THENECRONLEGIONSLongago,theNecronsruledthegalaxyasitsimmortaloverlords,beforethemarchoftimeandthewoundsofwarforcedthemintohibernation.FormillionsofyearstheirarmiesslumberedendlessranksofdeathlesswarriorsheldinstasisuntilthetimewhentheNecronswouldonceagainseektodominatethestars.Atlonglast,thattimehascomeInthegatheringtwilightofthe41stMillennium,theNecronsarereturning.Overlordsandphaeronsstrideimperiouslybeforesilentranksofdeath-maskedwarriors,theirboomingvoicespromisinggloriousbattleintheirlong-forgottentongue.Eldritchenginesofwarrise,propelledbyarcingengines,whilemechanicalarachnidsscuttleintheirwake.World-endingweapons,thelikesofwhichthegalaxyhasnotseenformillionsofyears,stirtoterriblelifeundertheexactingattentionsofCrypteks.Rankuponrankofskull-facedsoldiersspilloutfromtheirtombs,likeatideofcold,hardsteel.Intheirbillions,theNecronsarerisinguptoreclaimwhatwasoncetheirs,andthewholegalaxytremblesattheircoming.TheNecronsareaterroroutoftime,anancientempirethatexistedmillionsofyearsbeforetheEmperorforgedtheImperiumfromMankindswarringworlds.Once,theyweremortalcreaturesoffleshknownastheNecrontyrashort-livedandquarrelsomerace,whoseconstantwarsofconquestbroughtthemtotheverybrinkofannihilation.Whenfacedwithextinction,ratherthanfademeeklyintoobliviontheNecrontyrchoseadevilsbargain,surrenderingtheirsoulstothegodlikeCtansotheymightliveonforever.ThuswereborntheNecronsablightuponthegalaxythatwouldspreadouttoconquerinthenameoftheCtan.Duringthislong-deadage,theNecronsfoughtwhatwouldbecomeknowntosomeastheWarinHeaven,scouringplanetsandentiresystemsoflife.Themetallicmarchoftheirlegionsechoedacrosscountlessbattlefieldscontinentswereshatteredandevenwholestarsconsumedundertheadvanceoftheirseeminglyinvinciblearmies.TheNecronsenemiesfellintheiruntoldbillionsbeforetherelentlessonslaught.Andyet,nothingenduresforever.Intime,eventhegreatestempiresfractureandcrumble.Tostaythehandofentropyandescapethewrathoftheirgatheringfoes,theNecronschosetoenteranaeons-longslumber,reasoningthatwhentheyawokethegalaxywouldoncemoreberipeforconquest.Thattimeisnow.

IMOTEKHTHESTORMLORDImotekhstandsattheheadoftheSautekhDynasty,greatestofthearisen

Necronempires.Apeerlesswarriorandpitilessleader,whenImotekhawoketodiscovertheSautekhdividedbyinfighting,heruthlesslytookcontrolandnamedhimselfphaeron.Underhisimplacablecommand,hisdynastyhasreclaimeddozensofsystems,andunitedmanydisparateNecronworlds

underitsgloriousbanner.Askilledgeneralandbrilliantstrategist,therearefewwarlordsalivethatcanhopetomatchImotekhsmasteryofwar.Temperedbythelongyearsofconflict,thephaeronwasalreadyagiftedcommanderbeforeheenteredhibernation.Themillenniahavedonenothingtodullhistalents,and

enemieslearntotheircostthattofacetheStormlordistofacetheirdoom.

