A MESSAGE FROM DINING SERVICES: Considering recent concerns regarding the salmonella outbreak and turkey, we can assure you that we only buy from reputable vendors with the highest supply chain standards. We will also ensure turkeys are handled properly and continue to monitor the situation as more information becomes available. WEIGHT WATCHERS AT COLLINGTON & NEARBY: With the holidays approaching, it may be the best time to have a new Weight Watchers group at Collington. If you're interested, please call Resident Jeannie Bessmer, x7283. Until we get the 15 people required by Weight Watchers to have a group at Collington, next Wednesday, November 21, Jeannie is planning to attend a nearby Weight Watchers meeting, about 15 minutes away. If someone wants to join her, just give her a call. Of course, this is an interim plan until we get 15 people for a permanent meeting at Collington. And Kim Rivers is back to help us make this a reality at Collington. Let's start the program with the holidays in mind. Happy Holidays.

Collington’s Strategic Journey

Quick Update on Health Services Alliance (HSA)

Activities

There has been a flurry of activity over the past few

weeks.  Here are a few of the highlights:

The HSA has created a Project Vision Statement.  This statement provides the core tenants that

will guide the design of the Creighton Center.  Open spaces, natural light, homey,

community…these are all items that will inform the work.

A new architect firm has been hired in order to better handle the

complexities of this project.  The new firm is SFCS Architects

(www.sfcs.com).  They have been in existence for over 75 years and focus

exclusively on designing spaces and environments for older adults and

they are well known for having a great deal of research to back up their

design ideas.

A design charette was held on 11/16/2018 with over 45 participants, most of them

residents.  The purpose of the charette was to have an initial conversation about the things

that are most important in re‐designing the health center.  Participants were asked

numerous questions and were able to “vote” in real time using a special “app” that

individuals utilized via smart phone, tablet or laptop.  One of the clear themes that came out

of the event:  Collington’s culture, sense of community, look and feel should exist

throughout all of Collington, including the Creighton Center.

A survey is being developed that will be distributed to all residents, staff and families of

Creighton Center residents.  The purpose is to expand the scope of feedback to more

stakeholders.  Be on the look out for that survey in the coming weeks.

Grateful and Giving Thanks Your new Resident Association Executive Committee has now been in existence for 6 weeks. And I am already grateful for many, many people. So, it seems appropriate at this time of year to publicly say Thanks. When Nadine Hathaway was approached to be 1st VP she was probably told she would just have to attend some meetings. Ha! Meetings aren’t the half of what she does. She has taken the bull by the horns and is tackling the tough problem of Housing Leaders as well as many other issues. Thank You! Sue Regen, our 2nd VP has more committees on her plate than she knows what to do with. My personal thanks goes to her though, for reminding me when my mouth gets ahead of me as well as reminding me to follow my heart. Thank you! Level headed Judy Collins, our secretary, knows our by-laws inside out and can write too. She is a great editor and bridge player and a close personal friend. Thank You! Our treasurer, Linda Ewald can always explain those many pesky little reports with the big numbers. And she is so easy to talk with and confide in. Thank You! I would be remiss if I did not mention management. I cannot thank them enough for their responsiveness to my thoughts, ideas, and concerns. We are definitely moving forward together and in the right direction. Thank You! Last but most importantly, my thanks to you, our residents - my friends, family and extended family. You have made me feel welcome and supported. But most importantly of all, you have spoken to me from your heart. Many Thanks from mine. Happy Thanksgiving!!!! Lois

CAMPUS-WIDE WATER SHUT-DOWN

Crews from Magnolia Plumbing are on-site and have begun work in

the 1000 and 2000 clusters, the back of the pool, the Clock Tower

and near the perimeter road by the Gate House. These areas will

be closed off to foot traffic as crews begin to dig and shore up holes

in preparation for the water shut down scheduled for Sunday, No-

vember 18th at 8 PM. This outage should last until approxi-

mately 4 AM Monday, November 19th. You will receive a broad-

cast voice mail message when the water is back on.

Leadership Team Members, Brenda Ables, Marvell Adams, Megan

Barbour, Dora Gray and Jerome Perry, will be on campus with extra

staff support from Facilities, Security, Nursing and Dining. Staff will

conduct hourly fire watch inspections throughout the community.

Plan accordingly to have extra water on hand for the flushing of toi-

lets and for drinking or bathing as needed. Common spaces

throughout the community (bathrooms) will have water available for

flushing and hand-washing.

As communicated in the November 9th Courier, this shut-down is

necessary to complete the final valve replacements for the main

water line.

Should you have questions during the water outage or require

assistance, please contact Security at x2020.

CULINARY SERVICES

ANNOUNCEMENT November 15, 2018

Dear Collington Residents, I write in follow-up to the announcement issued November 5, 2018.

I understand some residents did not receive the previous announcement.

We apologize. The following is the information from the previous

announcement regarding the transition of lunch in the dining room to

The Landing.

Since The Landing opened in the spring of 2018, there has been a

very significant decrease in the number of residents utilizing the main

dining room during the traditional lunch hours of 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.

Over the past few months we have seen service decrease from 50 to 30 to

15 residents that are having lunch daily in the main dining room. There

was some expectation of this decline once The Landing opened, but there

was no prediction of how many residents would “vote with their feet”. To

continue being good stewards of our community’s financial resources

and to provide a quality dining experience, the Culinary Services team

will discontinue lunch service in the main dining room Monday through

Saturday.

We will continue to provide full dinner service in the main dining

room from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm Monday through Saturday. Sunday

Page 21: Collington’s Weekly Courier · 2018-11-29 · 11/17 9AM Weed Warriors 11/17 3PM UMD Chamber of Music Concert 11/17 Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (Collington will not be providing

brunch service will remain unchanged in the main dining room during

the hours of 11:30 am to 3:00 pm. We will continue to accept lunch

reservations in the main dining room to accommodate large catered

lunch parties or special event requests. To make this transition to lunch

in The Landing only, we are also implementing the following

enhancements.

The Landing menu will include:

Popular menu items from the main dining room’s always

available menu.

Custom salad and sandwich options.

- The custom salad option will include popular ingredients from

the main dining room salad bar.

- The custom sandwich option will include items such as

chicken salad and wraps.

Options for a “classic” meal, an entrée with two (2) sides will now

be available.

For those who prefer it, we will incorporate a wait-service style in

The Landing during the busiest lunch hours of 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

The Culinary Team will be equipped with hand-held tablet devices that

will provide an opportunity for more efficient table side meal ordering

and potentially reduce waiting in line at the register.

This transition will be in full effect beginning December 3, 2018.

Thank you for your continued understanding and cooperation.

As many of you may noticed, there were multiple mistakes in last week’s Operating Committees Schedule. My apologies. And now a big thanks to Julia Freeman who straightened out the entire mess plus added the activity committees to the list as well. Please note that as of January 1st, we no longer have a chair of the Pet Committee. Pat Kirkham has worked diligently over the last year+ and I cannot thank her enough. This is an important administrative job. Records are kept for all pets on campus. There are two important reasons to keep these records. 1) If some event were to make a pet owner unable to care for their animal, it is imperative that we have information about a backup caretaker. 2) For dogs, we collect documentation of their rabies shots, important information for our own health and safety. The time is now to volunteer, we need one or perhaps two of you to step up to the plate, or shall I say the pet bowl, and chow down! Call x2214.
