  • Women in Croatia

Women make up half of the population and, in contemporary Croatian culture, they are general-ly the same as men.

The fi rst Women’s Day was marked in the not too distant past: in 1911. They were generally de-terred from doing so in many ways even by banal claims that they would be left without hair and a slim waist, leading to social emancipation. Even at the University of Vienna in the early 20th cen-tury, there were widely known claims that wom-en had a smaller brain than men. In response to the marginalization, women began to organize themselves, establishing various women’s socie-ties and trade unions, both within civil and labour movement.

Brave and successful women, often marginalized, though they were the best in their fi elds of activi-ty. Although neglected for life, they had just as an important impact on society as men. As we cele-brate the International Women’s Day during the month of March, we will remember some women who have left a deep mark in literature, fi ne arts, music and journalism and science. But in their time when it was not easy to be a woman and a scientist, they were condemned and challenged for their talent and courage. Women, Croats who have changed our world and enabled us to wel-come Woman’s Day as equal partners to our male partners

Marija Jurić Zagorka was extremely gifted. Her parents did not allow her to go to school and married her off against her will before she was 18. She escapes from marriage and became a journalist in Zagreb. She took a big step forward but, since she was only a woman, she wrote under a male pseudonym. Later she became an estab-lished political journalist, advocating for gender equality and women’s rights, of which she is still a symbol today. She founded the women’s mag-azines “Hrvatica” and “Ženski List”, the fi rst wom-en’s magazines. Throughout her working life, she has fought for women’s rights.

Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić was a well-known chil-dren’s writer who received numerous awards for her work. Twice she was nominated for the Nobel Prize and the fi rst female member of the Acade-my of Sciences, which until then had been the ex-clusive venue for men. As with many successful women, life has not always been easy. Her inti-mate biography reveals the problematic fate of a woman and mother. She married against her will at the age of 18. She was a mother of seven, and she still paved the way for all of us today through her work and achievements. We all should thank her for that. These two women are just two amongst many re-nowned Croat ladies; there isn’t enough space nor time to even address them all with the justice they

all deserve. Numerous women that were success-ful in their fi elds of activity, they have shown to all of us that there is nothing we women cannot do if we put our minds to it.

They were pioneers in the paving the way to a better world for all women, and it is their courage, perseverance, determination, and bravery in fac-ing adversity that have allowed us all to face the world, side by side with men.

I invite all women, mothers, girls, daughters, granddaughters, to join me in appreciation for all that these brave women that came before us ac-complished, which has lead us to the opportuni-ties of education and equal rights.

  • Here we are almost at the end of our mandate and it is time to pick a new team to lead the Inter-national Women’s Club Zagreb 2020/2021!

There are so many new and returning members this year ~ we are hopeful some of you will be interested in stepping up as the new leaders and bring new ideas and initiatives to our fabulous Club.

As you know, the IWCZ is run entirely by volunteers, each with diff erent backgrounds, passions, ideas and energy, this makes for a truly dynamic, interesting and productive work environment.

We encourage you to give it some serious thought. If you have any questions about positions, do not hesitate to ask any of the current Board members for assistance. We are at your disposal.

    IWCZ Executive Board 2019/2020

Every year the election of a new Executive Board takes place during the May General Meeting. If you would like to run for a Board position or know another club member who you think would be good for a particular position and wants to become a Board member, please email the Nominating Committee on [email protected].

Why should you consider joining the Board?

These positions give Board members the opportunity to give back to the IWCZ community. Many previous Board members took on positions, whether fi nancial, technical, or even related to hospi-tality, with no previous experience in the fi eld. Age is also not a barrier here, we do not expect perfection; however, the willingness to give it a try and do your best is a highlight encouraged.

The IWCZ Executive Board is a team, where each member supports one another, so there is always help available as needed.

What if you don’t have the time for such a commitment?

