兩年一度的「世界文化藝術節」轉眼已踏入第十年。

我們特意搜羅世界各地的演藝瑰寶,帶領觀眾跨越疆

界,細味各國深邃的文化與動人的風情。

阿根廷探戈為藝術節揭開序幕;布宜諾斯艾利斯探戈

舞團演出《貝隆夫人》,以濃艷激情的舞姿,演繹阿

根廷國母一生傳奇。壓軸登場的中國越劇表現婉約之

美;上海越劇院除演出經典劇目,還呈獻全新創作的

《甄嬛》和《雙飛翼》。探戈與越劇風格迥異,但同

樣華麗優美,令人嘆為觀止。

今屆精彩節目源源不絕。格魯吉亞國家舞蹈團的演出集靈巧與力量於一身,賞心

悅目;街舞勁旅 Jinjo Crew把韓國文化元素注入西方街舞,創意非凡。六屆格林

美獎得主酋長樂隊演奏傳統愛爾蘭樂曲,帶來雋永率性的即興演出;西非歌后安

潔莉克.淇祖首度來港,以渾厚明亮的歌聲擁抱世界,頌揚大愛精神。香港的藝

團亦會演出音樂和戲劇節目,讓世界文化藝術節添增本地色彩。

除了舞台表演外,藝術節還會舉辦多項延伸活動,透過展覽、導賞、分享會、工

作坊、沙龍講座、徵文活動、戶外演出、街頭舞鬥盛會等不同形式,讓觀眾體會

世界文化的瑰麗丰姿。

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the biennial World Cultures Festival, we have gathered artistic gems across the globe, leading our audience to a world of charming cultures that knows no boundaries.

Tango Buenos Aires kicks off the Festival with The Song of Eva Perón, a spectacular tango performance which portrays the legendary life of the First Lady of Argentina through flamboyant and passionate dancing. Shanghai Yue Opera House will conclude the Festival with its graceful rendition of classical plays and two new productions, Empresses in the Palace and A Poet’s Lament. Tango and Yue opera might seem disparate in style, yet they both exude elegance and gorgeousness which never fail to mesmerise.

The Festival features a strong line-up of exciting programmes. The folk dances of the Georgian National Dance Company Sukhishvili display a perfect mix of agility and strength. Street dance group Jinjo Crew injects cultural elements of Korea to their ingenious dances. Winner of six Grammy Awards, The Chieftains performs classical Irish folk music and impresses the audience with its brilliant improvisation. In her début concert in Hong Kong, African diva Angélique Kidjo celebrates our shared humanity and embraces the world with her powerful and lustrous voice. Concerts and drama featuring Hong Kong arts groups put local flavour into this cross-cultural event.

Apart from stage performances, the Festival also offers an array of extension activities including exhibitions, pre-performance talks, sharing sessions, workshops, salon series talks, writing award scheme, outdoor performances and street dance battle to facilitate the appreciation of world cultures.

布宜諾斯艾利斯探戈舞團很榮幸能夠參與「世界文化藝術節 2015─ 瑰藝十載」。

我們為大家帶來《貝隆夫人》的亞洲首演,希望觀眾能更了解探戈,並盡情享受這

2015 – A Decade of Exquisite Arts’. By bringing here the Asia première of The Song of Eva

Perón, we hope that the audience can know more about tango and enjoy the performances.

“Eva was a visionary, a good person with high objectives. She became a hero, a saint to us… She became our voice.“

“The title refers to the voice of Eva, the power of her speech, and the message she has left to the world of freedom and courage.“

“The show follows her life, from her arrival to Buenos Aires as a teenager to her becoming the most representative First Lady in our history. Each of our female dancers characterises Eva in a different period of her life.“

“Tango talks about emotions rooted in our genes, (such as) the sense of loss from being an immigrant, the happiness and sorrow we live every day.“

“Tango talks about union. The dance is done (with two people) embracing all the time. We put our hearts together when we dance. We become one single being when dancing tango.“

“Today we can show how tango has evolved. We can show the audiences more colours of our dance and music, because tango in the last 30 to 40 years has been very active and popular in Argentina and in the whole world.“

Tango Buenos Aires布宜諾斯艾利斯探戈舞團

布宜諾斯艾利斯探戈舞團是阿根廷最出色的文化代表之一,以真正的、最具代表性

Tango Buenos Aires has become one of Argentina’s great cultural exports, known throughout the America, Europe and the Far East as the most authentic and uncompromising representative of the tango.

