You are unlikely to slip on a clean dry floor.Water, oil, dust etc. can all make a floor moreslippery, but where might this contaminationcome from?...
Why do people slip?
SLIPS & TRIPSCommon sources of contamination
Spills…
From containers, bags, production lines etc.
SLIPS & TRIPSCommon sources of contamination
Leaks…
From machines, pipes, roofs etc.
SLIPS & TRIPSCommon sources of contamination
Wet mopping…
Freshly mopped, shiny floors.
SLIPS & TRIPSCommon sources of contamination
Rubbish…

George did not report the accident and told noone.

Why do people trip?
Trips happen when you catch yourfoot on something you didn't realisewas there, for example…
SLIPS & TRIPS
Broken or unevenflooring & loose carpet
Leads & cables acrosswalk ways
Obstacles left inwalkways
SLIPS & TRIPS
Think about all the areas you work in. What hazards areyou likely to come across and what can you do aboutthem?
SLIPS & TRIPS
Can you find the four slip & trip hazards in this picture?
SLIPS & TRIPS
1Carrying the box means that you are less likely to spot palettes left
in walkway.
SLIPS & TRIPS
2 Trailing cable may trip
people up.
SLIPS & TRIPS
3 Water from leaking pipe could cause
people to slip.
SLIPS & TRIPS
4A drink has been
spilled on the floor, which
someone could slip on.
SLIPS & TRIPS
It should look like this…
Leak cleaned, reported and
repaired.
Trailing cables eliminated
Hazards removed
from walkways
Spills cleaned up & drinks carried in a safer way.
Load carried in a safer
way.
SLIPS & TRIPS
What shoes do you wear to work?
Wearing sensible shoes with good grip will reduce slips in many workplaces.
If you have been given safety footwear for work:
Make sure they fit.Wear them.Keep them clean. Ask for a new pair if they are worn out.
SLIPS & TRIPS
Case study: You can borrow my shoes
Susan worked in an office and had to visit thewarehouse but didn’t have her safety shoes.
Liam offered to lend Susan his shoes. They weremuch too big, but Liam told her it would be fine.“You only need them for five minutes”.
As a result, Susan tripped whilst going down thestairs.
Susan broke her back and is now partiallyparalysed.
Make sure they fit. Wear them. Keep them clean. Ask for a new pair if they are worn out.

If you feel a floor is becoming damaged, dangerous or more slippery, report it.
