In1982,Sega’srevenueswouldsurpass$214million,andtheyintroducedtheindustry’sfirstthree-dimensionalgame,SubRoc3D.Thefollowingyear,anoverabundanceofarcadegamesledtothevideogamecrash,causingSega’srevenuestodropto$136million.SegathenpioneeredtheuseoflaserdisksinthevideogameAstronbelt,anddesignedandreleaseditsfirsthomevideogameconsole,theSG-1000forthesecondgenerationofhomeconsoles.

OnNovember27,1998,SegalaunchedtheDreamcast,theirfinalconsole,inJapan.Theconsolewascompeti-tivelypriced,partlyduetotheuseofoff-the-shelfcomponents,butitalsofeaturedtechnologythatallowedformoretechnicallyimpressivegamesthanitsdirectcompetitors,theNintendo64andPlayStation.Anana-log56kmodemwasalsoincluded,allowingforonlinemultiplayer.Itfeaturedtitlessuchastheaction-puzzletitleChuChuRocket!,PhantasyStarOnline,thefirstconsole-basedMMORPG,“Quake3Arena”andAlienFrontOnline,thefirstconsolegamewithonlinevoicechat.TheDreamcast’slaunchinJapanwasafailure;launchingwithasmalllibraryofsoftwareandintheshadowoftheupcomingPS2,thesystemwouldgainlittleground,despiteseveralsuccessfulgamesintheregion.

OnJanuary23,2001,astoryraninNihonKeizaiShimbunclaimingthatSegawouldceaseproductionoftheDreamcastanddevelopsoftwareforotherplatformsinthefuture.Afterinitialdenial,SegaJapanthenputoutapressreleaseconfirmingtheywereconsideringproducingsoftwareforthePlayStation2andGameBoyAdvanceaspartoftheir“NewManagementPolicy”.SubsequentlyonJanuary31,2001,SegaofAmericaoffi-ciallyannouncedtheywerebecomingathird-partysoftwarepublisher.Thecompanyhassincedevelopedintoathird-partypublisherthatoverseesgamesthatlaunchongameconsolesproducedbyothercompanies,manyoftheirformerrivals,thefirstofwhichwasaportofChuChuRocket!toNintendo’sGameBoyAdvance.OnMarch31,2001,theDreamcastwasdiscontinued.

ByMarch31, 2002,Segahadfive consecutivefiscal years of net losses.TohelpwithSega’s debt,CSKfounder IsaoOkawa, before his death in 2001, gave the company a $695.7millionprivate donation, andtalkedtoMicrosoftaboutasaleormergerwiththeirXboxdivision,butthosetalksfailed.DiscussionsalsotookplacewithNamco,Bandai,ElectronicArtsandagainwithMicrosoft.InAugust2003,Sammyboughttheoutstanding22%ofsharesthatCSKhad,andSammychairmanHajimeSatomibecameCEOofSega.Duringmid-2004,SammyboughtacontrollingshareinSegaCorporationatacostof$1.1billion,creatingthenewcompanySegaSammyHoldings,oneofthebiggestgamemanufacturingcompaniesintheworld.
