Visit us at Historic There they were. The light reflecting from theglistening stainless steel had caught my eye,…… cool, I remember those. My mind immediatelyflashed to the clatter and pungent aroma of theschool lunch rooms we hung around as kids. AsI reactively stretched my hand out to take a closerlook at these battered, scratched, and dentedpieces of my childhood puzzle, a voice echoedfrom behind. “You’ve got to be kidding”. Mywife’s reminder that every object associated withmy childhood wasn’t quite as interesting as Iseemed to think, and, that although the sign onthe front of the building said antiques &collectibles, you can’t believe everything youread. Still, who’s to say that old school lunchtrays won’t someday find a place in the pantheonof Americana. I gave my wife that “but they’re soretro” look, but quickly retreated. We both knewthey would only join a growing menagerie ofchildhood memories deposited in our storageunit. Still ……
We’ve all heard the phrase “buying back ourchildhood”, and as we get older, for manycollectors, the primal obsession is the drive torecapture our past. We scour shops, yard salesand flea markets, hoping to find toys, sportsmemorabilia, music and other accoutrements ofour youth, paying homage to our childhood withprominent displays in our homes and offices. But, if you’re thinking you want to join in the fun, you’d better check your bank balance first. It turnsout that many of us are really more interested incollecting the childhood we wish we had. We’renot looking for that brown craft lunch bag wetoddled off to school with, we want thelithographed Superman lunch box with matchingthermos that the kid sitting next to us had. Sortof a memory upgrade if you will. And, thatupgraded childhood can cost plenty. A quicklook at collectibles reflecting the popular cultureof the 1950’s and 60’s turned up a 1954 AdcoSuperman Lunchbox for $550, a set of 1964 Beatlesbobble head nodders for $490, a 1950’s Marx FortApache for $330, a Mattel Fanner 50 cap gun setfor $225, and a 1959 #1 Barbie for a mere $2,250.You get the idea. But don’t despair, there arelots of less iconic memories out there, that can bepicked up without breaking the bank. You canstill buy a 1960’s Batman or Twiggy lunch boxfor under $50.00, and there are lots of dolls, matchbox cars, Tonka trucks and myriadmemories that can be bought for just a fewdollars. And if all else fails, don’t worry, youcan always think about those intriguing lunchtrays.
Looking back is not just an old mans game. Itseems to be generationally contagious. Dozensof trendy resale shops beckon 20 & 30something’s with signs touting “vintage or retro”,and shelves filled with merchandise from 70’s,80’s & 90’s. They better get started while theycan still afford it. ‘goo-goo-ga-joob’.

BROWSE AROUND
PLAYS CUPIDLove is in the air at the Browse AroundAntiques Mall in Logan. When I stopped bythe other day to say hello to owners Greg& Betty, I overheard a customer explainingthat his best friend was on the way overwith his girlfriend, who he intended tosurprise with a marriage proposal, andwanted permission to video record themoment.
It seems the love stuck couple had first metwhile shopping at Browse Around, and, as ithad become their favorite store, theprospective groom could think of no moreappropriate place to pop the question.Well, I know we all love Browse Around, but this fellow really takes his antiquesseriously. We hope his girl gave him theanswer he was looking for.
If the wedding is a go, the happy couplecan drop a line to the New Century Collectorand we’ll send them a $25.00 gift certificateto the Browse Around as a wedding gift.
