FRIDAY ONLYFRIDAY ONLY

“A TYPE of insurance policy that pays outa lump sum at a specified future date.” Thatis what an endowment policy is.

Life assurers offer discretionary investments in the form of endowment policies. These force you to save, because you areboundtoacontractforafixedperiod.Generally, there are heavy penalties if you breakthe contract. The penalty is up to 15 percentfor those policies entered into after January1, 2009, although the penalties typically decrease the longer you save, especially afterthe first year. Depending on the policy, youmay be allowed a nopayment window period, have access to part of your investment(but only once in the first five years), or borrow against your investment if you need themoney urgently.

You generally have a choice of investingeither in marketlinked portfolios, which aresubject to the vagaries of the markets andoffer no guarantees, or lowerrisk, partially

or fully guaranteed portfolios and smoothbonus portfolios.

With a guarantee, your capital at leastis guaranteed on maturity, and with asmoothedbonus investment your annualreturns are smoothed (lowered in goodyears so that they can be raised in badyears), counteracting market volatility.

Endowment policies have tax implications of which you need to be aware. Youdo not pay tax on your earnings; life assurance companies pay income tax on your behalf on interest and foreign dividends at 30percent and capital gains annually at an effective rate of 7.5 percent. This is only an advantage if your marginal tax bracket is higher than 30 percent and you expect to exceedyour annual tax exemption threshold for investment income. The CGT may also be toyour disadvantage because you could loseout on CGT exemptions, and you may paymore than necessary because it is calculated annually.

Endowment policies can also incorporate a risk aspect such as a “premium waiver” option, where, if you suffer a disabilityand lose your means of income, your premiums are covered for the contract period.

Note that these features usually cost extra, and it is worthwhile to weigh up theirbenefits against the drain on your returns.

Cost structures are often complex. Costscanincludeanadviser’scommission, annualplatform administration fees (in some cases a fee per premium), and annual assetmanagement and performance fees. Withsome products, you can invest directly, cutting out the adviser costs.

Tips for investors: For young investorswith highrisk appetite. The rule of investingis that when you are young, the preferenceshould be for high riskhigh returns optionsbecause the investor has the ability to takerisks at this stage of life. So, those below 30should not get perturbed by the recentmood in the equity markets. As history hasshown, the equity markets are subject tovolatility but have the ability to generatedoubledigit returns in the long term. Theadvantage with them is no tax on gains.

In the case of highrisk investors, anydowntrend is an opportunity for investments and it's no different this time. Whilethe shortterm trend continues to be risky, you can use the current downtrend to accumulate longterm investments. Investments in largecap stocks or largecap focused funds are less risky when comparedwith small and midsized companiesthough the latter have the ability to turnmultibaggers when the sentiment turns forthe better.

ENDOWMENTPOLICIES

IF you ask any scientist why they do whatthey do, you will obviously get varyinganswers.

Anundergraduatemighttellyousomething very different to a postdoctoratestudent – who at this stage would haveasked him or herself the same questionwith increasing frequency over the years.

I could run out of oped space explaining the reasons why science is importantin our lives, but for the purpose of thiscolumn I will only tell you that it is to vanquish ignorance and exercise a healthydose of scepticism.

Too many of us are victims of pseudoscience, myths, misconceptions and incorrect use of science thanks to marketingploys.

Ignorance can be easily overcome, butif you throw a dose of ego into the mix,you have a misguided sense of selfpreser

vation when it comes to “touchy” issuessuch as creationism, vaccination, evolution, alternative medicine and nutritional information.

Thankfully, we can save ourselves bigheadaches if we apply the simplest tenetof science, which boils down to “assumenothing, question everything”.

Science journalism exists not only as afactchecking tool, but as a standard bywhich we practice healthy skepticism notcynicism to better ourselves and others

intellectually. It is unfortunate therefore that science

stories do not hold a lot of weight in termsof editorial space in many national and indeed local papers in South Africa. Sciencestories have to compete with sports andpolitics, with the latter being in great supply.

As a science advocate it is my duty totry to convince you to like (or at least careabout) science, but it is not a simple task, and after all, a sports’ journalist doesn’tneed to convince sports’ fans why theyshould like sports.

Writing science articles is not easy, andgiven the demands made on small newsteams, journalistsusuallyfindthemselveswith ridiculous schedules and little or nosocial life.

This makes it even more difficult tofind personal time to write about science, which many editors are loathe to acceptas thewriteupmaynothaveasmuchpulling power as an accident or political scandal.

But it’s not onlyaboutthepullingpower when it comes to nonscientific articles

Science is in needof your love andsupport

— science can be intimidating tothe uninitiated.

