Welcome to Your Learning Team!

• You will work together as a team with those you are sitting with for the remainder of the quarter.– Step 1: Individually, write an interview question on a

sticky note from the third drawer. – Step 2: Go around the circle and introduce yourselves

with an adjective in front of your name that starts with the same letter. For example, I could be “Bossy Bingold.”

– Step 3: Ask the group your interview question and listen attentively to their responses, asking follow-up questions when necessary. The person who is the “heart” card will begin by asking a question and then work clockwise.

Laying Some Common Ground as a Class

• In order for us to be successful as a class this year, we have to lay some common ground for all of us to build upon: – Can you agree that you like to work in

teams?– Can you agree that the point of

collaborative work in this class is to accomplish something?

– Can you agree that we need a standard set of expectations in order for our teams to accomplish something?

Let’s Establish Some Class Norms

• A “norm” is an standard/expectation that everyone agrees to follow for the betterment of a working group

• Let’s make norms that list what is important to you; however, Mrs. Bingold will also share her norms for this year’s learning and we will compare.

• Take out the little sticky notes. You will have 3 minutes to write as many “norms” for what you feel creates a “good class”. Write one norm per sticky note and place it on your desk.

Let’s Establish Some Class Norms

• Take the computer paper on your desk.

• As a group, organize the norms you created on the sticky notes into categories by grouping them together by similarities.

• Then, label your categories.

Class Procedures During Group Work

• During collaborative activities, if Mrs. Bingold needs your attention she will say “If you hear me, clap once, if you hear me clap twice...” Stop all work and listen to directions.

Understanding Teamwork: Whole-Class Activity

• It is important that we can work together as a whole-class to achieve our goals. We are on this journey together, and when we learn to respect, support, and appreciate each other’s unique differences, we will reach our destination quicker and happier.

• Whole-Group Task: – Balloon Challenge: Holding hands as a class,

keep the 7 balloons in the air for 3 minutes without letting it drop or letting go of a hand.

Let’s Establish Team Norms and Shields

• It’s important to know the personalities and expectations of the people you are “co-laboring” with; therefore, you will need to create individual group norms as well: – Discuss the additional norms that you would

like to set as a group; you might consider: • Attendance• Copying• Participating• Choosing the “easy” work• Being on their phone

Understanding Teamwork: Small Group Activity

• It is important to understand that being part of a group means being part of a team, working together, supporting each other for a larger goal.

• We are going to work on building that sense of teamwork today.

• Your Group Mission: – Your group will be given a 100 piece puzzle. Each

person will take equal pieces face down. No one is allowed to touch those pieces except the original person. You must communicate as a group to put your puzzle pieces together by first figuring out the picture and then talking to each other through the construction. The team that finishes first will win a clothespin!
