on behalf of the residents of Half Moon Bay, I welcome you and encourage you to visit and experience our won-derful city, magnificent Coastside and to explore the unique

offerings of this slice of the world-renown California Coastline.

Make the most of nature’s offerings. Take a stroll, bike, ride or vigorous run along our beautiful bluff tops from the sea, all the way up to the mountains and into the redwoods! A healthy activity, free to explore and experience here on the Coastside! And if your idea of nature is a fresh cut fairway, Half Moon Bay offers two world-class golf courses just waiting for you.

enjoy the bounty of agriculture and open space. Agriculture continues to make up a large part of our Coastside. We are so fortu-nate to still have our family farms here producing healthy, nourishing vegetable crops for all. Eat locally grown vegetables at our many fine restaurants in town, or join the community and participate in our Certified Farmers’ Market every Saturday, May-December 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.; meet local farmers who make up both the past and present of Coastside farming.

Meet the friendly people who live and work on the coastside. Enjoy our unique Main Street with its wonderful and varied restau-

rants and cafes, community markets and fine bakeries, along with the many one-of-a kind shops full of mementos just waiting for you to bring home. We have book stores, wine shops, and a family run hardware store that stocks just about anything you might need.

And stay here a while. For those who can’t bear to only enjoy all that our city has to offer in a single day – stay! The Half Moon Bay Coastside has accommodations to fit all needs and budgets, includ-ing Lodges and Motels, RV Parks with Ocean views, unique Bed and Breakfasts and the renowned Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Come visit Half Moon Bay! Please come and enjoy our home-town hospitality. Bring your four legged pals so they can enjoy what Half Moon Bay has to offer, too. Stop by to say “Hi” as you fall in love with our special corner of the world; each season offers something new from wildflowers on the hillsides in the spring to pumpkins in the fall. Every day Half Moon Bay closes with the magnificent sun setting off the majestic Pacific Ocean. After a visit here you will see why we were voted Number One Coastal City.

Enjoy!Farmer John Muller, Mayor

32 Coastside Guide SPRING/SUMMER 2014

Summertime on the Coastside can mean bright blue sun or enveloping fog, but the beaches are gorgeous in any kind of weather. They range from the bustling scene of Surfer's Beach to deserted stretches of sand at Tunitas Creek, and everything in between. Montara Beach ranks high among readers and you'll find Cowell Ranch a stellar escape. If you are headed down the coast, you'll find the gorgeous and intimate Bean Hollow and the vast open sands of San Gre-gorio. See the map in the front of the Coastside Guide for locations. Beaches are listed from north to south. Check off the ones you've visited!

Gray Whale CoveAn unofficial clothing-optional spot (at the north end), there is parking across the street. Don’t leave valuables in the car — thefts are reported often. Just south of of the tunnel. Por-table restroom on steep trail to beach. About 100 stairs lead down to this breaktaking spot.

Fitzgerald Marine ReserveWhen the ocean rolls back the tides, another world is revealed in pools that attract the curious from all over the Bay Area. Look but don’t touch! Restrooms and visitor center in small parking lot. Walking trail on bluffs above beach.

Montara state BeachA Coastside favorite because of the wide open beach and beautiful views of Montara Mountain. Great for walks and beachcomb-ing. Leashed dogs allowed on beach. Rest-rooms in south parking area. Popular surf spot, but not recommended for beginners.

seal CoveSecluded beach underneath the Moss Beach Distillery. Can be a great swimming beach, especially at low tide. Reef blocks large waves creating a relatively calm la-goon. Can be lots of seaweed. Beautiful trail on blufftop though cypress forest.

Ross’s CoveThis is the hidden half-moon just north of the famous Mavericks break. It can be tricky getting to the beach, but worth the effort. Park at Mavericks parking lot and head up and over the hill to well worn trail. Expe-rienced surfers only. Beautiful trail to Seal Cove on blufftop.