THEPRICEOFPOWER

LongbeforeMankindcrawledfromtheprimordialooze,theNecrontyrwagedwaruponthegalaxy.Bornofadyingworld,withbodiescursedbypitifullyshortlifespans,theywereapeopleboundbyanobsessionwithdeath.OvermillionsofyearstheNecrontyrspreadslowlyacrossthevoid,theirarmiescrushingthosewhoresistedtheiradvance,whiletheirkingssoughtimmortalitythroughgrandiosetombsandgloriousdeeds.Inthisgoldenageofconflict,thelivingsoldiersoftheNecrontyrmadewarupontheirenemies.Butastheirdomainexpanded,sotoodidtheNecrontyrfractureinpurposeanddesign.Thusbeganaseriesofbrutalcivilwarsthatwouldseethedeathofdynastiesandthemurderofkings.Intheirdesperationtounitetheirpeopleunderacommoncause,thephaeronsstartedawarwiththeOldOnes,apowerfulandenigmaticracethathadlongkeptthesecretsofimmortalityfromtheshort-livedNecrontyr.ThiswouldbecomeknownastheWarinHeaven,andthegalaxywouldburnforanagewithitsfury.IntheirhubristheNecrontyrthoughttheycoulddefeattheOldOnesandtheirallies,butthoughtheirempirewasvastandtheirwondersmany,theNecrontyrsoonfacedextinction.Tosavehispeoplefromthewrathoftheirfoes,Szarekh,theSilentKingoftheNecrontyr,madeadealwiththeCtan.Alienstargodsofunimaginablepower,theCtanofferedtheNecrontyranallianceagainsttheOldOnes,andthesecretofimmortality.Thoughheknewsuchapowerfulgiftwouldhaveitsprice,Szarekhaccepted.AndsotheNecrontyrbecametheNecrons,theirfleshsearedawayinthefurnacesofbiotransferenceandreplacedbylivingmetalandcold,soullesspurpose.Filledwithrenewedwrath,andbackedbythereality-sunderingabilitiesoftheCtan,theNecronsrekindledtheirwarupontheOldOnes.Worldsranredwithbloodandcitiescrumbledtoash,andonebyonetheOldOnesfortressworldsfell.YetitwasonlyinhishourofvictorythatSzarekhfinallyunderstoodthetruehorrorofwhathehaddone.Hispeoplehadbeendestroyed,replacedbyahollowraceunderthethralloftheCtan.Desperatetoatone,hebetrayedhisimmortalallies,andturnedhissoldiersuponthemwhiletheygorgedontheruinoftheirdefeatedfoes.Sowerethestargodsinturnbroughtlow,andthoughtheycouldnottrulybekilled,SzarekhbrokethemintoshardsandimprisonedthemwithinTesseractVaults,thattheirremainingpowermightservetheNecronscauseasbothanenergysourceandaweaponofdirepotency.TheNecronlegionshadbeendecimatedbythefuryandcarnageoftheWarinHeaven,whiletheirtreacherouswaragainsttheCtanhadseenbillionsofsoldiersandwarmachinesobliteratedbythestargodswrath.Topreservewhatremainedofhisempire,Szarekhdecreedthathispeoplewouldenterintohibernation.Soitwasthat,astheirremainingenemiesgathered,theNecronssealedthemselvesawaywithincolossalstasis-crypts.Szarekhsworethat,whentheyawoke,theNecronEmpirewouldriseoncemore.

THEAWAKENINGLikeawhisperedbreaththatgrowsintoaragingstorm,theNecronsarereturningtothegalaxy.Beneaththesurfaceofcountlessworlds,theirsoullessarmiesstirwithinstasis-crypts.Meanwhile,cold-heartedOverlordsraisetheirpitilessgazetothestars,theirmindsturningoncemoretodreamsofdominationandwar.ForsixtymillionyearstheNecronshaveslumbered,theirtombworldsfilledwithdormantarmiesandinactivewarmachines.Nowtheyareawakeningasiffromhalf-rememberednightmares,andthegalaxyshuddersattheirreturn.Fromvastcrypt-fortresses,burnishedlegionsemergeintothedyinglightofthe41stMillennium,asteelsearipplingbeneaththecracklingenergydischargeofesotericbattleengines.Cohortsofswarmingmetalscarabs,talon-limbedhorrorsandspectralassassinsaccompanythem,theiralienmindsfocussedonasinglepurposetoreclaimthestars.However,timehaswoundedtheNecronsinwaystheirancientenemiescouldnot.Whatwasonceagalaxy-spanningnetworkofdynastiesunderthewatchfulgazeoftheSilentKingisnowascatteringofisolateddomains.Entiretombworldshavebeenlosttheirstarsystemsconsumedbycelestialcatastropheorplunderedbyyoungerraces.Othershavesufferedtechnologicalfailurethecoldhandsofentropydestroyingvitalsystemsanddoomingtheirinhabitantstoanendlesssleep.Evenamongstthosewhohavewoken,thescarsoftimecanbeseen.ThisisnomoreevidentthaninthemindsoftheOverlords,whoareoftentouchedbymadness.Theirpersonalitieswarpedanddistortedbymillenniaofstasis,theypursuetheirowndamagedagendastothewoeofalltheyencounter.Yet,despitethebillionslost,billionsmoreremain.Thesevastalienarmiesstandreadyforwar,determinedtoreturntheNecronstotheirrightfulplaceamongthestars.Oncountlessworlds,legionsofmetallicwarriorsmarchforthfromancientvaultsandintothecoldlightofdyingsuns.Raceswiththemisfortunetohavemadetheirhomeupontheseplanetsareannihilatedinstormsofgaussfireandparticlebeams,untilonlytheirsmokingremainsandthecharredruinsoftheircitiesremain.ThisisthefateofallwhoopposetheNecrons.Intheeyesofthephaerons,theyoungracesaremerelythedustthathasgatheredbetweenthecracksoftheirempire,andlikedust,theNecronswillsweepthemaway.

