 Allocation of Marks

Marks for each part are defined in question

Chief examiner for question defines intention of question and

suggests mark allocation.

Part a Say 10-20% for the reasoned decision and 40-45% for

each solution.

NO EXTRA MARKS awarded for “as option 1” so make it

different

Marks are awarded for showing knowledge.

DON’T ignore issues – you get marks for recognising a problem

even if you don’t know the right solution. A safe engineer

can recognise where his skills are limited.

 Allocation of Marks

DON’T cheat (simplify) the intention of the question

as it could get lead to non compliance of client’s

brief.

 Attempt all sections

Provide lots of sketches and diagrams – they

portray ideas quickly and clearly

Rough working sheets with idea bubbles. If you run

out of time writing it up you will get the same

marks for this if it clearly shows your knowledge.Method statement – not just a sequential list think

about access restrictions, temporary work, CDM,

possibly also environment & sustainability.

Causes of FailureFailure points

 – Unstable structure or inadequate section sizes

 – Non compliance with clients requirements

 – Cannot be constructed

 – Others may be identified in the examiner’s meeting

Grossly overdesigned structure

Failure to complete the question

 – Practice & preparation

Ignoring part of the question – It is better to show you understand the problem rather than ignore it if

you don’t know the solution

Option 2 is too similar to option 1

Draw up schemes roughly with annotations

You must show your reasoning to benefit from the marks

If you don’t understand explain what assumptions you have taken

 Additional marks for

 – Discussion of how the solution is / is not sustainable

 – Environment impact

 – H&S / CDM knowledge

Often missing

 – Detail on method statement - access restrictions/ material storage/

temporary work/ protection of public & environment