Montara Lighthouse BeachA small beach accessed through the Mon-tara hostel/lighthouse station. Historic fog signal dates back to 1875. Secluded and scenic, but not accessible if gate is closed at lighthouse. No facilities.

surfer’s BeachThis is the most popular surf spot on the San Mateo County coast and usually the most crowded beach when the weather is good. At high tide, beach can disappear complete-ly. Erosion has removed much of the golden sand that can be found at other spots.

Dunes BeachPretty, quiet beach with paid parking avail-able. You may see surfers or just those who love a long walk on the beach. Access at Young Avenue, straight through the kiosk. Flush toilets. Trail down to beach. Good spot to park and explore Coastal Trail.

Poplar BeachWide and often uncrowded beach south of downtown Half Moon Bay. Metered parking. Steep, dirt trail leads down to wide open beach. Great spot to access Coastal Trail. Popular beach for equestrians to ride along.

Miramar BeachAccessed by a short staircase near the Mira-mar Beach Restaurant. Limited parking but can be a nice spot when Surfer’s Beach gets crowded. Restroom located near Coastal Trail.

venice BeachThe end of Venice Boulevard opens into a beach operated by the state. Multiple, large parking areas. Flush toilets. Stairs to beach at northern lot, but you may need to ford creek to get to the sand. Remember: gates close at sunset.

Francis state BeachPerhaps the busiest of Coastside beaches, there is ample paid parking and access to the Coastal Trail. At the end of Kelly Avenue. Popular for surfing and picnics. Large camp-ing area for RVs, cars, and cyclists. Ranger station and visitor center.

Roosevelt BeachThe northern end of four miles collectively known as “Half Moon Bay State Beach.” Ac-cess at Young Avenue. Turn right at kiosk and travel slowly down access road. Large parking lot and pit toilets. Uncrowded most of the year.

AlcatrazSouth of the bridge at Miramar. Access is best from Mirada Road, down the Coastal Trail. Old stairs are washed out. Shifting sand bars can sometimes create good surf. Care-ful though: at low tide, pillars from old pier can be exposed.

MavericksKnown more for giant waves than the beach, nevertheless, beach can be beautiful retreat at low tide. Trail from harbor leads past calm beaches popular with dog walkers and kayakers. Don't expect to see famous waves in any season than late fall or winter.

Dental Health for the Entire Family Taking care of your mouth and teeth is important from early child-hood and throughout your life. Dental neglect can result in problems like cavities and even eventual loss of teeth.

There are some basic things that the whole family can do to keep your mouth and teeth healthy:•Brush daily with fluoride tooth paste (at least twice a day for 2 minutes each)• Floss your teeth every day (preferably in the evening)•Have smart healthy snacks – limit sugary snacks •If you have a sweet snack brush if possible or rinse vigorously with water.•Eat foods rich in calcium •Don't smoke or use tobacco products•See your dentist regularly

Healthy teeth are important to your child's overall health. From the time your child is born, there are things you can do to promote healthy teeth. For babies, you should clean teeth with a soft, clean cloth or baby's toothbrush. Avoid putting the baby to bed with a bottle and check teeth regularly for spots or stains.

All children should:•Brush teeth with a fluoride tooth paste •Provide healthy foods and limit sweet snacks and drinks •Have low-fat milk and dairy products that are rich in calciium. •Schedule regular dental check-ups

Starting good habits in children will help them have healthy teeth for their entire lifetime.

Improving Your SMILE With the help of your dentist, almost anyone can have a bright perfect smile. Of course orthodontic treatment can straighten teeth but additionally many new advances in dental materials and techniques allow your dentist to help you achieve near perfect teeth that can be almost as strong as original tooth structure.

Some of the things your dentist can do to achieve the SMILE you would like: •Whitening can make your teeth whiter and brighter•Using strong tooth colored resin materials to fill cavities •Re contouring some teeth that don’t match others•Closing spaces between teeth •Using tooth colored resin materials to repair chips or rough spots

The procedures used to accomplish these changes are often called:Cosmetic Dentistry Bleaching/Whitening CrownsCosmetic VeneersComposite Resin Restorations —Cabrillo Family Dental

Cowell RanchLocated south of Half Moon Bay, Cowell begins with a half-mile trail to the point and then 150 stairs to a well-protected sandy beach. Restroom at lot and at beach. Permanent view scope on bluff. Nothern access point for 3 mile Cowell-Purisima Coastal Trail.

