Introduction

This course is offered to second-year engineering students and science students. The course content is designed to complement the concepts taught in the theoretical component of

Physics 2, which focuses on electricity and magnetism. Students are expected to learn how to build basic circuits, perform simple circuitry measurements (for both DC and AC circuits), and examine Ohm’s law and resistance capacitance circuits. Students also measure magnetic fields and magnetic force as well as analyze AC circuits using digital oscilloscope.

Introduction

This course is designed specifically for students enrolled in the College of Health Sciences and for students of biotechnology in college of sciences, which includes departments such

Thermal Properties Analysis Laboratory

Introduction

Currently, this lab is capable of measuring at room temperature the thermal properties of solids that are directly related to heat conduction, namely, thermal conductivity, thermal

diffusivity and specific heat capacity. The transient plane source technique (TPS) known as Hot Disk instruments is used to measure the thermal transport properties of the solid materials. It comprises a completely novel test system designed specifically for measurement of low- to medium-conducting materials, including solids, powders, plastics and composites. It is specifically amenable to measure-ments of building essentials such as woods, fiber-boards, concrete, cement, and insulation materials.

Equipment and Instruments The lab has optional access to the Hot Disk, a chamber and circulating bath for measurements

from 90 °C down to -10 °C with software for automatic measurements and automatic temperature regulation.

Solar and Renewable Laboratory

Introduction

In general the Physics Research Laboratory (Solar and Renewable Laboratory) is equipped with advance systems which can be used for characterization of novel and new semiconductors

materials suitable for the fabrication of various hetero-junction systems used in different photo detectors applications.

Most of the work has been concentrated on II-VI,III-V binary, ternary, and quaternary com-pound semiconductors, specialty semiconductors used in opto- electric devices such as IR photo detectors and solar cells including InSb, InSbBi, GaAs, CdTe, GeSe, etc.

For the last four years, development of a software program has been carried out in coopera-tion with the Perkin Elmer Company (the manufacture of the Spectrophotometer). The program is currently used to incorporate the spectrophotometer technique to determine the energy gap and other optical constants of films prepared with various evaporation techniques under certain conditions.

In addition, the lab is equipped with advanced equipment for measuring the electric and opto-electric properties of thin films and electronic devices including: Resistivity, activation energy, dark and photo conductivity at various temperatures and I-V Characteristic, C-V measurement at dif-ferent frequencies.

The Hall Effect system is used to measure the minority or majority carrier concentration, Hall coefficient, life time, mobility, surface resistivity and type of semiconductor (n- or p-type) at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature.

Spectroscopy Laboratory

Introduction

The spectroscopy lab focuses on investigating intrinsic properties of novel and new semi-conductors. Photo-modulation reflectivity and transmission, and photoluminescence are

employed to determine the band-gap and other properties of semiconductors at temperatures down to 6K. Acoustics Research Laboratory

Introduction

Research in the Acoustics Research Laboratory covers a number of areas on acoustics includ-ing assessment of environmental and occupational noise and ultrasonic characterization of

materials used in bio-medical and engineering applications. In the audible range, research is focused on assessing and monitoring community noise (roads, airports, schools, hospitals, factories, etc.) as well as acoustic mapping using advanced software packages (KADNA). In the ultrasonic range of the sound spectrum, research is focused on ultrasonic characterization on probing properties such bubble formation, concentration and growth in food systems at frequencies ranging from 50 kHz to 20 MHz.

Experiments The Laboratory houses advanced technical equipment and several noise monitoring digital me-

ters. For ultrasonic measurements, the lab is equipped with a high voltage puleser-reciever, which is capable of generating and receiving ultrasonic signals from the 20 kHz to 50 MHz. In Addition, the Lab is equipped with an ultrasonic flaw detector and an ultrasonic multi-layer thickness gauge meter that is capable of measuring thickness of layers down to a fraction of mm in thickness. For noise monitoring, the laboratory is equipped with a precession sound analyzer that is capable of noise source identification, assessing and monitoring environmental noise, measuring building acoustics and industrial acoustic hygiene, noise mapping, sound power, and speech intelligibility.

Computational Capabilities

Introduction

The Applied Physics Department has built a Beowulf style Linux cluster to be used mainly for atomistic and band structure calculations. The core of the cluster is comprised of two

rack-mountable Tyan boards, each with two dual core Opteron processors effectively creating an 8-processor model cluster. An open heterogeneous architecture allows for the addition of any number of processors as soon as they are needed.

The cluster runs rocks 5.0 with MPI (message passing interface library). Examples of parallelized software available to users include NAMD, Gromacs and XMD for molecular dynamics, and wien2k for band structure calculations. A licensed proprietary copy of Maple 13.0 also runs on the cluster. Also included are several modern open source compilers including Fortran 90, C++, and C.

The cluster is available to all University researchers and their collaborators with access to the University of Sharjah LAN.

Introduction

This course is an introduction to many areas of modern genetics and emphasizes the prin-ciples of genetics in each of 4 main areas, transmission, cytogenetics, quantitative and

molecular genetics. The lab will begin by introducing students to the concepts and the statistical laws commonly used in genetics. The key section of this lab will focus on studying how genes are transmitted between generations and what are the laws governing their transmission; these topics will mainly be investigated in Maize (Corn) and Drosophila as the model organism. Environmental Biotechnology Lab

Introduction

This course gives an overview of how biotechnical tools can be applied in waste handling, pre-vention and removal. The specific application of metabolic capability and molecular biology

of microorganisms to degrade environmental contaminants and remediate environmental media will be emphasized. The course format is a combination of lecture, laboratory, visits, projects and oral presentations. The labs will be field-based hands-on experiences designed with a goal to acquaint the students with some of the concepts which are critical to understanding issues in environmental management. The course will focus on topics that range between environmental monitoring, sew-age treatment, bioremediation and clean technology to renewable energy and biofules.
