JUNIOR SECONDARY

Scholars

Eighteen Junior Secondary students participated in the World Scholar’s Cup in April.  We had 3 teams qualify for the Athens round.  A team that consisted of Ashleigh W, Kaitlin F and Tej S have left for Athens to compete in the next round.Ms Johnstone and Ms Freeman have accompanied the students and we look forward to hearing about their experience in Greece.

Debating news

We recently invited World Debating Coorrdinator, Naomi Williams, to do workshops with the Year 6 and Senior Campus debaters. Ms Williams did two workshops, one for inexperienced debaters and one for more experienced ones.  Students found this workshop to be very helpful and we have seen excellent results once again this year. Congratulations to Ms Merson’s Year 8 Debating team.  They made it to the final round and were narrowly defeated by 1 point against Sunshine Coast Grammar.  Students have performed exceptionally well and continue to develop their public speaking skills each year.

Celebrating Book Week 2017

Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. Classroom teachers, teacher librarians and public librarians develop activities, offer competitions and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading.  On Friday the 18th August, acclaimed author, Steph Bowe, will be with us and will be conducting story sports workshops. Once again our students will dress up for the occasion on Tuesday August the 22nd. The theme this year is ‘Escape to Everywhere.’  The Year 7 students will also have their Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on this day and will be served by the Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students.  This is a week that we promote our love of reading so please encourage your child to participate in the fun.

Canberra trip

A final letter has gone home that outlines that students must be at the Domestic airport by 6am.  Parents should call Fiona Suter, Dean of Students, if they have any questions or concerns regarding the trip.

In week 4 this term our Year 7 students will be undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion and has been included in the costings to help provide our students with an amazing experience.