Pomponio state BeachPlenty of parking and picnic tables make this South Coast beach a perfect place for a barbecue with family. This day-use facility features a small lagoon and roaring surf.

Gazos Creek BeachAbundant tidepools dot a beach that is now part of the Año Nuevo State Reserve. The re-serve also includes Cascade Ranch. Parking is across from the Highway 1 Brewery.

tunitas Creek BeachWide, wild beach with dramatic cliff views to the north. Few visitors — perhaps because of the difficult, very steep trail down from Highway 1. If you are feeling adventurous, explore the caves on the southern part of the beach.

Pescadero state BeachRocky coves and tidepools. Popular with fishermen. Across the highway is Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve, a popular spot for bird watchers and other naturalists. Several parking areas.

Bean Hollow state BeachBeautiful horseshoe shaped cove with plenty of tidepools to the north. Look for the self-guided nature trail — and keep your eyes open for sea urchins, crab and other marine life. Small, powerful waves can break right onshore.

san Gregorio state BeachThere is enough driftwood to build a vaca-tion home on this mile-long sandy beach at the mouth of the San Gregorio Creek. Rest-rooms and picnic area. At the intersection of Highway 84 and 1.

Redondo BeachSweeping views from the bluffs but a difficult scramble down eroded cliffs to the beach. Seldom visited but good way to access the Ritz-Carlton segment of Coastal Trail to the south.

ocean Colony BeachYou don’t need to stay at the Ritz-Carlton to utilize this beach. Park just before entering resort property on Miramontes Point Road. Beach is tucked under the golf course. Stairs down to beach.

ZABALLA HOUSE, 324 Main St.: A “Greek Revival” style building, Zaballa’s House stood as the wealthiest of the wealthy. Built around 1855 with wood from the local redwoods, the two-story house did not incur heavy damage in the 1906 earthquake. Today’s visitors can stay at the Zaballa House Bed and Breakfast. The History Association has a diorama of old Half Moon Bay — or Spanishtown as it was called 150 years ago — on display at the Zaballa House to give a real sense of the area’s original footprint.

MAIN STREET BRIDGEBefore 1900 there was nothing but a simple wooden bridge here but local businessman and popular County Supervisor Joseph Debenedetti used his infl uence to modernize it. According to the Half Moon Bay History Association, the steel used was from the discarded cables of San Francisco cable car lines. It is the fi rst concrete bridge in the county.

TIN PALACE 315 Main St.: Built in 1923, the skeleton of this building has taken many shapes and forms. The site for the old Tin Palace is currently occupied by the popular eatery, Pasta Moon. Known for its emphasis on fresh local produce, what many of its patrons do not know is that this building has served Half Moon Bay residents and tourists in many capacitties - Buggy repair, shipbuilding, machine shop and clothing.

OLD JAIL 505 Johnston St.: Two cells and a small offi ce remind us of simpler days on the Coastside during the fi rst half of this century. The jail was built in 1911, and served law enforcement until 1969. It often open to the public.

THE INDEX SALOON/CUNHA COUNTRY GROCERY, 448 Main St.:

Initially developed as a saloon in 1900, this Half Moon Bay landmark was converted into a Country Store by William Cunha in the 1930s. It burned down in 2003 as was

rebuilt with a lot of community support.

JOHNSTON HOUSE, 110 Higgins Canyon Road: This stately home was among the fi rst houses built by the Americans coming to the Coastside from the east. This beautifully restored house was fi rst built in 1855 by James Johnston, one of four brothers who came to settle, do business, and help make Half Moon Bay a thriving early California town. He was involved in many Northern California enterprises, but died in poverty. He and his brothers left many lasting marks on the Coastside, one of which is “The White House,” which is a museum, often open to the public. Blown over in 1976 while on a temporary foundation, the house was meticulously rebuilt.

