NEW BOOK CLUB: Do you love reading excellent novels? If so, please join like-minded Collington friends in our new book club. Members of this club will read and discuss Winners and Runners-up (the shortlist) of the Man Booker Prize. Each month we will read one novel that was shortlisted for the Booker, and meet to discuss that book in the Blue Room. This club is modeled after a very stimulating book club in Ithaca, NY. During the past three years, members of that club enjoyed discussions of books by authors such as Hilary Mantel. Salman Rushdie, J M Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer, Arundhati Roy, Pat Barker, Martin Amis, Muriel Spark, A S Byatt, Colm Toibin, and many others. For a complete list of shortlisted and winning novels see: Booker Prize Winners and Shortlist in Wikipedia. At our first meeting, on December 8, we’ll discuss The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan (the prize winner in 2014). We invite both male and female readers to join us for discussions about this remarkable group of novels. For more information and to join the club, please contact Lee Miller, x7373 or [email protected]

HVAC UPDATE: Here is the look ahead for the heating loop project: Week of 11/9 – 11/20

Work continues in the Security wing (Pool to Creative Arts) ceilings, hanging pipe and hanger.

On Monday, November 23 at 5 PM, we will be doing a partial shutdown of the Security wing. We will have temporary heat for all the spaces if needed. This work will be done at night. Once this work is done, we will energize the pipes and that area of the project will be complete. We will then put all of the ceiling back together and clean up.

Week of 11/30

Work will begin in the Auditorium corridor and to the Clocktower. Should you have any specific questions or comments, please feel free to address them to Vernon Smith, x4791 or [email protected]. Thank you for your patience as we work on these many improvements for the future.

U.S. BOTANIC GARDEN IN WASHINGTON, DC: WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2; Departing Collington at 10AM.. Holiday cheer abounds at the U.S. Botanic Garden! Despite the cold winter outside, the Conservatory boasts a tropical paradise, one of the largest indoor decorated trees in Washington, D.C., and a showcase of poinsettias. It wouldn’t be the winter holiday season without the train display in the East Gallery, where trains chug along tracks around and above you through imaginative structures created with plant materials. Explore Pollination Station where you can visit oversized flowers, bees and butterflies in this year’s scenic wonderland. See D.C. landmarks such as the Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument, all made from plants, on display in the Garden Court. Come in from the cold and enjoy the sights, scents and sounds of Season’s Greenings. Please travel lightly, as the Conservatory is not equipped to store your personal items. You must keep strollers and all personal items with you at all times.
