The chapter members are currently working in the areas of Nanophosphors and Quantum wells, Transparent Thin Film Transistors, Oxide Phosphors and Thin Film Electroluminescent Devices, Hydrothermal Growth of Nanoparticles, Spintronics, Transparent Conducting Oxides, Plasma studies, Ferroelectric Random Access Memories, Holography and Conducting Polymers. All the members of the chapter are actively participating in the programs organized by the chapter and Dept. of Physics. Current year the following activities were carried out by the SPIE CUSAT student chapter. Academic Training The SPIE-CUSAT Student Chapter in association with Department of Physics, Cochin University of Science and Technology conducted Academic Training for Graduate/Post graduate Students of various institutions in Kerala. Six students have completed their academic projects in the areas of Optoelectronic Devices, and Thin films and nanoparticles for bio applications. The students were trained this year in the following areas.

Annual Report (October 2014 to September 2015)

Cochin University SPIE Student chapter is celebrating its 10th year by organising various programs

to celebrate the international year of light IYL 2015. At present the chapter has 25 members. The chapter

members are currently working in the areas of Nanophosphors and Quantum wells, Transparent Thin Film

Transistors, Oxide Phosphors and Thin Film Electroluminescent Devices, Hydrothermal Growth of

Nanoparticles, Spintronics, Transparent Conducting Oxides, Plasma studies, Ferroelectric Random Access

Memories, Holography and Conducting Polymers. All the members of the chapter are actively participating

in the programs organized by the chapter and Dept. of Physics. Current year the following activities were

carried out by the SPIE CUSAT student chapter.

of Science and Technology conducted Academic Training for Graduate/Post graduate Students of various

The International Conference on “ Energy Harvesting, Storage, and Conversion ’’ ( IC- EEE

2015)

Department of Physics and SPIE CUSAT student chapter jointly organized an international

conference on “Energy Harvesting, Storage, and Conversion” short titled as IC-EEE 2015. It was organized

during 5-7th of February 2015 with a preconference workshop on 4th, the conference addressed the current

advances and challenges in the energy sector especially the renewable and clean energy scenario.

During the three day conference, papers and presentation were made in following topics: Solar Cells and

Cells and Super Capacitors, Flexible Devices for Energy Storage and Materials for Large Area Display

Devices and LEDs, Organic and Polymer LEDs, Semiconductor Nanostructures in Solar Cell Applications.

Open House Program January 16-17, 2015

Open house program was organized by SPIE to make aware of the public the various research activities

going on in the department. During this two days more than 1000 visitors including studnets from the nearby

schools visited the department.

Physics – Scope and Awareness for School Children

March 31-April 05, 2014

SPIE Student Chapter organized student outreach programs to attract talented students to the

fascinating world of Science and Technology. The workshop provided an opportunity to students to interact

with the faculty members, listen to new developments in scientific fields and also witness some of the

advanced experiments being carried-out in the research laboratories of the department of Physics and also

to gain hands on experience on various core experiments in Physics, telescope making etc.

Inaugural Function of the Year Long Celebrations of IYL 2015

21st July 2015

International Year of light: The yearlong celebrations of IYL 2015 was inaugurated on 21st

July 2015 by Dr. Suresh Das, Principal secretary, Science & Technology ,Govt: of Kerala and gave

keynote address on Luminescent Organic materials. This was followed by the talks on Imaging through

random scattering medium by Dr. Rakesh Kumar Singh, lIST Trivandrum, Luminescent Materials for

phosphor- converted LEDs, by Dr. Biju P. R, M.G. University, and Thin film solar cell with kesterite

absorber by Dr. S. N. Potty, C-MET Trichur. one day workshops at twenty colleges in Kerala is

scheduled as part of IYL 2015.

National workshop on Current Trends in Applied Physics (CTAP 2015)

29th and 30th April , 2015

National workshop on current trends in applied physics was organized by SPIE. The program

was inaugurated by Dr. K. Paulose Jacob, honourable Vice Chancellor, CUSAT. Various talks were

delivered by Prof. E. Krishnakumar, TIFR, Mumbai, Dr. Reji Philip, RRI, Banglore and Prof. M. Sabir,

retired professor, CUSAT.

Lectures

Lecture by Dr. K.P. Vijyakumar

Chapter conducted lectures on various research topics. Experts from the field of both theoretical

and experimental physics were invited to deliver the lectures. Prof. L. M. Kukreja from Raja Ramanna

Centre for Advanced Technology, Indore, was invited to deliver lecture on 10th October 2014 on “ Quantum

Correction for Low temperature Electrical Conductivity of SiZnO thinfilms. On 28th October 2014 Prof. K.

P. Vijayakumar of Cochin University of Science and Technology delivered lecture on chemical spray

pyrolysis technique for thin film solar cell fabrication possibilities, benefits and difficulties.

SPIE Annual meeting

SPIE member Mr. Titu Thomas participated in the SPIE Annual meeting held at San Diego,

USA on 8th August 2015. He is the winner of SPIE officer travel grant for the year 2015. He also

participated in the Optics and Photonics 2015 conference held at San Diego during 8th to 11th of

August 2015. Mr. Titu Thomas presented posters entitled “ Simple ‘One Step’ Spray process for

CuInS2/In2S3 hetrojunctions on flexible substrates for Photovoltaic Applications ” in Photonics

2015.

SPIE CUSAT celebrations IYL 2015 has scheduled 20 one day seminars at various colleges in the

state Kerala during the period July- December 2015.

Monthly lecture programs will be continued.

SPIE Discussion forum-Monthly informal discussion on various current research topics by the

students.

Outreach programme; “Physics-Scope and Awareness” will be conducted in April 2016.

Special Training program for competitive exams like NET, GATE will be provided to the M.Sc.

Students.