If you cannot volunteer for the Board, you can dedicate an hour or two of your weekly or monthly schedule to a committee or activity supporting the IWCZ. The vast majority of our outstanding contributions and initiatives come from our members directly.

  • I was born and raised in the twin Island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago. I sub-sequently migrated to the U.S.A. I worked in Manhattan for over 30 years and lived in Hillside, New Jersey before relocating to Boca Raton, Florida, where I resided for approximately 25 years. Upon retirement,my husband of 45 years and I decided to sell our home and do some travelling before moving back to New York City to be closer to our son. Our travels took us throughout England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and then to Europe where we spent time in Hungary, Czech Republic and Vienna to mention a few. In the meantime, our son moved to Berlin. During this time, he also visited and spent some time in Zagreb. Based on his visit, he encouraged us to visit Zagreb and this is where our story ends and our new life began. Now, it’s October of 2017 and we had been on the road literally for almost a year. We immediately fell in love with the city of Zagreb. It reminded us so much of growing up in our homeland of Trinidad, from the culture to the food and most of all, the kind, wonderful and hospitable people who we met along the way. While in Zagreb, I met a lovely girl from Australia and she invited me to attend the International Women’s Club Christmas Bazaar in December. It was the fi rst time I met Jenner and a few other ladies from the Club. I attended my fi rst meeting in January, 2018. After this meeting, and having met so many other charismatic ladies in the past year, and the club having provided me with many unique experiences and interactions with the other ladies, I decided that I would love to join the IWCZ. I hope to bring my wealth of knowledge, cultural and travel experiences to the table and to participate, motivate and promote awareness in relation to all that the IWCZ represents and stands for.

Dear members, After many years of moving from country to country, my family has set-tled down in Croatia. I remember the day my husband came home and announced we might move again and I also remembered my answer, a clear “No way”!This year is our fi fth in the row and I feel entirely happy to move to Zagreb, since I have found here my second home. It would be much more diffi cult without the IWCZ. As I was an experienced traveller and knew already the challenges of repatriation, I didn’t wait long and looked where I could fi nd acceptance, support and friendship. I am now a long term member and I want to give back to the club that gave me so much, so I decided to take the opportunity to help in the search of dedicated ladies, who could face all sorts challenges and fi nd themselves comfortable working in the team, where giving takes priority over taking.

  • I’m Croatian, born in Zagreb. After I have graduated from the Foreign Trade University in Zagreb I was invited to work in Vienna where I spent three years. It was great experience and challenge to my life but I returned to my Zagreb in 1979 and never regretted it. After my last 25 years working as a level 3 manager for 3M Multinational American/Swiss company, I retired in 2009.My best decision at that time was to join the IWCZ in 2010. I was an IWCZ Executive Board member for two years as Activity Coordinator, and I have participated in some projects too. The IWCZ brought to my life new quality relationships and good friends.

Club is a place where I can meet wonderful ladies from many diff erent cultures all over the world. We have fun together, we work on meaningful projects and I enjoy giving my contribution to Club’s activities.

I was born in Zagreb, lived abroad for many years, married a Brit/American and got fortunate to discover and join this lovely and vi-brant international women’s club in Spring 2016 as we moved back. The same year I was given the opportunity to serve as a Secretary IWCZ Board 2016-17, which proved to be very enriching and fulfi lling experience. Last year I’ve served on the second Nominating Commit-tee 2019 and this year I accepted the honor to be a member of the Nominating Committee 2020.

I come from the world of health, medicine and natural healing, as my passion has always been our mother nature and helping others. • Dear all,

Another busy month is behind us. Thank you again to all the members who supported this board by donating their time and resources, who were giv-ing items to the various charities, and support-ed fi nancially diff erent charity events. One of the beautiful things about our club is that the charity organizations that we have helped over the year are still keeping in touch with us. Be it to invite the club for a visit, to share information and news about their organizations, or even to donate things they don’t need anymore to some other charity that we are working with. Last month, RETO got chairs and bed frames from SVE za NJU, and the club got invited to visit the Institute for the Pallia-tive care!

