The current i s sue of Sovremennik introduces the first chapters (

two new works. In h is novel Joseph and his non-brothers, Alexandt .. Guidoni pictures the l a s t years of Stalin's reign, intrigues within hi I . . inner circle, and particularly a possihle coup against his mastt

contemplated by secret police chief Ber ia Lev Fabricius bases th plot of h i s novel Passion for Mike on Canadian reality.

Sovremennik continues i t s l ine of strenghtening t i e s betwee Russian writers and representatives of brotherly Slavic literature: primarily Ukrainian and Byelorussian writers. The present i ssue of o magazine reaffirms this policy. Well-known Byelorussian writer Ka: tus Akula contributes two articles: Sovremennik. Its alleged sins ( plot against i t ? and Maxirnov deliberates... The first article unmask the scheming of the chauvinists against Sovremennik caused by tt, magazine's support of captive nations' struggle against the Sovit colonialism. In his second article Akula argues against an awkwar political Utopia of Vladimir Maximov, editor of Paris-based Russia1 language magazine Continent.

Sovremennik also publishes one Ukrainian x i t i c who devotes h I attention to the book of memoirs of popular Ukrainian writer U1: I Samchuk. The reprint of an article by Latvian historian V. Kalnynsk I (taken from New York magazine Facts and Ideas) informs u s about't' I Soviet aggression against the Baltic countries in 1939 -40. I I In the column Historiography and philosophy we find Peter Bc 1 dyrev's very interesting article Dictatorship o f the masses and tl I fate o f Russian culture; conclusion of Igumen Gennadiy (Eykalovich

article What i s knowledge? ; polemical article by E. Karmazin Lacql ring o f Israel's history, and A.Guid0ni.s article Spanish Republic 1873 as portrayed by Russian press.

Noted are the contributions by professors of American univer: ties. E. Kuleshova dwells on the subject of Saltykov Shchedri~ A. Dynnik -on Griboyedov,Nina Avseenko analizes creative works Solzhenitsyn,Valentin Zukerman writes about works of Arkadiy Lvl

The i s sue presents the poems of the following poets: M.Volkov G. Panin, A.Rostovskiy, G.Riskin, S.Petrunis, G.Rumiantseva, S.T. and others.

I In Bibliography we find K.Akula, Oleg Bukov. George Suidor Igumen Gennadiy (Eykalovich), Evgeniy Karmazin. Vladimir Rudin kiy.

Considerable space is occupied by Forum. with contribution from Dimitriy Panin, Vladimir Rudinskiy, Alexander Udodov ar others.

In response to two centennial jubilees (birth of Stalin a1 Trotsky) Andrey Druzhinin devotes h is feature piece enti t led T jubilees o f Yanus (Stalin and Trotsky).