AnotherstrobingpulseofplasmafiretoreacrosstheNecronlines,rippingmoltenfragmentsfromranksoflivingmetalwarriors.Outintheazure

haze,puppet-likewraithboneconstructsandagileEldarGuardiansstalkedtowardthephalanxofNecronWarriorsclusteredaroundtheflickeringdolmengate.Then,fromoutoftheripplingportal,aMonolithtoreinto

reality,itsimmenseshadowfallingacrosstheadvancingEldararmy.Filledwithnothingbutcontemptforhisenemiesofold,NemesorOrunakh

emergedfromtheMonolithseternitygate,greenenergysparksdancing

acrosshisembellishedwarraiment.AthisbackcameImmortalsandfreshlegionsofWarriorsfromtheSautekhDynasty.

Inlockstepranks,theNecronsadvancedintotheteethoftheEldargunline,theirmetallicbodiesweatheringthesporadicstreamsofmonomoleculardiscsinastormofsparks.AllaroundtheOverlordhiswarriorsexchangedfirewiththeenemy,thewhineofshurikenroundsacontinuoushigh-pitchedwailamongthecrackofgaussflayersasthetwosidesclosed.ButtheEldarwerefarfromdauntedbythesenewarrivals,theirforcessurgingforwardastheyattackedwithrenewedfury.VypersandjetbikesscreamedoutofthehazewhilealineoftoweringwraithbonewalkersfiredsearingbeamsofplasmaintotheNecronsmetallicranks,eachblastandincandescentbolt

sendingruinedWarriorscrashingtotheground.WithaflickerofthoughtOrunakhsummonedtherestofhisarmy,andina

tempestofcracklinggreenlightningtheyburstintorealitythoughthepulsingdolmengate.Moreslab-sidedMonolithsappearedfromthecurtainoflight,theirportalsglowingwithpaleenergies,whilesickleshapedattackcraftscreameddownfromthefirmament,theirweaponsspittingdeath.

OrunakhstrodeintotheforwardranksoftheEldar,hiswarscythehewingapartfragilemortallimbsinarcsofblood,whileathissidehisLychguardhackeddownanyEldarboldenoughtodaretolandablowupontheir

Overlord.EveninthefaceofOrunakhsimplacableadvancetheEldarheldtheir

ground.AtthiscloserangetheirweaponswereprovingdeadlyagainsttheNecronWarriors,theconstantrainofshurikensseveringlimbsand

penetratingmetalskulls.Beforelong,afieldoffallen,sparkingNecronremainscarpetedthebattlefieldbetweenOrunakhandhisenemies.Withaslow,dramaticgesturetheOverlordunveiledablazingemeraldorb.Spideryboltsoflightningsprangoutfromtheobject,washingthescorchedgroundwithgreenenergy.WheretheboltsstruckfallenNecrons,metalliclimbsknittedbacktogetherandbatteredWarriorsrosetotheirfeet.Beforetheonslaughtofnewlyrisenfoes,theEldarGuardiansvanishedunderawave

ofgraspingsilverclawsandhollow-eyedskulls,theirdeathscreamsdrownedoutbythemarchofathousandmetallicfeet.

