Umpiring

This year at Coastlands Netball Kapiti has been a long and tiring year, but also a rewarding one. Libby Ross won the junior umpire of the year cup for her efforts. She was also awarded her New Zealand Centre badge at the end of the season. Katelynn Ireland, who won the same cup last year, was awarded her Centre badge this year as well as merits for organising the „junior whistlers‟ umpiring team which many Kapiti College netballers were involved with. Kimberly-Ann Roach also had an amazing year umpiring. Kimberly-Ann has her New Zealand zone theory and is working towards her full zone badge. To obtain this, she umpires the regional secondary school league. She also umpires representative tournament games, Netball Kapiti games, and umpires for other colleges (Sacred Heart). Sara Sutherland was awarded her Netball Kapiti Elementary Badge for her efforts. Special mention to Sophie Nally, Sam Powers, Sienna Law, Hannah Stokes and the team at Netball Kapiti for the great year. (Abigail Canham)

Kapiti College Term Three – 29/09/2017

Staff vs Students:

Wednesday lunch time saw the resumption of the staff vs students contest with the fourth game of the year. The students were flying high after their upset win earlier in the term and riding a confident wave going into Indoor Football. Much like the New Zealand Warriors of the past 10 years, the staff had entered into a “rebuilding phase” following their shock loss to the students in Touch Rugby at the beginning of Term 3. Fresh legs were recruited with Mr. Collette, Mr. Edwards, Mr. Wood-Hill, Mr. Cooper and Mr. Brannigan all making their first appearance for the staff team. With smart recruitment bringing an element of Football nouse to the staff lineup, the stage was set for a tight contest. The students thought differently however and stormed out to an early lead courtesy of a goal to Liam Gilden on the back of some slick passing and genuine Football skill. The staff stuck to their game plan of “hack it down field and see what happens” and were justly rewarded with a goal to Mr. Thompson just prior to the half time whistle. The first half proved to be a physical contest with several eager contests over the ball.

Half time couldn‟t have come soon enough for the staff as the apprehension expressed by commentators pre-match around the fitness levels of the staff were beginning to ring true. A rousing halftime speech from Ms. Thompson - who was once again fulfilling her role as Staff Spiritual Advisor - implored her team to put their bodies on the line and saw an increase in intensity from the staff. The students continued the second half as they had for most of the first half by making most of the play. Daniel Harford-Silas was a magician with his feet and caused serious issues for any staff trying to contest for the ball. The students sent several waves of attack into the staff goal box where Mr. Cooper was a stand out in goal, saving several thunderous shots, with only one goal getting past him in the second half courtesy of another Liam Gilden strike. With only minutes remaining the staff pushed down field for another attack, the ball ending up at Mr. Thompson‟s feet unmarked in front of goal - leading to a controversial finish. As he lined up the shot he was collected in a light and fair tackle by Daniel Harford-Silas, which resulted in Mr. Thompson diving, milking a penalty and drawing the match 2-2. Other standouts for the staff were Mr. Collette and Mr. Knighton acting as defensive pillars in the midfield with Josh Battersby in goal for the students proving a very tough obstacle to score past. Thank you to Ethan Calder-Cass for officiating a fair game and to everyone who came along to support the teams. With this draw, the staff still lead the students 2-1 in the best of 5 series, with one sport still remaining. Indoor hockey anyone? Robbie Hutchinson

Moule on Cassie and Rose Barnett on Bobby

On Wednesday, 20 September the Equestrian Team of four riders - Amy Gray, Laura Gray, Rose Barnett, Niamh Moule headed of to Solway, Masterton to compete at an interschool dressage competition. What‟s special about this team is we had a rider that had never competed before,a rider who only sat on the horse the day before the event and a completely novice horse. For this dressage competition every team member each need to complete two dressage tests. A dressage test is where both horse and rider perform a series of movements and get marked for control and precision. Kapiti College Term Three – 29/09/2017

Year 9 DVC class:

In year 9 DVC, our students have designed a sleep out for themselves. They have learnt how to draw layouts, draw perspective views, draw computer models and the grand finale was to actually build a 3D model. As you can see in this picture, Leana Petrie has truly nailed this assignment! We should have got them onto the Performing arts design.

Performing Arts/Cultural Events:

Barbershop Nationals:

The Barbershop Nationals were held in Auckland this year and despite cancelled flights, we all arrived a little jaded but raring to go, ready to entertain and compete! The Boys' Chorus placed 3rd - the best ever score from any Chorus in the history of KC.

They sang two songs from Toy Story - with woop wooping from the audience to accompany You've Got a Friend in Me - we knew we had sung very well indeed.

The Girls' Chorus sang so well - there was not a dry eye in the house nor back stage after they sang their hearts out. They were rewarded with a 3rd as well! KC has not had a National placing in Girls Chorus for 5 years. The Melodists - our Yr13 quartet sang unbelievably well and placed 2nd in a very tight competition. Our other quartet - L.A.S.S. also scored well and placed 4th. 64 very happy singers returned safely, vowing to go even better in 2018!

The successful group

Debating:

Ben, Evalina, Natalie and Annie

KC's Junior Premier debating team recently competed in their grade finals against Wellington High School at Parliament. Despite losing, they came 2nd place out of 26 top junior teams.

The team, made up of Annie Budd, Natalie Weide, Evalina Brunoro, and coached by Ben Kieboom, have a bright future ahead of them!

Performing Arts Tour:

Hastings Intermediate dancing to one of the bands

55 students and teachers have spent the last four days on the Performing Arts' Tour entertaining at schools in Palmerston North, Waipukurau, Hastings and Rotorua. The acts include kapahaka, dances, bands, barbershop, skits and more.

The aim of the tour is to give a wider exposure to the best of our performers, with the students taking responsibility for the preparation of their acts. With nine performances over 5 days, including a dress rehearsal for Raumati Beach School, it is a taxing but rewarding schedule for all concerned. The group's aim is to entertain and engage the audience, with the finest example of that being every student at Malfoy School in Rotorua dancing in a giant conga line to the last band act of the show.
