Employee Commendations November

To Melvin Pittman: Last Friday morning our refrigerator stopped cooling, though the freezer continued to work. I called Lula, and she put in a work order and said she would speak with Melvin. I happened to see Melvin at lunch and spoke with him about the problem. We then had an errand to run off campus. By the time we returned Melvin had been here and the problem was fixed. On Monday morning he called to make sure all continued to be well. We very much appreciate how quickly Melvin responds when we have problems with our cottage, how pleasant he is when we see him, and how competent he is in doing his job. He is a real gem. We appreciate your whole team and how much better they make life at Collington.

Jim Holmes & Tim Sabin 10/17/2017

To Dwindle Robinson and Karen Cheney: Thank you both for your prompt response to my safety concern regarding the large dumpster blocking our access road.

Doris Walsh 10/17/2017

To Chris Ramsey, Stephanie Tolson and Taimi Ando: We just wanted to let you know that we stayed with friends at a CCRC (Homestead Village in Lancaster, Pennsylvania) last week and came away very thankful we are living at Collington. We may have occasional complaints and suggestions for improvement, but our dining room atmosphere, food, and service shine in comparison. Thank you for your continuing efforts to make Collington even better.

Lorrie and Jim Rogers 10/18/2017

To Ariel Graves, John Fofana and LaQuanda Williams: While having lunch with guests at table 40, we noticed that Charles Casto needed help. Ariel was nearby, heard him intuitively knew that he needed help and went to assist him. It was perfect and I told her as well as John. John of course, has been one of the best of our helpers since his arrival. He is gracious, polite, helpful, always efficient and in a good mood. He does a splendid job cutting out cakes. Ariel is new to me but has impressed me both Tuesday and last night when we had our monthly cluster dinner. She is another one to consider a real asset to the serving staff. I have one more young lady to recognize for going the extra step. I ordered a peanut

Page 13: Collington’s Weekly Courier€¦ · Courier 6 November 20– November 26, 2017 Times at its 2016 Salzburg Festival premiere as “inventive and audacious a major event,” The Exterminating

butter on wheat (no jelly) recently for lunch. I was told they do not make them because there is no peanut butter. LaQuanda, over hearing this, volunteered to make it for me. Using the small packets of peanut butter, she made it for me. I thought it was wonderful. That is what one calls going the extra mile to get things done. Big praise for caring enough and I want you to know how special they are.

Clarita Ricketts 10/17/2017

To Erainer Smith: Good Morning to all, I feel that I must say a word or two about our housekeeper, Erainer Smith. We have been fortunate to have the same person clean our cottage for the last three years. During that time we have found that she possesses a work ethic that you do not see very often any more. She is always on time, friendly, and concerned for our welfare and goes above and beyond to see that our cottage is clean. We consider her our friend and are always happy to see her smiling face at our door. I feel that she should be commended for her outstanding dedication to us and to all of the residents that she cares for.

Joyce and Carl Koch 10/19/2017

To Leroy Mayfield and Ebonie Cook: October is Disability Employment Awareness Month in Maryland. On Thursday 10/12/2017, the Prince George’s Provider Council hosted its Third Annual Employment Awards breakfast. Two of our culinary staff were given EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR awards, Leroy Mayfield through Melwood and Ebonie Cook through The Arc. Congratulations on your awards!

Corinne Pearce 11/01/2017

To Sharon Carr: We want to acknowledge how great it was working with Sharon. She explained the differences in any billing and answered all of our questions as it pertained to our transition between insurances. She even went above and beyond by calling and explaining the process to our daughter. She answered her questions, which gave her a peace of mind knowing we were in the right hands.

Rob and Sibyl Pierotti

To David Legerwood: Loss of independence is hard to deal with and this resident was upset about many things and had gotten out of control of her emotions. As is usual when this happens one thing is what we call ‘the final straw’. The ‘straw’ in this instance was the television remotes would not work and she could not see a program that meant a lot to her. An aide and I tried unsuccessful to work it out and things escalated into a really bad situation. David Legerwood was called to come and help. As I understand it IT work is not normally David’s area of responsibility. He came within about 5 minutes with a big smile on his face. With quiet persistence David worked away with that aggravating set of two remotes doing his best to get the TV on and functioning. Meanwhile the resident was still quite upset and it was making her almost sick as upset can easily do. After about 10 minutes suddenly not only was the TV turned on, he had found her favorite channel. The transformation of an angry, upset resident into a smiling, happy woman was amazing. I was so relieved to see the work he did and the happy results that his work had. I don’t think people in the maintenance staff have ANY idea how important their work is to residents. That day what David did for the resident was actually as healing as if he had

been a doctor. He turned anger into contentment and upset into joy. I wish I could explain it clearly enough for you to SEE what he did. It was both normal and totally amazing at the same time. Please be sure he knows how valuable he is to the community. I wish to thank him for his good work.

