A MESSAGE FROM THE LIBRARY COMMITTEE: Last chance to "save a mystery" book! Beginning June 21 the books displayed in the Feature of the Month alley will be withdrawn. If you see a mystery you want kept in the mystery collection, sign it out now. MEDITATION AT COLLINGTON: “We put what we hear to heart and we do our best to put it into practice in our everyday life” Pema Chodron. There has been a meditation group at Collington for some time, so we thought we would reintroduce ourselves to new and longtime residents. There are many ancient traditions where meditation is a central part of their practice. The purposes include relaxation, deep listening, praying, becoming more spacious and resilient, and turning our individual life challenges into concern for the community and the world. We gather once a week in the chapel to let go of our concerns in a purposeful way. Our posture and breathing center us and focus us with an intention. Having individually chosen an intention for the hour, most of us want to clarify our thinking and let go of scattered thoughts and of our reactions that take us off course. We are alert and awake to our surroundings but focused internally. We let go of stray thoughts

Courier 11 June 19 –June 25, 2017

time and time again, returning to our breath. On various gatherings we use chanting, slow walking, repeating a sacred word, or an inspirational reading. We believe that it is a spiritual practice whatever you choose to believe. We are pleased to be gathered together in a meditative community. You are invited to join us every Fridas at 4 p.m. If you have questions, please contact Nadine Hathaway x4158 or Louise Lusignan x5077. TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE - "Get Connected Program": On June 29 at 3PM the Collington Technology Committee will hold a “Get Connected” event in the Auditorium. The focus will be to get residents “connected” by assisting them with purchasing a computer, understand how to use it, connecting to the internet and using email. We will present on computer laptops and other devices available for purchase. This program is for residents who are interested in buying a computer for the first time or interested in buying a new device. After this event residents will have time to purchase the device and then we will begin a series of introductory classes that cover how set up and use the devices, Windows 10, internet, and email. We will include recommendations about what and where to buy. SANDWICH MAKING: Sandwich making takes place twice a month in the Creative Arts Room. The sandwiches are delivered to the First United Methodist Church of Hyattsville, 6201 Belcrest Road, which has a soup kitchen and is open for lunch. Our sandwiches are not for luncheon but are to be taken home along with a piece of fruit and a cookie for supper. Join us next Friday to lend a helping hand!! LONG DISTANCE INFORMATION: Collington passes long distance charges incurred to residents. The charge for a long distance call inside the United States is $0.03 per minute. For calling in Maryland, there is not an available list of which areas are considered long distance when calling from Collington. The phone company bases whether or not the call is considered long distance based on mileage, the distance between Collington and the final destination of the call. You can determine whether or not a specific phone number is local or long distance using websites like localcallingfinder.com. Areas outside the country will be billed at different rates depending on the location. As an example, calling Canada costs $0.04 per minute. International long distance rates, by country, can be obtained from the Administration and Finance departments. Also note that using (411) information is not free and adds additional charges. It is now Collington’s policy to only bill residents with phone charges exceeding $5.00 per month.

Courier 16 June 19 –June 25, 2017

Greetings! Here is the updated information on staff response times in IL. This data was first reported on March 17, 2017 at the Community Meeting as a part of the Health Services Action Plan Tracking Tool shared previously. We will continue to report this information at the monthly Community Meetings for the next few months and ongoing in The Courier.

Security & Nurse Response Times in Minutes

March April May Average

Response Time - Security 5.70 4.0 7.0 5.56

Response Time - Nurse 9.60 4.0 10.0 7.87

These are response times as measured from the moment security receives a call/alert for assistance initiated by an IL resident. Both the security and nurse response times are measured from the same starting time. For instance, on average for the past 3 months security has arrived in 5.56 minutes and the nurse on average has arrived in 7.87 minutes (2.3 minutes after security arrived). This is down from the previous rolling average of 5.93 min for Security and 9.13 min for Nurse…so we are improving!!

In addition to response times, we are reporting data on frequency of calls made for assistance. They are categorized as Emergency or Non-Emergency. Emergency calls refer to any assistance that involves a need for medical attention or other emergency. Non-emergency calls include incidents like resident locked out, toilet clogged, appliance issues, etc. These types of calls do not include more routine things that are not a result of a resident asking for individual assistance. For example, residents that work in the OO Shop regularly ask security to open units to collect donated items…these types of calls are counted in this reported data.

Courier 17 June 19 –June 25, 2017

Calls to 911 are a subset of the overall number of emergency calls to security. For the month of May, security responded to 32 calls for emergency assistance and of those 32 times, 911 was called 8 times or approximately 1/4 of the time. The vast majority of calls for assistance are non-emergency situations.

Dear Collington Community:

We are continuing on this journey towards creating our new bistro, “The Landing”, as named by the Residents of Collington and we plan to open the new venue late fall. We will start to enter different phases of construction that may alter service or change our normal routines. One of these phases will start on Monday June 26th, 2017, with the closing of the main staircase between the 2nd and 3rd floor of the Creighton center. Unfortunately, this phase will last the duration of the project due to Prince George’s County regulations and the concern for the safety of our residents and staff.

This phase encompasses altering the entire infrastructure of the

stairwell itself and tearing down the walls that surround it. Though the process itself does not require 3-4 months to complete, once this work is started the area itself is declared an open construction zone. Prince George’s County will not allow “occupants” in a construction zone until the space in question has been inspected and approved for use.