HOTEL MOSCONI/SAN BENITO HOUSE, 356 Main St.: Known as San Benito House today, Hotel Mosconi is one of the few buildings that serves the same purpose as it did back when it was built. Unfortunately for Italian Immigrant Emanuel Daneri, who built the hotel, the structure suffered much damage from the 1906 earthquake only one year after it opened its doors.

MILLER-DUTRA FUNERAL HOME, 645 Kelly Ave.: The building was originally built in 1905 and later refaced by Ben Cunha with his interpretation of the art Nouveau style. It has had the same use for more than a century.

COMMUNITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 777 Johnston St.: The oldest church building in the community, the Half Moon Bay Methodist church has been expanded since it was fi rst built in 1872 and the names seen in the sidewalk are those of early supporters.

FRANCIS BUILDING, 413 Main St.: Entrepreneur and County Supervisor Manuel Francis built this Mission Revival style building in 1922 with retail shops downstairs and his family’s home upstairs.

PABLO VASQUEZ HOUSE, 270 Main St.: Built in 1869 by then “town personality” and constable, Pablo Vasquez, this home departed form the Hispanic tradition.

HALF MOON BAY BAKERY, 514 Main St.: According to the Half Moon Bay History Association, this local bakery stands nearly exactly where the town’s fi rst bakery was located around 1860. The new bakery was built in 1929. It still uses its original double ovens that are made of brick.

tHe HeARt oF tHe CoAstAL tRAIL Besides one short dirt section near surf-ers beach and a shared road in Miramar, the trail from the harbor to Seymour Bridge just past Poplar Avenue is an unbroken, paved flat path that can acco-modate runners, walkers, bikers, skaters and wheelchairs. The trail can be accessed in several locations.Distance from Poplar Beach to the harbor is about 4.5 miles.

A vital link along the blufftops One of the most popular and celebrated features of the Coastside is a coastal path that connects many of our local communities, parks and beaches. The surface varies from dirt, to gravel to asphalt. From the easily accessible Mirada West to the beauti-ful and remote Cowell-Purisima trail, visitors and locals utilize the path for exercise, relaxation and commuting.

the Coastal trail One of the Coastside’s premier projects, this beautiful trail officially starts at Coronado Street in El Granada on the undeveloped land called Mirada Surf West, just south of the jetty at Pillar Point Harbor. It winds through Miramar and Half Moon Bay, ending officially just south of Poplar Avenue. Informal pieces of the trail run through Moss Beach, Princeton and the harbor as well. Very popular with locals, the Coast-al Trail is open to those traveling by foot, bicycle or (at least in parts) by horse. Expect traffic, as this trail is usually busy. A new addition running between Cowell Ranch and Verde Road is now open to hikers and bikers. see MAP PReviOUs PAge

Mcnee Ranch state Park

Jaunting through the 700-acre McNee Ranch State Park, it’s plain to see why the park is one of the Coast-side’s top hiking destinations. Situated near Montara Mountain, the land provides breathtaking ocean and hillside views for reasonable effort. Take the San Pedro Mountain Road north across the park for a 6.4-mile round trip hike. This route was the one used before it was replaced by Devil’s Slide. For a steep climb, start from Highway 1 and take the North Peak Access Road. The round trip is 7.6 miles. If you’re in the mood for a shorter trek, try the path to Gray Whale Cove, two miles round trip. To get to McNee Ranch State Park, take Highway 1 north from Half Moon Bay. Just north of Montara State Beach you’ll find an entrance and plenty of parking. Open to hikers, equestrians and cyclists.

san Pedro valley County Park

Like McNee Ranch, this 1,150-acre park in Pacifica offers incredible ocean vistas at the top of the moun-tain. A network of short trails, including the easy, 400-foot Plaskon Nature Trail and the 0.6-mile Brooks Falls Overlook Trail, make the park an ideal outing for families. If you’d like to hike a little farther, try the 2.1-mile each way Montara Mountain Trail, or the Hazelnut Trail, 3.7 miles one way. Most of the park is wheelchair accessible, and there is one bicycle trail (Weiler Ranch Road), plus several equestrian trails. To get there, take Highway 1 from the south end of Pacifica and turn east on Linda Mar Boulevard to the park entrance.

