Newsletter

August 11 2016 No.24 Principal’s Update

Dear Families, Students and

Community Members,

Student Numbers 2017

Endorsing our reputation as a leading

education provider in the area is the

continued growth in our enrolments.

We have 67 Year 12s leaving at the

end of the year and 202 Year 7s

coming in at the start of next year!

Year 7 enrolments continue to

increase, from 100 in 2014, to 150 for

the past two years, to now over 200

in 2017. Our total student population

next year will be approximately 791

students (including our International

Students).

Building Program Update

If you have visited the school recently

you would have seen that very little

of the Forum now remains and the

area is very much a construction site!

It is exciting to finally see our building

program started with a timeline set

for relatively quick completion of both

s i g n i f i c a n t

facilities. The

Performing Arts

Centre and new

canteen will be

ready for the 2017

school year and the new

multipurpose gym by the middle of

the year. The original funding for the

gym was only for a basketball court

sized facility. This has recently been

upgraded to a netball court sized

facility, with additional funding

provided by the Department to make

it a bigger stadium with greater

functionality. I am still working with

the City of Kingston on a potential

joint use agreement with a financial

commitment from Council for the

possible expansion of our stadium

from 1 to 2 courts. Sport and

Recreation officers have been

authorised to work with Mordialloc

College to scope and prepare a costed

stage 2 concept plan (addition of

second court sometime in the future),

to draft a joint use agreement and

develop a funding strategy. This is

then to be reported back to Kingston

Council to be voted upon.

Whole School

PD Day

August 12

The focus for our

PD day will be to continue the process

of curriculum documentation across

all learning areas to align with the

NEW Victorian Curriculum, along with

any new study designs for VCE. This

will include the development of unit

outlines following the updated

proforma so we are consistent across

all learning areas, the writing of new

subjects/electives, and development

of benchmark tasks and rubrics. We

will begin the day with a refocus on

High Expectations and Authentic

Relationships as part of our Curiosity

implementation and a review of

policies aligned to the new Child

Safety Standards.

Student PledgeStudent Pledge

“As students of Mordialloc College, we

are determined to achieve our personal

best, not only academically, but in sports,

the arts and in the wider community. We

will constantly strive to be the best we

can be. We will endeavour to take

responsibility for our actions, owning up

to mistakes and helping others out when

in need. We will be respectful towards all

teachers and students, and we will be

true to ourselves by being honest and

trustworthy.”

Whole School Review Update As mentioned in my last newsletter article the peer review

process is now completed over two days. Our review panel

includes Director of Ed Solutions, Jill Jackson, as the

external reviewer and Peter Corkill, Principal John Monash

Science School and Kerrie Dowsley, Principal St.Albans

Secondary College as our Challenge partners. Our first day

was last Friday, August 5, and included an initial discussion

with myself, Jill Jackson and Simon Hamilton, Senior

Advisor South Eastern Region. During Period 1 the panel

went on a tour of the school and classrooms to get a sense

of the school environment, student engagement and

alignment of teaching practice against our instructional

model. All panel members were very impressed with the

calm orderly environment and friendly atmosphere and

commented on this a number of times during the day.

They also remarked on the high engagement of our

students across a range of classes and year levels. The

majority of the day was spent in deep discussion about the

findings from our self-evaluation (including all the feedback

we received through the parent, student and staff forums

held during Term 1) and setting up the terms of reference

and agenda for our second day. The school was

congratulated for all the work that has been done over the

past 4-6 years and the feeling was that this has certainly

laid strong foundations for our next steps to becoming a

high performing school academically. Our second day is on

August 24 and will involve all members of the College

leadership team joining the review panel and we will go into

additional data analysis and discussion around a couple of

key identified focus areas. At the end of this day potential

goals, targets and key improvement strategies will be

drafted for the College community to consider for our new

Strategic Plan. Thanks to School Council President, Nicky

Hersey for her active involvement last Friday.

Child and Youth Directory

I encourage you all to take a look at the Child and Youth

Directory http://childandyouthdirectory.com.au/, a

rich resource of services available to young people, parents

and carers in our local

community. This community

resource provides information

on services covering the

cities of Bayside, Kingston,

Glen Eira, Port Phillip and

Stonnington.

Year 10 Advance class

r e c e n t l y

experienced an

amazing trip to Mount Buller to learn how to ski and

snowboard. This was, without a doubt, the best camp the

Advance class has gone on in the past year and a half!

This was our chance to learn how to ski or snowboard for

four days, with 19 other people, for a very reasonable

price. We left on a Tuesday morning and got back

that Friday night. On the first day we travelled four

and half hours and spent the rest of the day

settling in and tobogganing for a couple of

hours, which was a great experience. For the

following three days we did what we came for:

to ski and snowboard. We had a lesson every

morning for the next three days which obviously

helped us pick up the technique and improve

our skills each day.

As the week progressed we slowly got the hang of it and

were allowed to go on harder runs such as the ABOMM

Express, Shaky Knees and the Wombat. It was great to

see everyone gradually improve their skills over each day.

The food was also awesome and our night activities were

entertaining to say the least! We all had a great time,

and didn’t want to come home. Year 10 ski camp was

without a doubt one of the best things we have all ever

experienced. Thanks to Mrs Napolitano, Miss

Karamanis and Mrs Sheer for coming and

helping out and to Mr Evans for organising

everything.
