C oen’s Power Plus technology recently surpassed all industry standards. Coen’s R&D created the highest quality, lowest emissions and most reliable duct burner in the world. Power Plus can handle the most challenging jobs. When a power developer based in Nebraska needed peak summer power and low CO emissions, Power Plus helped meet their requirements. In 1996, Tenaska ordered a Westinghouse 501F gas turbine generator and a Deltak fired- HRSG for their Celburne, Texas site. The advanced technology “F” Class gas turbine included power augmentation and supplemental duct firing to boost power production in peak summer season. The original duct burner performed well in normal turbine modes, but exceeded permitted CO emissions in power augmentation mode at high firing rates. With oxygen levels at 10.9% and moisture at 16.5%, the turbine exhaust conditions represented one of the most extreme ever experienced by a duct burner. Coen solved the problem in two steps. First, using Coen’s extensive in-house computer modeling capabilities, they modified the flow baffles to enhance mixing, which produced very beneficial results. Next, Coen installed their Power Plus duct burner to further reduce CO emissions far below the permitted levels. This unique burner performed successfully under all turbine conditions, including full power augmentation during last summer’s heat wave. Power Plus reduced stack emissions of CO by over 50%. This easily kept the plant in compliance in all operating modes. Power Plus demonstrated unparalleled performance, quality and reliability. Power Plus is the answer for Coen installations. Coen’s Power Plustechnology recently

surpassed all industrystandards. Coen’s R&Dcreated the highestquality, lowest emissionsand most reliable ductburner in the world.Power Plus can handlethe most challenging jobs.

When a power developerbased in Nebraskaneeded peak summerpower and low COemissions, Power Plushelped meet their requirements. In 1996,Tenaska ordered a Westinghouse 501Fgas turbine generator and a Deltak fired-HRSG for their Celburne, Texas site. Theadvanced technology “F” Class gasturbine includedpower augmentationand supplementalduct firing to boostpower production inpeak summer season.

The original ductburner performed wellin normal turbinemodes, but exceededpermitted COemissions in poweraugmentation mode athigh firing rates. Withoxygen levels at 10.9%and moisture at 16.5%, the turbineexhaust conditions represented one ofthe most extreme ever experienced by aduct burner.

Coen solved the problem in two steps.First, using Coen’s extensive in-house

computer modeling capabilities, theymodified the flow baffles to enhancemixing, which produced very beneficialresults. Next, Coen installed their PowerPlus duct burner to further reduce CO

emissions far belowthe permitted levels.

This unique burnerperformed successfullyunder all turbineconditions, including fullpower augmentationduring last summer’sheat wave.

Power Plus reducedstack emissions of COby over 50%. Thiseasily kept the plant incompliance in all

operating modes. Power Plusdemonstrated unparalleled performance, quality and reliability.

Power Plus is the answer for Coeninstallations. Power you can dependon…with tomorrow’s technology today.

ULTRA LOW EMISSIONS

The Sacramento General Services Central HeatingPlant, which provides steam to 23 State Government

buildings, provided a unique challenge for this new UltraLow NOx burner. The Central Plant’s existing burnersystem exhibited capacity limitations, low efficiency andreliability and operational difficulty meeting emissions. Thenew burner system needed to overcome theseshortcomings and meet the new NOx emissionsbelow 9 ppm.

Coen, with the assistance of GRI, SouthernCalifornia Gas Company and the California AirResources Board, supplied the new QLA Ultra Low NOxburner as a retrofit package with Coen’s proprietary FyrMonitor Control System. The existing flame safeguard andair ductwork were reused to reduce the retrofit cost. Theprevious burner could not operate with maximum airpreheat without exceeding NOx limits and required waterspray during high load conditions.

The startup results easily met the new emission regulatedlimits of 9 ppm NOx and 20 ppm CO. By operating at fullair preheat over an 8:1 turndown ratio, efficiency wasimproved substantially. The unique design proved that lowemissions are possible in very difficult boiler applications.

Superior Performance Features:

• Ultra Low NOx: <9 ppm NOx on gas

• Very Low CO: <10 ppm on gas

• Wide Turndown: typically 10:1 on gas,8:1 on oil

• Low Excess Air: 10-15% at high fire

• Able to Handle Rapid Load Swings

• Liquid Fuel Capability

• Wider Stability Limits to AccommodateReal World Applications

SPRING 2000

STARTUP SUCCESS

Coen’s new microprocessor basedi scan flame scanner has yet another

successful startup. Virginia Power’s BremoBluff Power Station has 32 i scan flamescanners installed on a split furnace utilityboiler that fires No. 2 oil and coal as fuels. The scanners have been configured for twoflame types and oil and coal aredemonstrating excellent flamediscrimination capabilities.

All thirty-two scanners are networkedtogether and tunable from a computer (PC) located withinthe control room. The scanners are very difficult to gainaccess to because of the tight spacing around the burners, however the network proved to be very convenient, allowing us to manage each scanner remotely.

Virginia Power retrofitted the boiler with Low NOx CERSFC burners. The burners fire No. 2 oil for warm-up fueland coal as the main fuel. Each burner, a total of 16, hastwo i scan flame scanners. Both flame scanners monitorthe warm-up fuel flame using one of the two Remote File

Select inputs. The secondfile monitorsthe mainflame. Theadvantage ofthe RemoteFile Select option is that it allows the user to configure andmonitor two distinct flame patterns, produced by differentfuel types, with one flame scanner.

Coen’s iscan on-screenadjustments are a breeze.Using this simple softwarehelps avoid burner frontadjustments in tight situations.

“The ability of the iscan to learn flame-on/flame-off modes was a great time saver atstartup and their operating performance hasbeen exceptional”.
