HappinessThe Science of Happiness: What Makes Us Happy? Happiness has been in the
news quite a bit lately. The UN released a “Happiness Report” rating nearly 200
countries, which found that the world’s happiest people live in Northern Europe
(Denmark, Norway, Finland, and the Netherlands). The US ranked 11th. The report’s
conclusion affirmatively states that happiness has predictable causes and is correlated
specifically to various measures that governments can regulate and encourage. And
there’s more. A new AARP study looks at how Americans feel – and what factors
contribute to their sense of contentment. It concludes that nearly 50% of us are
“somewhat happy” and another 19% are “very happy.”

Friday, 10/9, 3:00 pm – Vitalize 360: Wheel of Life
Your Health Coach, Kim Rivers, will discuss what the “Wheel of Life” is and what the
benefits are to your well-being and living healthy.
Friday, 10/9, 4:00 pm – One Day Univ.: Brain Aging and What Can You Do About It
Aging is associated with subtle declines in some cognitive abilities, but not others. As we
age, we become a little more forgetful, we get distracted more easily, and we can’t
process information quite as quickly as we once did. At the same time, world
knowledge, emotional processing, and what’s sometimes called “wisdom” tend to
remain stable, or even improve, with age. Why is that?
In this talk, Professor Thad Polk, a leading researcher on the neuroscience of aging, will
address that question by explaining what happens to our brains as we age. In addition to
discussing specific brain regions whose function tends to decline with age, he’ll also
present evidence that our brains reorganize themselves in order to compensate for age-
related declines, so that we can continue to function as effectively as possible as we get
older. Finally, he’ll describe some scientifically verified approaches that can help you
and your brain age a little more gracefully.

- Different Walk, Same Reasons: Walk to End Alzheimer’s
“The world may look a little different right now, but one
thing hasn’t changed: The Alzheimer’s Association’s
commitment to ending Alzheimer’s. This year, Walk to End
Alzheimer’s® is everywhere — on every sidewalk, track and trail.
Your health and safety are top priorities. There will not be any large in-person
gatherings — instead, you’re invited to walk in small teams while others in your
community do the same. Because we are all still walking and fundraising for the same
thing: a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.”
Collington will hold a walk on Friday October 16th 10:00am to honor loved ones, past
and present with Alzheimer’s and other dementia. If you would like to register through
the Alzheimer’s Association you may by going to www.act.alz.org and clicking the Walk

MedStar Update: The MedStar Center for Successful Aging Outpatient Clinic at Collington team will provide a 972 broadcast update on Wednesday, October 7th at 4:30pm. On the broadcast we’ll talk about physician and nurse practitioner recruitment updates and COVID-19 testing within the clinic and updates to reaching the on-call providers after hours and on weekends. COVID-19 PANDEMIC UPDATE We continue to ensure appropriate infection control measures are in place. We would like to remind both residents and team members the need to ensure that masks are covering both your mouth and your nose to be most effective. Hand washing remains an important way to mitigate the spread of the virus as well as other germs and illnesses. Physical distancing of 6 feet is also an important way to protect yourself and others from the virus. Below is the most recent Collington COVID-19 dashboard.

FROM THE CHIEF OF FINANCE, Justin Reaves
Dear Collington Residents,
As you are aware, the BB&T Bank branch, located on Collington’s campus, closed at the
beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic for the safety of residents, team members, and
the BB&T employees. Since then, we’ve had numerous discussions with BB&T and sent a
letter on behalf of the Collington residents, communicating the need for banking
services. Unfortunately, BB&T is not comfortable opening the Collington branch in the
midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the safety of residents, team members, and the
BB&T employees the Collington BB&T branch will not open for the foreseeable future.
In partnership with BB&T, we developed a plan to provide transportation to the
Kettering BB&T branch, beginning Wednesday September 23, 2020. BB&T Kettering has
developed a plan to serve Collington residents on Wednesday afternoons each week.
During this time, Collingon residents will have access to BB&T Kettering and all its
banking services. See below for additional information.
-
15 Courier October 5-October 11,2020
For those residents who have safe deposit boxes, you can email Justin G. Reaves, CFO at
[email protected] to request access to your safe deposit box. Please
provide a date and time that works best for you at the time of your request. Once your
safe deposit box request is made, it can take up to one week for confirmation.
Below are instructions on how to schedule transportation to the Kettering BB&T branch.
Beginning September 23, 2020, trips to the BB&T Kettering will be every Wednesday,
leaving Collington at 1:00 pm.
To request a trip to the BB&T Kettering Branch:
1. Call Security at x2020. 2. Provide Security with your name and a brief description of your banking needs. 3. All requests need to be received by 9:00 am on Monday for the trip on
Wednesday. 4. The maximum number of residents who can be transported to BB&T Kettering is
4 and will be on a first come first serve basis. 5. Please arrive at the Security entrance by 12:45 pm on Wednesday so the bus can
leave promptly at 1:00 pm. We continue to work with BB&T on additional banking solutions to serve Collington’s
residents. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