On Friday, February 14th, our members had a magnifi cent culinary Valentine’s day celebration at the cooking academy of chef Branko Ognjeno-vić, who prepared a feast for us. We were greeted with rosé sparkling wine and an array of savory canapés. As we enjoyed our delicious bites and socialized, an emotional chef Branko told us why the charity “Renato - Chefs without borders” was such an incredible and important cause: it helps children, especially ones from low-income families, to get a free heart ultrasound and all the necessary health care for coronary diseases. We were then treated to a live cooking demonstration of a shrimp risotto with hints of mint and rose petals. For desserts, a fantastic variety of chocolate truffl es, sweet baskets, raspberry mousse, just to name a few! At this event, we raised 3400kn. As we departed, we were all given a memento of our visit. What a beautiful way we spent our Valentine’s Day.

“Mali zmaj”, our Christmas bazaar benefi ciary invited the IWCZ for the “grand opening” of their premises, that they managed to renovate and equipped thanks to our bazaar funds! The visit is planned for Thursday, March 19th. The signup sheet will be available at the March general meeting, or you can reserve your place by calling me or sending me an email on [email protected].

This was a very special and memorable visit to IWCZ Christmas Bazaar 2018 benefi ciary Institute for Palliative Care, part of The Special Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases, Rockfellerova Street 3 in Zagreb, Croatia.

On a stormy Tuesday morning we received warm, sweet and kind welcome in the library of the Special Hospital for Pulmonary Diseases, one of the fi rst hospitals in Croatia to receive interna-tional healthcare accreditation and the biggest hospital capacity (34 beds) for palliative patients in Croatia.

The interdisciplinary care giving approach of palliative care was refl ected in the team of profes-sionals being present at the reception. IWCZ was thanked by the President of the Institute for Palliative Care, prim.dr.sc. Marinko Artuković, MD who is also the manager of the Special Hospital for Pulmonary Disease. He was accompanied by prof.dr.sc. Asja Stipić Marković, MD pulmologist, head physiotherapist Mrs. Snježana Benko, dipl.physioth. clinical psychologist, nurses and the management stuff .

The place itself and the theme of palliative care brought up spontaneous, heartfelt sharing of personal end of life care experiences. As heavy rain chased by the gushes of strong winds were pounding on the windows, sheltered by the warmth of the attic, cup of tea and delicious baklavas

  • some of the heart breaking stories came to life... It felt therapeutic to touch the most diffi cult subjects in life. It always amazes me how special this club is in many ways.

After the reception we had the tour of the hospital’s palliative care department and were shown what equipment was purchase by the funds donated from the Christmas Bazaar 2018 in total of 338.833,22 KN. The head physiotherapist showed us the favorite item amongst the patients - “verticalizer” - the active lifter - sit to stand hoist. This state of the art lifter apparently has been the fi rst one in Croatia so far. It helps people to stand up and work they way up to higher levels of health and independence. Other items were: lymph drainage machine, stimulator for strength-ening breathing muscles, “smart” non-invasive aspirator, respirator, wireless neuromuscular eletrostimiulators and analgesic electrotherapy (second favorite among patients), several posi-tioning pillows, a walker and a wheelchair.

As the Institute for Palliative Care is becoming the teaching facility of the School of Medicine, Uni-versity of Zagreb this year, this equipment will be valuable learning opportunity for the medical students and the continuous education requirements in the fast growing fi eld of palliative care.

On the behalf of all the patients who have been benefi ting from the equipment and dedicated staff who’s work got easier and more eff ective, thanks to the equipment bought by our biggest annual charity, we are extending our thanks and gratitude to all IWCZ members, sponsors, sup-porters and the general public for making this happen!

I would like to thank the Charity Committee and the Charity Coordinator for reminding us to ap-preciate the blessings of good health and the importance of helping to increase the quality of life of those who are in need for palliative care and the end of life care as well as helping their families.
