"My education has provided me with a wonderful group of people who were my mentors in college, and are now my colleagues and friends as well. I have an amazing network of people to turn to for advice and collaboration. My education has given me the chance to teach at some great local art centers, and it is helping me do what I love: making artwork and showing it to the world.

On a side note, if I hadn’t pursued a college degree at Anoka-Ramsey, I wouldn’t have met my husband (John Shimek)!"

Anoka-Ramsey Education: Associate in Arts and Associate in Fine Arts in Theatre degrees

Transfer: Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Design and Technology from Minnesota State University, Mankato

Current Job: Scene Shop Manager/Guest Designer, Anoka-Ramsey Community College; and Technical Teaching Artist/Technical Director, Yellow Tree Theatre, Osseo, MN

How has your education benefitted you?

"My Anoka-Ramsey education created a foundation to transfer and complete my degree in Theatre. Both the skilled

faculty at Anoka-Ramsey and my desire to challenge myself is what set me up to succeed at Mankato. The skills I have acquired while pursuing my degree will help me however I choose to use my degree. Currently, I have a job in the theatre field managing the scene shop at Anoka-Ramsey. However, my skills are readily transferred to many fields other than theatre. I feel well prepared for the adventures ahead of me."

Benefits of EducationA college education is an investment in yourself.Anoka-Ramsey Community College asked a range of graduates about the benefits of education. Their answers are throughout the pages of this publication.

More jobs than ever require training, a two-year college degree or four-year degree after high school. Experts predict that by 2014, 90 percent of the fastest-growing careers will require some education after high school. The most recent reports predict by 2020, 70 percent of all jobs in Minnesota will require two years of education after high school.

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Current Population Survey

Beyond better employment, education may also provide more:BenefitsCollege graduates typically receive more and better benefits such as health insurance and retirement plans than employees in jobs requiring only a high school diploma.

Personal GrowthSome people have jobs, something they simply do for money. Other people have careers based on their interests, talents and often their education which allow them to continue to grow and be challenged throughout their entire lives.

College Dollars & Sense Think college is too expensive for you? Don’t rule it out because of costs. The U.S. Department of Education awards more than $96 billion a year in grants, work-study assistance and low-interest loans, and the state of Minnesota has programs too. In fact, 73 percent* of Anoka-Ramsey Community College students receive some form of financial aid.

What There are three types of financial aid available to most students:• grants and scholarships (financial aid you don’t repay)• loans (financial aid you must repay)• work-study and community or military service (financial aid you ea

Most students receive a financial aid package put together by the school you plan to attend. It may include all three types of aid.

Who Every student admitted to Anoka-Ramsey Community College who meets the basic eligibility criteria and completes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is eligible for some form of assistance.

Why Financial aid is intended to fill the gap between the actual price of the school and what students and their families can realistically contribute.

How Financial aid is often based on financial need. But to receive any grants, loans or work-study assistance, you need to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To begin your application, visit: fafsa.ed.gov.

When Apply as soon as possible.