Nancy Lively

To Anthony Spears and William Mosby: All passengers wish to thank Anthony/William for outstanding service on FULL bus, groceries and equipment today....you can be very PROUD....sincerely,, Don Judge...self-appointed spokesman......

Donald Judge 11/01/2017

To Kyle Olsen: Thank you for stopping by yesterday to see if we were happy with the work that Ruppert did trimming the cedar behind our bedroom and the whole line of overgrown cedars by the side of our cottage that were encroaching on the walkway to the apartment building. Taking off the lowest 8 feet of branches was an excellent solution. We are indeed happy with it and appreciate your checking. It was great chatting with you and getting to know about some of your plans.

Jima and Lorrie Rogers 10/25/2017

To Karen Boyce, Wanda Smith, Dameon Day, and Christopher Watkins: I wanted to thank you for all the assistance you provided yesterday to a Kendal at Oberlin resident, Jocelyn Maurushat. Jocelyn was visiting with family in the DC area. While she was there, she received some news about her sister. Having such a great experience living at Kendal at Oberlin, Jocelyn turned to Collington for guidance with her situation. Jocelyn and her niece drove for 1.5 hours in DC traffic only to find that she was unable to come through the gates without an appointment. Jocelyn called me for help and that’s when the Collington staff stepped in. You were gracious in interrupting your tour to contact your social services staff. Chris, who works in security and was at the gatehouse was very helpful in making connections for us. The social workers drove out to gate to meet Jocelyn and escort her on to the property. They took the time to meet with her and discuss some of her options. Jocelyn returned today from Washington DC and stopped in the marketing office to express her gratitude. She said her meeting with the social workers was very productive. They provided many resources for the family to investigate. Jocelyn’s sister is one of her last remaining blood relatives and the family is working through ways to manage the news they received. Although it’s unlikely that Collington will be the right place for her sister, Jocelyn is grateful for what was done for her and her family. Please pass along this note of gratitude to Chris in security, the social workers and anyone else who played a role in making this all happen on such short, unannounced notice. Courier 15 November 20– November 26, 2017

Greetings. It saddens me to share the attached message from Sean Kelly, President & CEO of Kendal Corp. regarding the tragic fire at Barclay Friends, a Kendal affiliate in West Chester, PA. Investigations are being conducted so at this time there is little accurate information on the cause of the fire. In moments like these our hearts go out to those affected but we should be hopeful in that the entire Kendal Family is supporting Barclay Friends during this difficult time. As you might imagine, this type of crisis makes us think about our own fire and disaster preparedness. Our team conducts drills on every shift each month and our fire detection system provides us direct information on potential fires. Additionally, all staff receive mandatory fire safety training each year by professionals that have expertise in the field, many of which are former fire fighters. From time to time we publish in The Courier reminders regarding fire procedures. We will do this for next week’s Courier. I recognize that all of you are thinking about how you can be of help to Barclay Friends. The Kendal Corp. is coordinating what needs may exist and when that information is available I will share it with all of you. In the meantime, please keep Barclay Friends and all those impacted in your thoughts and prayers. Marvell Adams

A Message from Sean Kelly, President & CEO of Kendal Corp.

Tragic Fire at Barclay Friends

Dear Friends,

We are so, so sad to report that last night there was a tragic fire at Barclay Friends, a Kendal Affiliate in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Despite a swift, effective, and compassionate response by first responders, along with Barclay Friends staff and so many volunteers, the physical loss is devastating and the emotional toll, even more so.

In time, we’ll know more about what happened, what’s to be done going forward, and how we can all hold Barclay Friends and its people up through this devastation and into the future.

In the meantime, our first priorities include caring for the residents and their families during this immediate transition. Starting at the triage centers, Barclay Friends staff and its neighbors began doing everything within their power to ensure levels of continuity in care and compassion during the evacuation, knowing the suffering and fear that are part of such a catastrophe.

As the day and weekend goes on, residents from Barclay Friends now dispersed over many different communities in and around Chester County will rest, begin to heal, and commence with the longer range planning to support more permanent transitions as they may be needed. Kendal and Barclay Friends staff will do this work together with the residents and their families. Our teams, over time, will also be aided by the numbers of friends and colleagues from Pennsylvania and all over the United States who have reached out and want to help.

Again, our hearts go out to the residents, their families, the staff and their families at Barclay Friends. All of our thoughts and prayers will continue to be vital, as well as will the continuance of good work and outpouring of support that emerged last night and has sustained us through the morning hours.

As we know more we will be sure to deliver updates. In the meantime, we are heartbroken by what’s befallen Barclay Friends and uplifted by the caring and generosity that surrounds them and us.

Sincerely,

Sean Kelly Kendal President and CEO
