Happening this Week

Library news: Oct. 24th (Saturday) the library will be open from 10AM until noon to see how many residents will use the library if we decide to continue Saturdays.

The Fiscal Review Committee will meet Monday, October 25, at 2 PM in the auditorium.

Monday, October 25, 7:00 PM - Henry V (1989) color, 137 min., subtitled

Happy St. Crispin's Day! On this 616th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt, Monday

Night Movies is delighted to present Kenneth Branagh's magnificent version of

Shakespeare's Henry V which follows Henry as he invades France to reclaim lost lands. The

climax at the Battle of Agincourt on 25 October 1415 (St. Crispin's Day) is lavishly and

realistically recreated. Branagh directs and stars as King Henry along with Derek Jacobi (as

Chorus), Brian Blessed (as the Duke of Exeter), Ian Holm (as the Welshman Fluellen),

Richard Briers (as Bardolph), Paul Scofield (as Charles VI, King of France), Emma Thompson

(as Katherine, daughter of Charles VI), and Judi Dench (as an innkeeper). Branagh's speech

following the battle is breathtaking. The beauty of the English language here from the pen

of William Shakespeare and the voice of Kenneth Branagh has seldom been equaled. The

musical score by Patrick Doyle (who also leads the singing of the Te Deum) is superb.

Branagh was nominated for Best Actor and Best Director and Phyllis Dalton won the

Academy Award for Best Costume Design. Branagh won the British Academy Film Award

for Best Direction. Even though it doesn't follow Shakespeare's play completely, this film is

widely considered to be one of the best Shakespeare film adaptations ever made. Join us

for this cinematic treat and have a Halloween treat too.

Tuesday, October 26 – 10 AM: Episcopal Holy Eucharist. We welcome the Rev. Jocelyn Irving, Retired, Rector of Atonement Church, DC, as our guest celebrant and preacher.

Many analysts are predicting that Republicans will take back control of one or even both chambers of Congress. What makes them so sure of this outcome? What are some of the best political minds thinking currently about what will shape the outcomes in these all-important elections? There will be a Flower Committee meeting on Tuesday, October 26th at 4 pm in the

Game Room. Information about the holiday workshops. Hope to see you there.

are welcome. For optimal room set-up, please RSVP to Sara Case if you plan to

attend (X7355 or by email [email protected]) (Room arrangement: chairs

DO YOU KNOW?

November 15th is National Recycling Day. Each of us can get a head start on this day by doing some inventories of our own spaces and usage of certain things.

PLASTICS! - One of the worst environmental pollutants because only 20% of plastic items we put into the recycling stream actually gets recycled. Instead they go into landfills where they will rest for centuries while they slowly degrade. Or they eventually go into the oceans where photo-degradation breaks them down into micro-particles, which in turn pollute our entire ecosystem. Want to know more?

{ https://sosfuture.org/blogs/news/what-you-need-to-know-about-plastic-breakdown?gclid=CjwKCAjwk6-LBhBZEiwAOUUDpyc_acGKNh0bjfwl9m_DpIKw0Ze0RK82v1f8KskPEDjXUFNQk_DhYhoCnn4QAvD_BwE } What can each of us do? Reducing is the best because less plastic goes into the ecosystem. For instance, laundry detergent in plastic jugs is usually 90% water. Alternatively, there are concentrated dissolvable sheets and pods in paper packaging. Many stores carry these products and they are available online. Join neighbors who are already using these products with enthusiasm for their effectiveness and cost savings, as well as being environmentally wonderful. This week inventory your supply of plastic containers and begin to look for alternatives to purchase next time you need to replace these supplies. Share your ideas with us. OUTREACH COMMITTEE The Outreach Committee is collecting supplies for teachers to use at Cora Rice and Kettering Elementary Schools. These would be excess items that are in good shape, you might be trying to find a good home for and teachers could use during the school year. Please do not buy anything! We are hoping to gather: Pencils and Pens, Colored markers, Crayons and Highlighters Empty Binders, Portable File Holders and Files Paper clips and Binder clips, Staplers and staples, Scotch tape Paper pads, notebooks, loose leaf paper, construction paper, post-it notes, and composition books Pencil sharpeners - electric and manual If in doubt, please donate and we will find an appropriate home. There will be a labeled box/bin in the hallway opposite the Library, and next to the Food Pantry containers, for your generous donations. Thanks in advance for your help. Collington Maps in the Library

The Grounds Committee has collected a variety of maps which residents had acquired of

Collington and environs. Some of these show alternative proposals for new trails on the

parkland near Collington. We have made copies of many of these maps and placed them in

the Library for reference. A three-ring binder, as well as a set of larger rolled maps, are in

the bookcase below the window in the Archives Room. If you have additional maps of

Collington or the surrounding area which you are willing to donate or let us copy, please

contact Steve Woodbury at x7581.

The Employee Appreciation Fund is on!

The Resident Association only asks you for money once in the year, and we don’t ask for ourselves, but for those who take care of us. Because we are a non-tipping community, between now and the first week of December we are collecting money for our employees – those under the level of senior management – to show our appreciation for what they do to keep us safe, cared for and fed throughout the year.

Last year, our employees had the burden, fears and losses of covid to contend with; this year they are bearing the burden of almost every department being short-staffed, and of being overworked at a time when covid is still an issue. Despite the gaps in staffing, our staff have continued to be there for us, cheerful, caring, and part of the community in every way.

We are asking you to reward them with a check made out to the Collington Residents Association, with ‘for the EAF’ on the subject line. You can put the check in the box outside the RA Office opposite the Landing, or in the mail slots of any of the RA Executive: Howard Piggee (#2009), Mary Ann Curley (#2007), Ann Carlson (#1203), Sheena Macpherson (#4105), or me (#5108).

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

On behalf of the RA, Marian Fuchs, 10/22/2021

Calling Collington Creative Artists!

We invite you to begin thinking about your past accomplishments and creating new works of art. We hope to publish the next issue of Kaleidoscope in early Summer of 2022. Submissions are being accepted beginning now, and selection by the editorial board will occur during January and early February. Each contributor may submit a small number of either literary works or photos of visual arts. Writing The editorial policy for written contributions for Kaleidoscope requires that entries be of approximately 650 words or less. We hope you will search previous work, or create anew: a new awareness a turning point event an "A-HAH ! moment. Don't forget humor and hopeful expectation! As with the 2021 issue, we look for poetry, a short story, haiku, an occurrence described (rather than technical, journalistic, or scientific writing). Look for something written in earlier times, perhaps in your journal. Revisit it and bring it to new focus, possibly in light of something learned in this "new world of Collington." Please submit writing electronically to the following address: [email protected] The Arts We are again eager to have as many media represented as possible: photography, painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic, colored pencil, pen and ink); ceramics, fabric art (quilting, weaving, original needlepoint or rug hooking), basketry, or sculpture, digital art, and original music with a link. Please submit a snapshot taken by camera or cell phone to: [email protected] If you would like someone else to take the snapshot entry picture, please call Managing Editor, Ann Davie (x7325). The Kaleidoscope Editorial Board: Lois Brown, Nancy Brown, Ann Davie, Maja Keech, Marilyn Meek, George Newman, Ed Robbins, Susan Wolf