Burleigh Murray Ranch state Park

This lovely short trail is actually an old farm road. It follows Mills Creek and will lead you by a historic ranch and barn. Two miles round trip to the barn, four miles round trip to the water tanks. Trails for equestrians, hikers and cyclists: From the intersections of highways 1 and 92, go south on Highway 1 for 1.2 miles to Higgins Purisima Road. Turn east and go 1.7 miles to the park entrance, where you’ll find parking.

edgewood County Park and natural Preserve

Edgewood is a San Mateo County park adjacent to Pulgas Ridge and contains 467 acres of land. There are more than seven miles of trail within the park and several loops. However, dogs and pets are not al-lowed, and there are restrictions on bicycles and horses. It is a “park for all seasons,” with pleasant views year-round and beautiful greenery in the spring months. Start at the entrance and follow Edgewood Trail or Sylvan Loop, then choose a path. There are many possible routes at this park, making it a fun place to come back to again and again. To get there from Interstate 280, take the Edgewood Road exit and go west. Park on the south side of Edgewood Road near the freeway or at Cañada and Edgewood roads.

Purisima Creek trail This old county road used in the 19th century follows Purisima Creek through steep canyons. It’s quiet, wide, and 8.4 miles round trip. Alternatively, you might make a loop from the North Ridge Trail or Harkins Ridge Trail and return on the Whittemore Gulch Trail for a vigorous 6.8-mile trip. Or, from the Higgins Purisima entrance, try the challenging 9.1-mile loop: take Purisima Creek Trail to the Soda Gulch Trail, connect with Harkins Ridge Trail, the North Ridge Trail and then end with Whittemore Gulch Trail. Some trails are open only for hikers; others are open to equestrians and cyclists. There is even a 1/4-mile-long trail, funded by the Peninsula Open Space Trust, for the physically limited. Access the preserve from either Higgins Purisima Road or Skyline Boulevard 6.5 miles south of Highway 92.

The Coastside’s scenic beauty has a funny way of grounding people while simultaneously elevating them to new heights. Many of us have chosen life on the coast because we are drawn magnetically to the pris-tine beauty that surrounds us. The rolling surf bleeds into the beach; the sand meets a barrier of bluffs that protect the community from the sea. A short distance from the shore, gentle slopes grow into grassy foothills, eventually rising to mountainous peaks — all within walking, biking or riding distance. Spring and summer are the ideal seasons to explore this region. What follows should not be mistaken for an all-inclusive list of Coastside retreats. It focuses on day hikes for those traveling on foot, but includes great ideas for cyclists, equestrians and overnight campers.

Devil's slide trail Just opened in late March 2014, this paved mile and a half long trail is actually the former Highway 1 before it was diverted into the newly constructed Tom Lantos Tunnels. Magnificent views of the Pacific and, on a clear day, the Farallon Islands. Rest areas and interpretive signs are welcome additions for visitors. Wide, paved roadway is suitable for walkers, bikers, strollers etc., but the hills are challenging. Limited parking on the north and south sides. Access is from either Pacifica or Montara.

Año nuevo state Reserve

People come from around the world to experience this treasured coastal strip, many of them hoping to glimpse the reserve’s most famous attraction elephant seals in action. Año Nuevo is a three-mile round trip to the Año Nuevo Point. It’s an easy hike until you get to the sand, where there are dunes that make the trek more challenging. There is beach access for disabled people. Bicyclists and equestrians prohibited. From Northern Elephant Field, with binoculars, you might spot elephant seals, which molt during the spring and summer. No pets allowed. Permits are free and you get them at the entrance station from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. South on Highway 1, 30 miles from Half Moon Bay.

