MISSION STATEMENT

The Coalition is a concerned assemblage of African American social and civic organizations whohave come together for the purpose of addressing issues and concerns that impact on the wellbeing of the African American community. The Coalition is composed of groups that have beenin existence for decades, representing a large portion of African American individuals who areat the highest level of educational, economic and professional accomplishments.

The goal of The Coalition is to be cognizant of and respond to issues pertinent to the AfricanAmerican community of a specific or general nature in the interest of having a positive impact ona particular situation.

Hon. Jesse Jackson Jr.U.S. Congressman - 2nd District

Representative Jesse L. Jackson, Jr. began service inthe US House of Representatives on 12/12/95, the91st African American elected to Congress.

Representative Jackson sits on the House Appropri-ations Committee, serving on the Subcommittee on Labor, Healthand Human Services, and Education and the Subcommittee on State,Foreign Operations and Export Financing.

As a member of the Labor, Health and Education Subcommittee, hehas fought to eliminate health disparities. His leadership created theNational Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities at theNational Institutes of Health in 2001, hailed by many minority healthexperts as the most important civil rights legislation since the 1964Civil Rights Act. Under Representative Jackson's leadership, theCenter was elevated in 2010 to the National Institute on MinorityHealth and Health and Health Disparities. Representative Jacksonalso secured funding for the definitive 2002 federal report on healthdisparities, “Unequal Treatment."

As a member of the State, Foreign Operations Subcommittee, Rep-resentative Jackson has led the efforts for development and humani-tarian assistance in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2005, Jackson led the effortto provide $500 million in food, medicine and shelter for peoplesuffering in the Darfur region of Sudan. From 2006 to 2010, Jacksonsecured funds to provide security and infrastructure upgrades toLiberia as it has emerged from its civil war and the despotic rule ofCharles Taylor.

Born on March 11, 1965 in the midst of the voting rights struggle, theson of the famed civil rights leader spent his 21st birthday in a jail cellin Washington, D.C. for taking part in a protest against apartheid atthe South African Embassy. Years later, he was on stage with NelsonMandela during his historic speech following a 27-year imprisonmentin Cape Town.

In 1987, Jackson graduated magna cum laude from North Carolina A& T State University with a Bachelor's in Business Management. Heearned a Master's in Theology from Chicago Theological Seminary,and in 1993, received his Juris Doctorate from the University ofIllinois College of Law. He has received numerous honorary doctorate