Tango Buenos Aires was created for the “Jazmines“ festival at the famous Buenos Aires cabaret “Michelangelo“ by renowned composer and tango director Osvaldo Requena in 1985. The company met with tremendous success and was immediately added to the season of the General San Martin Municipal Theatre.

In 1986, the company traveled to the USA to represent Argentina at the Latin-American Festival, which took place at the Delacorte Theatre in New York City's Central Park during the month of August. This event was followed by an extensive tour throughout the USA, along with trips to Mexico, Puerto Rico and El Salvador, followed by a return to the USA via Miami and San Francisco. In December 1986, the group appeared on NHK television in Tokyo, and it completed 62 performances throughout Japan, as well as a CD recording entitled Quejas de Bandoneón. Since then, the company has toured around the world extensively, including a lengthy tour of the principal cities of Argentina in 1987, in addition to various appearances on television channels, including a series sponsored by the Argentinian Ministry of Culture, as well as performing for the international tango festivals in Spain and Germany, and followed by a Latin American tour in 1989.

In the 1990s, Tango Buenos Aires extended its tour to other parts of the world, including participating in the Adelaide Festival and the New Zealand Festival; giving performances in Southeast Asian cities like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, as well as other Asian countries such as Japan and China; performing for the third time at the International Festival in Granada; performing in Northern European countries at the Kuopio Festival in Finland and Denmark; as well as touring throughout South America, Portugal and Greece. It toured the USA for its first coast-to-coast tour during the 1998-99 season to great critical and popular acclaim.

In June 1999, the renowned pianist Cristian Zárate succeeded Mr Requena as Music Director, and Pablo Mainetti, one of the world’s greatest bandoneon player, joined the orchestra. In 2005, Julian Vat, Argentina’s most prolific composer and leading musician assumed the title of Music Director.

The company returned to North America in the Winter of 2003 for a two-and-a-half month tour of the USA, followed by a two-month coast-to-coast tour of the USA in 2007 and 2011, as well as a two-and-a-half month coast-to-coast tour of the USA and Canada early this year.

Born in Argentina, Rosario Bauzá is the third generation manager of DANIEL Artists & Concertos, which was established in 1908 as an international leader in managing the touring activities of a wide range of areas from classical to world and jazz music, as well as dance and theatrical attractions, and fine arts media productions.

Bauzá has worked extensively on productions for theatre and stage with Maestro János Kulka, Maestro Gábor ötvös, Teresa Berganza, including tours with Ballet of the Colon Theatre. She has presented many concerts at the Colon Theatre, the Coliseum Theatre and Luna Park in Buenos Aires for performing artists such as tenor José Carrerras, piano duo The Labeques, Montserrat Caballe, Barbara Hendrix, and Paula Mijenes. In addition, Bauzá co-produced the open-air concert with Plácido Domingo, Ana Maria Gonzalez, and Maestro Enrique Ricci & Philharmonic Orchestra of Buenos Aires at the Hippodrome of San Isidro.

In 1988, the Minister of Culture for Argentina honoured Bauzá by requesting her being a cultural ambassador for the tango with the creation of different groups, like Tango Buenos Aires, Tango 09, Hot Tango, and different tango orchestras. With the blessing of the Minister of Culture, she has served as the Producer and Artistic Director of Tango Buenos Aires, touring around the world.

In 2004, Bauzá produced a performance in the Arena of Monterrey with the famous composer Yanni with great success. She has also produced performances with the Camerata Bariloche with different invited soloists.

Fernando Marzán continues the legacy of the Marzán family as a line of reputable musicians in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He started his musical studies at the age of six and attained the titles of Choir Director at 14 and Professor of Music from the National Conservatory of Music at 17.

As a highly sought-after tango pianist, he toured with the Broadway and London hit production of Forever Tango since 1994 for almost seven years throughout the USA, Canada, Japan, and many other countries around the world for years. He also played for the most prestigious tango houses, like Michelangelo, Casablanca, La Ventana, and Tango Mio.

Marzán was the Music Director for numerous successful tango shows, including Tango Seduction (2002), Tango Buenos Aires (2003), Tango Emotion (2004), Tango Dreams (2005), Tango Premium (2008), El Viejo Almacén (2009), Tango Romance (2010), and Milonga, a critically acclaimed tango show directed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and produced by Sadler’s Wells in 2013.

He has also participated in the recording of numerous CDs, like the soundtracks of Evita, starring Madonna and The Impostors, starring Oliver Platt and Stanley Tucci. He also arranged and recorded with many renowned artists in various areas, including Ruben Gonzalez, Taro Hakase and Maria José Mentana. As a soloist, he produced five albums, including Bendita Buenos Aires, Recuerdo, Gotanda Tango Station, Tanguera and Tangueando en los ´40, in which he included some of his compositions.