Butano state Park Located in a quiet, woody canyon, this park is a favorite for campers. It’s popular among hikers as well. The beautiful, challenging 10-mile Canyon Trail connects you to a series of circuits through the park. Equestri-ans, bicyclists and dogs are prohibited from trails. Call (650) 879-2025 for more information. Butano is off Highway 1, 4.6 miles south of Highway 84. Take Pescadero Road east for 2.6 miles, turn south on Cloverdale Road and then go five miles to the park entrance on the left.

Memorial Park Nestled in the redwood forestland behind Pescadero, Memorial Park offers outdoor enthusiasts a tranquil retreat. Inside the park, visitors will find a series of trails snaking past campsites and picnic areas to breath-taking vistas of the Santa Cruz Mountains and swimming holes in Pescadero Creek. Perfect for campers and hikers, the park prohibits bikes, horses and dogs. Trails from the park connect to adjacent properties Pes-cadero Creek County Park, Portola State Park and Butano State Park. To get to Memorial Park, take Highway 1 to Pescadero Creek Road and drive eight miles east — the park entrance is on the right-hand side of the road.

With views of the San Francisco skyline, this 7.5-mile course is considered one of the best cross-country paths in the Bay Area. Maintained by College of San Mateo volunteers, the trail is open exclusively to hik-ers, joggers and runners. Be sure to bring a water bottle — the trail area can get pretty hot on sunny days. Athletes have been known to pass out from heat exhaustion when running this trail. To get there from the coast or Interstate 280, take Highway 92 east and exit at Ralston Avenue. Turn right on Hallmark Drive and continue to Hallmark Park. Park on the street and enter the trailhead by the path near the tennis courts. From I-280, take Highway 92 east and follow the directions above.

Pulgas Ridge open space Preserve

This 366-acre Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District preserve contains two beautiful loop hikes and joins the San Francisco Watershed. There are six miles of trails to travel for hikers only. One three-mile loop is a surfaced road designed for hikers and cyclists. An alternate route, the Polly Geraci Trail, meets up with the main loop. To get there, take the Edgewood Road exit from Interstate 280 and go east one mile. Turn left on Crestview Drive and left on Edmonds Road.

An overviewIf Pacifica is a bedroom community, it certainly has a lovely west-facing picture window. Nearly 40,000 people live along the northern stretch of San Mateo County coastline, drawn by an easy commute and the Pacific Ocean. It’s divided roughly into about a dozen neighborhoods, from Fair-mont in ithe north to Park Pacifica in the south. Unlike, the towns to the south of Devil’s Slide, Pacifica has a more dense, suburban feel. That isn’t all bad: City residents benefit from an array of mu-nicipal services, including police and parks.

HistoryOriginally, the city was home to a pair of Ohlone Indian villages, one on San Pedro Creek and the other on Calera Creek, near what is now the Rockaway Beach neighborhood. Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola is said to have discovered the San Francisco Bay by climbing Sweeney Ridge in 1769.Fast forward to the city’s incorporation in 1957. It brought together nine unincorporated communities, many of which remain some-what distinct neighborhoods today.

surf cultureLike many beach towns in California, Pacifica lays claim to signifi-cant surf spots. Linda Mar State Beach is a popular spot for Bay Area beginners. More advanced surfers might take on Rockaway Beach and Sharp Park Beach, — but be warned: strong rip cur-rents and big swells can make these spots a challenge for anyone.Pacifica has six annual surf competitions and a number of surf shops from Crespi Boulevard to Pedro Point.

BeachesPerhaps the two most inviting coastal spots in Pacifica are Rocka-way Beach and Linda Mar State Beach.Rockaway is south of the Pacifica Pier and is a popular place for tourists and locals alike. There are restaurants and hotels, and even the Pacifica Visitor Information Center should you need maps or other ideas for things to do in Pacifica.Linda Mar is a long crescent to the south and one of the area’s best spots for surfing and just generally playing in the sand. You might see whales from this vantage in the spring, and bring your dog — as long as you pack the leash.

