EGIS & LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT
European leader in light rail engineering, Egis has made a vital contribution in the revival and
modernization of the tramway. We take part to the success of iconic projects, often conducted
under the constraints of tight budgets and schedules.
Engineering project management of over 800 km of LRT lines

MODERN TRAM SYSTEMS
Modern tram systems have significant advantages
| fast and reliable system
| at-grade infrastructure
| seamless urban integration
| reduced costs compared to a metro system
But limited capacity compared to metros or BRT.
How can we increase the tram system capacity while keeping its
advantages?

HOW TO INCREASE ITS CAPACITY?
Increased tram capacity, form a broad perspective it is easy:
| Increase rolling stock unit capacity
| Decrease headways
Looking at details, it is a new concept that has to studied from various
perspectives:
| Stations
| Operation
| Rolling stock
| Systems
| Energy

EGIS RESEARCH PROGRAM
Egis has launched a research program aiming at studying these aspects in
order to reach a capacity of at least 12 000 persons per hour per direction.
This presentation will focus on
| Stations
| Traffic management

STATIONS
Issues
| Stopping time (duration and reliability)
| Flows managements
| Emergency evacuation
| Access control and fraud deterrence
| Urban footprint
CODATU XVII – High capacity tramway November 2017 8
STATIONS
Methodology
| Analyze the urban integration of 7 different concepts for stations
| Perform dynamic flows simulations
CODATU XVII – High capacity tramway November 2017 9
STATIONS EXAMPLE – THREE PLATFORMS
Boarding
passengers
Alighting
passengers
• Segregated boarding and
alighting flows
• No conflicts between
passengers
• Reduced passenger
boarding time
• This station can be
implemented on one site of
the road next to a
pedestrian square to ease
access
• Pedestrians can cross tram
and cars separately

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
Methodology
| Analysis of different junction configurations
| Dynamic modeling of trams and car movements
Design and operating guidelines for tram junctions (minimum tram
headway, restriction on car movements, tram speed…)
CODATU XVII – High capacity tramway November 2017 11
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
Modeling shows that trams with double unit capacity and half-headways
compared to standard tram systems (capacity x4) crossing of large junctions
remains acceptable and generates few additional disruption on the tram
system.
The impact on traffic is comparable to standard tram
systems due to specific mitigation measures such as left
turn restrictions.

HIGH CAPACITY TRAM CONCEPT
Compared to standard tram systems:
| Capacity x4 (up to 12 000 pphpd)
| CAPEX x2 (20 M€/km in developing countries)

WHERE IS THE CONCEPT SUITABLE?
Favorable conditions for the high capacity tram concept
| Wide corridor (>15m) rather linear
| Single line, no overlapping of lines
| Acceptable junction density (> 300m)
Commonly found in emerging countries
Compared to other systems with similar capacity, the high capacity tram
has better ability to integrate within dense urban areas.

INDIAN CONTEXT
Historical predominant urban mass rapid transit in India
| Suburban Rail (from 1928 in Mumbai)
| Bus networks
As per 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017) LRT should be provided in all cities with
a population of million +
As per 2013 census it represents 53 cities in India
In larger cities, LRT could be part of citywide MRT network, as medium
capacity feeder
| Metro (from 1984 in Kolkata)

THE RIGHT LRT FOR INDIA ?
Conditions are different than in Europe
| Higher demand level
| ROW limited
A specific LRT system has to be designed for Indian context
| Congested roads, mixed traffic
| Jay walking common
Different technologies : elevated
sections, robust rolling stock…
A different social model : manned
stations, priority for sustainable
development, an inclusive transport
system… Harrapan urbanism (1 700 BC)