THENECRONDYNASTIES

FormillenniatheNecronDynastiesruledthegalaxyunderthedominionoftheSilentKing.NamessuchasSautekh,OroskhandMephritweresynonymouswithmilitaryprowessandpoliticalglory,hundredsofworldsprostratingthemselvesbeforetheimmensemightofthesedynastiesphaerons.Underthebannersoftheirgrandarmiesthedynastiesheldswayovervaststretchesofthegalaxy,rulingtheirpeoplewithanironfistandcrushinganywhodaredriseagainstthem.Biotransferenceservedonlytoextendthismartialrule,untilmentalprogrammingboundeverymemberofaphaeronsdomaintohiswill.TimeandtheGreatSleep,however,havetakentheirinevitabletollupontheNecronEmpire.Muchhasbeenlost.Once-greatrealmshavecrumbled.DynastiessuchasRythek,HorthandAstreonareallbutforgotten,theircrownworldsreducedtostellardustandtheirarmieslittlemorethanafadingmemoryofmartialgrandeur.However,thesegravelossesaside,hundredsofdynastiesremainandmanymorearestilllockedinstasis.Thosedynastiesthathaveawokennowwagewaramongstthestars,withambitionstousherinanewageofNecrondomination.PrincipleamongtheseistheSautekhDynasty,ledbyImotekhtheStormlord.TheSautekhlegionsarosereadyforwar,andunderthestrategicmasteryofImotekhtheyhaveremorselesslycarvedthemselvesanewempire.ItisImotekhswilltounitehisraceandclaimhisrightfulplaceamongitsrulers.TheSautekh,however,arefarfromtheonlydynastytowaxinpower.InthegalacticnorththeworldsoftheAtunDynasty,onceamightypoweramongtheNecrontyr,stirtolife.Withintheirstasis-cryptsareterriblewarenginesandweaponstoweringmachinesofmassdestructionwhichthegalaxyhasnotseenformillionsofyears.TheOgdobekhDynasty,renownedforitsCrypteksandtheirmasteryofthearcanesciences,arebuildinganempirewroughtfromsolarcitiesandworldsofpureenergy,whiletheMephritDynastyseektoreclaimtheworld-endingenginesthatonceslewthestarsoftheirfoes.Notallthereturneddynastieshaveenduredthemillenniasointact.TheworldsoftheCharnovokhDynastywerescatteredacrosstheEasternFringe,andhavesufferedintheImperiumsongoingwarsagainsttheTyranids.TheembitteredsurvivorshaveformednewmakeshiftlegionswithwhichtoterrorisetheImperiumscolonies.Similarly,theOroskhDynastywasravagedbytheflayervirus,andmanyinitsrankshavesuccumbedtotheaffliction.Now,whenthearmiesoftheOroskhmarchtowar,vastcohortsofFlayedOnesfollow,drapedintheskinsoftheirenemiesandsteepedinthestenchofdeath.Architectsoftheirownoutcaststatus,theNekthystDynastyarewidelyregardedastraitorsbytheotherdynastiesforactsofbetrayalduringtheWarsofSecession.Theyhave,however,foundunlikelyalliesintheyoungerraces,muchtothedisdainoftheirkin.

THEAWAKENINGEMPIRE

ScatteredthroughoutthevastcelestialwildernessslumberstheimpossiblyancientempireoftheNecrons.Ignorantofthearmiesthatliebeneaththeirfeet,theyoungracesbuilttheircivilisationsuponthetombsoftheold.TheImperium,everswifttoconsideritselftherulerofthegalaxy,spreadfarandwideacrossthestars,unawarethattherewasanotherthathadalreadylaidclaimtothattitle.Now,aftermillionsofyearslockedinthetimelessembraceoftheirstasis-crypts,theNecronEmpireisstirringoncemore.Sofar,butthebarestfractionofNecrontombworldshaverousedtoterriblelife,butwitheverypassingyearthenumbergrows.EachtimeaNecronplanetisrestoredacascadeistriggered,anddozensmoresoonfollow.VastsolarempiresarecarvedanewfromtheburningcivilisationsandfallenarmiesoftheNecronsenemies.Piecebypiece,thefragmentsofthedynasticdomainsarebeingdrawntogether,seditiousOverlordsandvengefulphaeronssearingthestarscleanforthereturnoftheirmightykingdoms.WhattheImperiumcannotknowisthat,shouldtheNecronseverfullywakeandunite,theywouldfaceafoeasnumerousasthemselves.Fornow,theImperiumhashadbutatasteoftheNecronsmight,anditisfortunateforMankindthattheNecronsremaindividedbymadnessandconflictingagendas.However,thesearebutthefirststumblingstepsofagiantasitgatherspace,andevennowpowerfulleaderslikeAnrakyrtheTraveller,ImotekhtheStormlordandtheSilentKingareunitingtheirpeopleunderacommoncause.