Pacifica PierLooking for a good place to see the waves? You might try Pacifica Pier, 2100 Beach Blvd. In the winter months, huge waves crash on the pier, but even when the water is calm there is likely to be plenty to see. You might see crabbers working the pylons or sim-ply bikers and walkers getting some exercise by the ocean.

sAnCHez ARt CenteRThe art center at 1220-B Linda Mar Blvd. is one of the cultural gems of San Mateo County. The gallery is open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. There is a full schedule of exhibits and receptions throughout the year at a center funded by grants, donations and other private sources.

PacificaIt is now a straight shot from Montara to Linda Mar thanks to a pair of 4,200 foot bores and a 1,000 foot bridge. Pacifica is where a lot of Coastside residents head to to shop for groceries, dine in a variety of res-taurants or be entertained at venues not found on the Coastside. It is also a very popular destination to for surfers and anglers. Pacifica is a string of communities hugging the coast, each with it's own flavor. Here are a few items that make it unique — and a few of the most popular places to visit.

Linda Mar is also known as Pacifica State Beach. Located at the southern end of Pacifica, this crescent- shaped beach is one of the most popular surfing spots in Northern Califor-nia. Showers, bathrooms and a large, paved parking area make it a very convenient destination.

Rockaway Rockaway Beach is tucked between Linda Mar and Sharp Park. Popular for experi-enced surfers and beach walkers. Restaurants and hotels make this quite a popular spot for visitors.

sharp Park Beach The Pacifica Pier is the most prominent feature of this long beach. The area includes picnic facilities, a walking promenade and vistas of Mori Point Headlands.

PARKs AnD tRAiLs

Milagra Ridge This 239-acre open space is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Locat-ed just off Sharp Park Road at College Drive. Hiking is mostly level and paved. Dogs allowed on leash. The entrance to Milagra Ridge is off of Sharp Park Road in Pacifica. From Highway 1, follow Sharp Park Road to the east, or from Skyline Boulevard (High-way 35), follow Sharp Park Road to the west. Turn north on College Drive and continue about 1/4 mile to roadside parking at the Milagra Ridge gate.

Mori Point Headlands Originally part of the Spanish San Pedro Land Grant, Mori Point's site has seen many enterprises over the last 120 years. The Mori Point Inn, built in the 1870s,was the last structure on the site. Its colorful history includes a ranch house, hotel, speakeasy, res-taurant and dancehall. It mysteriously burned to the ground in 1966. The land itself has been of interest to real estate developers since the early 1900s. The effort to preserve Mori Point is a success story of community involvement. Mori Point was added to the GGNRA in 2000. The park can be accessed from the Rockaway Beach quarry Trail or along the levee at Clarendon and Beach Blvd. Dogs allowed on leash.

sweeney Ridge This federally protected hiking area of ridges and ravines between San Bruno and Pa-cifica offers steep and rolling coastal hills overlooking the San Francisco Peninsula. On a clear day views of the Farallon Islands, Mt. Tamalpais, Point Reyes and Mt. Diablo can be seen. The trail is open to hikers, equestrians and bicyclists from 8 a.m. to dusk. The driveway leading up to the trailhead in the Shelldance Nursery lot is a bit obscure. Fol-low it to the large, gravel parking lot where a large GGNRA sign resides in the north-west corner, marking the area as Sweeney Ridge.

san Pedro valley Park This vast area embraces the middle and south forks of San Pedro Creek's Steelhead spawning grounds. Group picnic areas, nature trail, views of the Brooks Waterfall and a visitors center are featured here. Open 8 a.m. to dusk. In the Linda Mar neighborhood, take Oddstad Blvd. to Rosita Road. $5 entrance fee for cars.

Frontierland Park Tucked away on a hillside in Park Pacifica, Frontierland Park is a true Bay Area gem. Large sloping lawns and an extensive children's playground make it a popular spot for birthday parties, events and family fun. Barbecue areas and picnic sites available. Located at the top of Yosemite Dr. in the back of Linda Mar. Free parking.