Choreographer, dancer and teacher of tango and Argentinian folk dances, Hector Falcón began his dance education at the age of five and was turned into a Professor of Argentinian folk dance at the age of 15. Since then, he has worked with several folk dance companies, including the Ballet de Amalia Garcia, Ballet de Machaco, Ballet de Salta, Bombos de Oro, Los Ñaquis, Los Diablos Gauchos and Ballet Argentina Hoy. He has been a main figure in major tango houses in Buenos Aires and has toured the world as solo couple in numerous successful shows, including Tango Emotion, Tango Buenos Aires, Tango Passion, Tango Metropolis, Fascination Tango, and Tango Seduction.

Falcón has been involved in choreography since the 1990s and gained status as one of the best tango choreographers today. In 2003, he was in charge of choreographing and being a main figure for Tango Buenos Aires. His latest works as a choreographer, artistic director and star include Tango Gala, La Ventana, and Contra Tango. He has taught at the University of Buenos Aires, the Centro Educativo del Tango, and the Centro Cultural San Martin, and conducted tango workshops in more than 30 countries.

Lucrecia Laurel was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the age of 18, she moved to Los Angeles to study theatre and photography. She has always been inspired by tango from an early age, by watching, listening, and touring with her mother Rosario Bauzá, Artistic Director of Tango Buenos Aires. Laurel has been actively involved in the making of, story and artistic development of the shows since returning to Buenos Aires in 2008.

The Argentinian tango has a mixture of African and Spanish antecedents, and also a strong influence from the Argentinian milonga which is sung by Gauchos, the Argentinian “cowboys“. In its beginnings, the tango was an ill-famed dance, being very fashionable in dance halls and cabarets, and also the choreography called for the couple to hold each other very close. Tango choreography allows for a lot of creativity, requiring breaks in the rhythm and perfect coordination between the dancers.

The tango's constant companion is piano, although it has been accompanied by violin, guitar and flute. Nowadays, the most typical instrument is the bandoneon, which is an accordion similar to the concertina.

The tango represented many infinite feelings and an expanded mental and moral evolution of itself and of the city that is depicted in it. It deserved and suffered many rejections despite the fact that it knew how to rise to the occasion to become the very symbol of the city of Buenos Aires. We should not forget that the tango has grown with that city and its literature. A lot has been written about the origins of the tango. There are so many questions! What is the etymology of the word “tango“? Where was it born? How did it take shape? Which influences did it receive?

Let us consider that many answers are lost in time, but many believe that the word “tango“ derives from mispronunciations of the word “tambor“, meaning “drum“.

With respect to its birth, there are so many versions with so little documentation, that we ought to be cautious with its presumed origins. During the decade of 1850, the Cuban habanera established in Buenos Aires was believed by many to be the successor of the old Spanish counterdance. The habanera spread throughout the “Ribera“, the river shores of Buenos Aires, thanks to the sailors taking the commercial route between the Río de la Plata (Buenos Aires) and the Antillas. It quickly became established in Buenos Aires and was gradually transformed into the milonga.

At the beginning of the 1880s, the milonga occupied a relevant position in popular tastes. The milonga began to be danced by the compadritos of the city. The meeting places for the dancing were also referred to as “milongas“, and this word is still used today to name the tango dancing places.

At this time, everything started to change: the architecture of the city, its language, habits, foods, dresses, image of the streets, carriages, etc. The first line of the “tranguay“ (tramway) was established, communications became faster, and the well-to-do abandoned the south to settle in the north. Hallway (tenement) houses and indigents (“conventillos“) multiply, and the tango began to command attention.

Thus the tango evolved through the riverside settlements, hallway houses, brothels, and dancing pubs, in a rapid metamorphosis, from the habanera to milonga, and finally the tango.

Later, with the contribution of Spanish and Italian migrants as well as the criollos (first descendants of the migrants) and Africans, this social mixture of races and beliefs, this murmuring mass of the “orillas“ (shores) of Buenos Aires, introduced the new rhythm in the popular meeting places. The primitive tangos were improvised, and its melody was attractive; it was transmitted among the interpreters through the exclusive use of their instruments. The accompanying dance was in a state of creation. First, there were only male dancers. Later, a couple of female dancers finally appealed to the feline grace of the woman. That day and not before, the true tango was born, that is, the complete and functional tango.
