The neW voiceof Wilberforce

Have you heard our new radio advert on Viking FM and KCFM yet? It was voiced by one of our own students, Louisa Thompson, who we picked after seeing her perform in the college musical, At the Hop, as feisty waitress and wannabe TV chef, Kathryn.

We knew Louisa would be perfect as the voice of Wilberforce in 2012, so we took her along to the Viking FM recording studios to give her a real taste of radio. The staff at Viking FM were hugely impressed with Louisa’s professionalism in the studio, and we were amazed to hear the finished ad. No doubt Louisa has a very bright career ahead of her!

Listen out for the advert on Viking FM and KCFM, or visit our YouTube channel (wilberforcecollege) and let us know what you think!

Talented students at Wilberforce have been hugely busy over the last few months, performing, exhibiting and showcasing the exciting projects they have been working on over the past year. The biggest event of the year was the Creative Arts Festival, where the college was transformed into a gallery for the night, showcasing the work of students from Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Media and English.

Most students involved were sharing work created as part of their A-level and BTEC courses, but some students were involved in dance, drama and creative arts as part of the comprehensive programme of enrichment activities on offer at Wilberforce. The annual musical also gave students from across the college the chance to take centre stage, and perform to an audience of staff, fellow students and parents.

Students also performed in a dance showcase and variety show, taking audiences through a huge variety of musical, theatrical and dance performances, from Jay-Z covers to an Alice in Wonderland inspired dance. You can see all of the performances on our YouTube channel (wilberforcecollege).

If you are interested in dance and drama, then there will be lots of opportunities to get involved when you join us in September.

olympic Torchpasses Wilberforce

Crowds gathered outside Wilberforce College on Monday 18th June, eagerly awaiting the passing of the Olympic Torch. Residents from neighbouring residential home Saltshouse Haven, pupils from nearby Tweendykes School and people from the local community joined college staff and students to celebrate this exciting moment in history.

The Olympic Torch passed down Saltshouse Road on its way through Hull, as part of the nationwide relay from Athens to the Olympic Stadium. To celebrate, we held a good old-fashioned street party, enjoying tea, cakes and sandwiches, whilst watching dance and musical performances from students of the college. Student band, ‘The Propellers’ entertained revellers with their wonderful acoustic performance, whilst the enrichment dancers had us in stitches with their Austin Powers inspired number.

Anticipation built as the procession of London 2012 vehicles rolled out, and the crowds moved into place outside the college to get the best view. Finally, the moment we were waiting for came as the torchbearer, Cath Delsignore, passed by the college holding the Olympic flame. “Everyone was cheering and the atmosphere was absolutely fantastic. It really was an unforgettable moment”, said one spectator.

There is a whole summer of sporting activity to look forward to, but at Wilberforce it will continue long after the Olympic flame has been extinguished. “The Olympics is such a fantastic event for the country, so we have to keep the legacy going. We will be taking steps to make sure Wilberforce continues to push forward with sports provision and opportunities for our students”, explains Steve Allison from the Sport department. “We will be able to offer a hub in East Hull, and we will go out into the community.”

You can check out our photos from the event, including the front of college after being ‘union jacked’ on our Facebook page.
