, spike marks may not be repaired anywhere in the vicinity of the hole, as it may affect their subsequent play of the hole.

What about the situation where a player repairs a spike mark after they have completed the hole in order to benefit a fellow competitor who still has to putt out? Well, Decision 13-2/36 makes it clear that not only does the person who repaired the spike mark incur a penalty of two strokes but, if the player who benefited from this action tacitly agreed to it, then they are penalised as well.

Happy golfing!

TEE TALK

The myth of talent and the power of

practice

Much has happened in the world

of golf and you would expect me

to touch on my countrymen’s

successes in the Masters and the

spanish Open. Or you might

expect me to comment on the

Malaysian Open which I was

fortunate enough to attend.

However, I wish to wax

philosophical.

When coaching I often tell

students that teaching golf requires

many skill sets. One has to have a

good mechanical understanding

of the game, a large degree of

patience, an understanding of how

people’s minds work (psychologist)

as well as understanding what is

really happening in the teaching

process – this requires a knowledge

of physiology (biomechanics) and

most specifically that required of a

brain surgeon. this is corroborated

by a book called 'The Myth of

Talent and the Power of Practice'.

Essentially it explains what I

have come to realise over the past

few years that whether we realise it

or not, what we are really doing

when learning is rewiring the

pathways between brain and

muscles. In other words the mind

has to learn and store in memory

how to get the brain to fire the

motor neurons in a coordinated

sequential manner in order to get

the muscles to work how we want

them to. We are in fact limited not

by our physicality but rather in our

capacity to restructure our reactive

neural system (controlled by mind

and brain).

I have always maintained that

anyone who is not physically

disabled can learn to play the

game if they have the desire and

the will. I think that if you speak to

any top pro, they will tell you that

they had to work very hard to

achieve their results. In this world of

canned instant results this should

be a wake-up call to anyone who

wishes to achieve success both in

sports and other fields.

Often I get

someone to work

a drill that is in

total

contradiction to

what would be

accepted as

technically correct. this is designed

to either break a bad habit or to

kick start a new one. the reactive

mind is not logical, I think most

psychologists would agree with this,

and to top it all feelings lie to us.

How many of us have seen our

swings on video and are stunned

to see that the visual evidence

does not tie in with what they feel

they are doing. Doing something

that feels wrong may be right and

more often than not doing

something that feels right may be

wrong. this is why so many people

give up learning prematurely.

IN tHE END It Is tHE pOWER OF

CORRECt pRACtICE tHAt WILL

LEAD YOU tO YOUR GOAL, NOt

tALENt.

When I was going through my apprenticeship, it was during the era of seve Ballesteros and the breakout of European players onto the American and then the global circuit. Not many people know this, but it was seve who broke the stranglehold of the Americans and allowed pros more self determination.

seve was an inspiration not only in the golf world but across many other disciplines as evidenced by the public tearful

emotions of Rafael Nadal at the Madrid Open, as well as the spanish football stars.

seve had a lot of pride and his extreme competitiveness did not allow him to end his playing days gracefully, however his premature demise has made many reflect on the impressive achievements of a young caddy who worked hard to achieve legendary status and in the process inspire many others to greater heights.