I would love to tell you thatscience is all about the discovery ofsome wonder material or newlydiscovered giant killer chicken or theadvent of a space rock on a collisioncourse with KZN, but this is very rarelythe case. Of course, stories like thisdo exist, and you can and should readabout them on the net.

Some of my favourite reputablesites include “I F*cking Love Science”and Phil Plait’s “Bad Astronomy”.Someofthebestsciencewritingintheworld can also be found at National

Geographic’s “Phenomena”.In a country and a province where sci

ence education is still far below the global benchmark, it is time for us to consciously abandon our fear of science. We need to fall in love with the wonderof science, but also be careful to avoid“bumpersticker” science, as one ofSouth Africa’s foremost science journalists (and author of Searching AfricanSkies) Sarah Wild once put it. I encourage you to take the plunge into the deep, beautiful and mysterious world of science. You won’t regret it.Sibusiso can be contacted at

becoming more and more difficult tohandle. Every day there are reports ofsuffering through crime, economic circumstances, failures, sickness and death. Not everyone is equipped to face thesechallenges. How can one restore andmaintain at least some degree of happiness in their lives?

It is the right of every individual to behappy. What price does one have to payfor the happiness one seeks? How doesone go about seeking that happiness? What are the prerequisites for that hap

piness? These and many more questions per

taining to happiness will be answered ata seminar organised by Vishwaroop Temple and Dharamashala. It will take placefrom Sunday 1 June to Tuesday 3 June,at 6.30pm to 8pm at the Gokhale Hall,10 Plein Street, Tongaat.

Your participation in this seminarcould bring you the bountiful happinessyou seek. For further information contactPundit Kasoo Panday on 032 944 1898or 082 408 4058.

THE Airports CompanySouth Africa (Acsa) is to pro-vide consultancy and adviso-ry services to the Ghana Air-ports Company Limited (GA-CL) as the country expandsand upgrades its airports.

Acsa chief executive Bon-ganiMasekosaidalthoughhedid not know what the valueof this agreement would be,the two state-owned airportmanagement companies hadsignedafive-yearagreement.

Acsa is set to advise andhelpGhanawith the retail de-velopment of its airports, maintenance, engineering, ground handling operationsand security, among otherthings.

Ghana’s Accra Interna-tional Airport has the capaci-ty to accommodate 250 000passengers a year, but is han-dling 2.5 million as the coun-try’s domestic air traffic hasgrown by over 30 percent ayear and international pas-sengers by about 10 percent.

GACL is tasked with mod-ernising Kotoka Internation-al Airport in Accra, as well asthree regional airports andother airfields. Kotoka Inter-national Airport’s upgradewill include the building of anew terminal.

“Ghana is experiencing

therapidgrowththatwewereexperiencing 15 years ago. We’ve been through the chal-lenges they are facing. Butthis partnership will not be aone-way street. We’ll look atthe learnings [sic] we get andseewhatcanbe implementedinSouthAfrica,”Masekosaid.

He said, for instance, inBrazil whereAcsa has an air-port concession, it was no-ticed that Guarulhos Interna-tional Airport’s informationtechnologyapproachwasdif-ferent, and it was looking athow it could adopt this inSouth African systems.

InMumbai, the lesson thatAcsa took home was the air-port’s different retail ap-proach.

Acsa has equity stakes inMumbai International Air-port in India, and at Guarul-hos International Airport inSão Paulo, Brazil.

In its annual report lastyear, Acsa said the Mumbaipartnership, which has beenin place for six years, hadprovedtobeaworthwhileun-dertaking.

Maseko said Acsa wouldnot close the door on any op-portunity that came its way.

“TheGhanaopportunity isself-funding,butwehave tak-en an approach that even ifthe opportunity is not self-funded, we are not going to

close thedoor to anybody.Wewill club together with finan-cial institutions where thereis no self-funding. Butwewillnot expose Acsa’s balancesheet to any risk,” he said.

Maseko said unless it re-ceived another high-yieldingcommercial airport conces-sion opportunity, Acsa wouldnot borrow money for proj-ects itbecameinvolvedinout-side of South Africa.

MasekosaidAcsawaseye-ing more strategic partner-ships in other African statesand airport concessions inother parts of the world.

“We’ve said that we willnot be geographically limitedas to where we go,” he said.

HesaidAcsa’sinternation-al strategy, embroiled in thecompany’s 10-year businessplan that was launched lastyear, wasaimedat increasingits international revenue.

In the 2013 financial year, airport concessions made up10 percent of Acsa’s non-aeronautical revenue.

Theserevenuestreams in-clude items like retail, carparkingandpropertyrentals, and together generated R25million, or 36 percent, of thecompany’s revenue last year.

Acsa said concessionscontinued to be a stable andgrowingsourceofitsrevenue.
