Wood Shop: We will meet via Zoom on Monday, October 11th at 2 PM. Watch for the Zoom link on Sunday. Italian for Beginners (2000, released in 2002) Color, 112 min., subtitled Rotten Tomatoes describes this Danish film as "the story of six insecure singles whose lives interweave one dreary Copenhagen winter. Soon after arriving in a small grey suburb, Andreas (Anders W. Berthelsen), a young, sensitive minister who has just lost his wife, is persuaded to sign up for Italian lessons. Upon his arrival, each of the lonely characters: Jørgen who is in the midst of a crisis, clumsy baker Olympia, hairdresser Karen, and Giulia the Italian friend of Hal-Finn, the substitute Italian teacher, makes a major decision that will change the course of their life. They find love and a happy solution to their unhappy situations." Newsweek critic, David Ansen, wrote of this film, "Without abandoning the illusion of realism, Scherfig (Loni Scherfig, the director) and her wonderful cast slyly transmute the quotidian into the magical. It's like watching flowers bloom in a concrete garden." Italian for Beginners won the Jury Grand Prix Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. Tuesday, October 12 – 10 AM: Episcopal Holy Eucharist. We welcome the Rev. Shell Kimble, Rector of St. Barnabas' Church, Temple Hills, as our guest celebrant and preacher. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 10:00 am, Board Room - MaCCRA (Maryland Continuing Care Residents Association). Report on summer/fall activities. Planning for fall/winter general meeting. All residents are welcome.  Tuesday, 10/12, 4:00 pm – One Day University – Inside the Kremlin: Russia’s Past, Present, & Uncertain Future Russia is just the ninth most populous country in the world and has only the eleventh largest economy, yet its influence on the world stage is much larger than you would expect based on economic indicators. Touring the Kremlin’s history, from the Czars, to Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev and Gorbachev, to the modern democratic era of Yeltsin, Medvedev and Putin, we will grade the accuracy of Churchill’s take on Russia as “a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.” This session will examine why Russia has an outsized impact on geopolitical tectonics and how it exercises its power.

Wednesday * 13 October * 7:00PM * Auditorium Merritt Edner’s Neighbor Talk Features Prisons While Neighbor Talks generally feature residents’ hobbies, expertise and retirement pastimes, the October 13th session will explain something that looks a lot like another career. Merritt Edner took on the role of Prison Minister nearly from his first day in Collington. “Prison Ministries in Maryland” will unwrap this narrow venue in our own and nearby states along with a few others quite a way off. His talk will include anecdotes around prison staff, residents, and their clergy. A period of questions and answers will follow.

Caste by Isabel Wilkerson: Book Discussion Wed. Oct. 27, 3 PM in the auditorium.

The discussion will occur in two parts: first we will accept Wilkerson's premise that a caste system exists in the U.S. and will explore whether and how the notion of caste furthers our understanding and whether it creates a possibility of significant change. After that, we will turn to the question of whether we agree with Wilkerson that a caste system exists in the U.S. and why or why not. ALL are welcome. For optimal room set-up, please RSVP to Sara Case if you plan to attend (X7355 or by email [email protected]) (Room arrangement: chairs will be placed in a circle and we will have a runner to bring a microphone to those wanting to speak so we can all hear each other.)

The Indian Caste System:  Tuesday, November 2, 2:30 PM in the Game Room.

Wilkerson discusses what she calls caste in the US, in India and in Nazi Germany. For those who are interested in examining the Indian case in greater depth, Sipra Johnson will reprise an illustrated lecture on "Caste in India" that she has given during educational travel programs. ALL are welcome.