During this phase, the elevators will be the primary form of transport between the 2nd and 3rd floors. The fire stair case, 3rd floor access across from RA Office, will still be accessible if desired and directional signs will be posted. We apologize ahead of time for the inconvenience to our residents, staff and visitors during this time, but we hope as a community The Landing will be worth every moment of your patience. Best regards,

Karen Boyce

Strategic Plan Development Update – June 16, 2017 A Stakeholder Briefing Created by Marvell Adams, Executive Director & Lizann Peyton, Strategic Planning Facilitator on behalf of the Board Strategic Planning Committee

Greetings Friends! As you are undoubtedly aware, back in 2016 Collington began a comprehensive and in depth process to develop a strategic plan. The Board of Directors implemented a vehicle to engage and solicit input and insights from multiple stakeholders. In continuing to provide communication on the progress of the plan development the Board Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) is sharing this Stakeholder Briefing to serve as a summary of activities thus far and information on next and final steps in the plan development. This briefing is a proverbial “tip of the iceberg” and in the coming weeks more substantive details we be released as the SPC continues its work.

There were three major phases of the plan development: Pre-Plan Development, Active Plan Development and Plan Drafting & Approval. We are currently wrapping up phase two as the work groups have submitted their plan recommendations to the SPC for consideration and review.

The task before the SPC now is to deliberate and begin determining the priorities and themes to be put into the draft plan. The output from the work groups was comprehensive and included not only strategic recommendations but in many cases, specific operational objectives that provide the components of an operational work plan that will accompany the final strategic plan. These two documents, the long term STRATEGIC PLAN and the operational short and longer term WORK PLAN are the final output of the process.

As the SPC reviews the recommendations of all of the groups and work over the next four weeks to distill them into a set of strategic priorities, several themes are coming to the surface.

HEALTH SERVICES DELIVERY

We see strong momentum for advancing our Health Services, Health Center Infrastructure and Fitness/Wellness programs. We know this is a central aspect of why residents come to Collington, and a critical element in the experience they have while they are here. It’s also what will attract new residents, as a new generation makes choices about where and how they want to live as they grow older. Some of the core needs we’ve been looking at include:

• Our facilities and physical infrastructure;

• Our health service delivery model with focus on prevention and community health and a staffing model that support that;

• Ways to diversify our health care approach by making sure that it is resident-driven and asset-driven and that we incorporate emerging technology as the field of health care evolves.

LEADERSHIP, COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP & IMPACT

Our occupancy growth alone puts us as a leader in the field and is complimented by the unique offerings we have in our resident and staff culture. We see ways that we can be even more influential in the communities around us and in the field of aging.

• This means bringing our expertise out to others, influencing policy and being a respected and powerful voice locally and nationally;

• We want to inspire innovation, and tap the expertise and innovations of others in the field. • There are many opportunities to create formal and informal partnerships with major

universities, medical centers and other mission driven organizations. This is one way that we can leverage the assets we have for even greater impact.

COMMUNITY CULTURE & ENGAGEMENT

Our spirit of community among residents, staff, board, families, and other stakeholders is one of the things that makes Collington very special, and the reason that many choose to live and work at Collington when they had other choices too. Building on that is central to our strategic plan. That means things such as:

• Celebrating and maintaining our unique culture in the midst of change • Being thoughtful and intentional in how we relate to each other – through listening,

communicating, trust, transparency and consensus • Engaging and leveraging the talents and skills of all members of the Collington community, both

internally and in the external world, and maximizing the intergenerational aspects of those experiences

STEWARDSHIP & SUSTAINABILITY

We are blessed with many resources, from the diversity of our residents and staff, to our improved financial strength and the wonderful natural environment that surrounds us. In our strategic planning process, we are looking at:

• How changes or improvements in our physical structure can align with programs and services, resident needs, and keep us attractive to a new generation that’s coming;

• How our financial model can continue to grow and diversify and ensure decades long stability; • How to develop and support our staff – so that they will want to choose Collington as the place

to work, and stay here, seeing opportunities for personal and professional growth – and make sure their experience of being part of a community is just as strong as it is for residents;

• How to become committed stewards of sustainability by reducing consumption of natural resources in addition to reusing and recycling the resources we do consume.

SERVING THE BROADER COMMUNITY

There are many in our community who don’t want to leave home or cannot afford to come to Collington. In our strategic planning process we have been exploring roles that Collington can play in the larger community outside our campus. Some of this might involve building on things we do already, and some might be innovative ideas that need further exploration.

• Formal partnerships could be very important in raising the impact we can have on the lives of those who are aging, bringing what Collington knows how to do better than others;

• There may be an opportunity to partner with other parts of the Kendal system, like Kendal at Home, learning from their experience and jointly exploring ways to serve Collington and potentially those beyond our campus;

• There are people who can’t afford to come to Collington, and there might be ways that we could serve more moderate- and low-income people in our community.

NEXT STEPS The final set of mile markers includes a Strategic Plan Stakeholder Summit to be held in August (final date and invitee list TBD). This will bring together all stakeholders that have had a hand in gathering research and making recommendations for the plan as well as others that can further add insights into the strategic themes of the final draft document before the plan is approved by the SPC and forwarded to Collington’s Board of Directors for review, discussion and approval.