ARMIESOFCONQUESTTheNecronswagewarastheydidintimesofoldtheirimmortalphaeronscastingtheirarmiesoutintothegreatseaofstarstoconquertheworldsoftheunworthy.Armiesoflocksteplegionsandcontemptuousgeneralsdescendupontheirfoes,honouringtheirancientoathsoffealtywiththedeathofworldsandthebloodofcivilisations.Aeonsago,theNecronEmpirewasatapestryofinterlockingdynastiesthatstretchedacrossthestars.Eachdynastyspreadoutarounditscrownworldlikeplanetsorbitingasun,thoseclosetothelightofthephaeronsrulebaskinginhisglory.Thecrownworldwasthephaeronsseatofpower,andthewealthofitsvassalplanetsflowedtowarditlikeanincomingtide.Secondarytothecrownworldwerethecoreworlds,eachoneruledbyaLordorOverlordofthephaeron,vyingamongthemselvesforthefavouroftheirmaster.However,thefurtheronetravelledfromthecrownworld,themoreweaklyitsinfluencecouldbefelt.Theoutermostplanets,knownasfringeworlds,weremerecoloniesthatknewlittleoftheirphaeronsbeneficence.LikethehierarchyofNecronplanets,thearmiesofthetombworldsareeachbeholdentotheirbettersjustaseachnobleisapartofhisphaeronsempire.Similarly,theNecroncourtsformpoliticalwebscentredaroundtheregentofeachtombworld.CryptekscreateandmaintaintheNecronsesotericmachinery,whiletheTriarchPraetorianstaketheirplaceasenforcersfortheSilentKing.Underthese,liketheclawedlimbsofthephaeron,arethetwinarmsoftheNecronsoldieryandhisenginesofwar.ThemasterofatombworldwillrelyuponhisWarriors,ImmortalsandTombBladestobethehardedgeofhiswill,whereasLychguardandDeathmarksarespecialistsusedmoresparingly,andonlyuponthoseconsideredworthyoftheirattentions.Bycontrast,potentmachinesofdestructionsuchastheMonolithandDoomsdayArkarereservedforwarsofannihilationorextremeenemyresistance,wheretheirprodigiousfirepowercansweepawaytheirfoesinablazeofmatter-tearingenergy.Beneathaphaeronsteemingranksofsoldieryandforbiddingtechno-armouryaretheauxiliariesthosemoreakintoalliesthantruewarriorsofthedynasty.CountedamongthesearetheDestroyerCultsandFlayedOnepacks.Largelyuntrustworthyandoftendangerouslyinsane,Destroyersaretoleratedonlyforthehavoctheywreakinbattle.Likewise,FlayedOnesareacursethatseemstofollowthelegionstowar,regardlessofwhethertheyarecalleduponornot.Finally,beloweventhesetwistedmisfitsoftheNecronEmpirearetheshackledshardsoftheCtan.Inspiteoftheirworld-splittingpowers,itgivesthephaeronsgreatpleasuretoknowthatthestargodsarelesserinstatusthaneventheleastoftheirslaves.

ANKHOFTHETRIARCH

AllNecronsbearthemarkoftheTriarch,abrandupontheirlivingmetalskinthatbindsthemtotheirrace.TheTriarchwereatriumvirateof

phaeronsthatruledtheNecrons,andtheSilentKingwasthegreatestofthethree.Inthe41stMillennium,theabsenceoftheSilentKingandthelongyearsoftheGreatSleephavetransformedtheAnkhoftheTriarchintoareminderoffadedglory.SomenoblesstillseeitasthefoundationoftheNecronEmpire,othersmerelyasanechoofalong-deadage.However,the

AnkhremainsasymboloftheNecrons,andeventhosewhohavelostfaithinitspowerstillbearitonacartoucheadorningtheirtorso.EachdynastywillvarythecoloursoftheAnkhandcartouchetomatchthoseoftheirphaeron.However,despitethesecosmeticalterations,theshapeoftheAnkhremainsunchanged,eachexactingcurveandlineperfectlyreproduceduponthe

Necronschests.Eachdynastyalsohasitsownglyphs,variationsontheAnkhthatidentifyitssoldiersaspartofaparticularphaeronsarmies.ThesesymbolsaresometimeswornalongsidetheAnkhoftheTriarch,butareusually

secondaryinsizeandplacement,mirroringtheancientrelationshipbetweenthephaeronandtheTriarch.Lessersoldieryrarelybearthesedynastic

symbolsinfull,astheyaregenerallyunworthyofsuchanhonour;instead,elementsofthedynasticglyphareusedtoidentifyindividualphalanxes.
