GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP,WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 7PM – 1st FLOOR MEETING ROOM: This meeting presents a brief summary of some ideas by the lady from the Wendt Center for Loss and Healing. Throughout life we will experience losses. Depending on our emotional attachment to the person or object lost, our grieving will be shorter or longer. And we will grieve. It is a normal, healthy, and expected process. We may have physical reactions, we may have cognitive challenges, and we will have emotional reactions. As we grieve we will need to take time to be alone to recover from shock. We also need to be in touch with trustworthy people with whom to share our experiences of grieving. A support group can be a safe place to share and connect with others in grief. YOO-HOO…..HOLIDAY BAZAAR?: The holiday bazaar is less than a month away and I have not heard from many people as to whether or not they want to participate, need a table (or more than one), will be contributing items to sell (e.g. baked goods and other food), and if anyone would like to volunteer to wo/man the tables. The Auditorium is reserved for Friday, 3 November from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM for the 2017 Holiday Bazaar. Tables will be set up by 9:00, so those dropping off food, etc. can do so between 9:00 and 10:00. Please let me know ASAP, if you have not done so already, if you are contributing items and if you will need a table (or two), so I can plan the layout and give the information to Dwindle and Charlene. And, if you told me in passing in a hallway, please tell me again. Many thanks to all. -Maja (I Live to Nag) Keech, [email protected], x7253, Cottage 2004 ATTENTION, BINGO PLAYERS: In the month of October BINGO will be played on Wednesday, October 18 at 7PM in the Game Room. ATTENTION RESIDENTS WITH LOW VISION: October 19 at 2PM in the Auditorium, the Health Services Committee will sponsor Metropolitan Washington Ear. People with little or no vision can be well-informed, entertained, and less isolated.

REMINDER: Empty green wine bottles are needed for a sale table at the Holiday Bazaar on November 3. Please call Pat King x7333 or leave them at the Clocktower desk. A MESSAGE FROM THE PET COMMITTEE: Collington is proud to say we are a dog friendly community. Here are a few dog walking tips to keep the positive doggie karma for everyone. Some dogs love other dogs and some dogs obviously do not. Some dogs like other people and some do not. This does not make them bad or not appropriate for the community. They need to adjust to their new home. When you are passing a dog or a stranger with your dog, always respect boundaries. Introducing dogs while they are on their leashes can be potentially hazardous. Even dogs that are well socialized and friendly can react differently when faced with space limitations and added frustration that leashes sometimes provide, especially when greeting another dog or stranger. Always give the dog passing some space unless you already know the dog. If you wish to stop and greet the dog, you must ask for permission from the owner. Don’t always assume they want to play, or want a treat. Most dogs are on a strict diet regimen. All of the dogs living at Collington have been approved by an animal behaviorist, but some may take more time to adjust. Be mindful of this. If a dog is new to the community, kindly give it space until it has resided here for more than 30 days and has had time to adjust to a new environment. Dog-sitting outside dogs that do not reside at Collington is not allowed as all dogs residing here must be approved to ensure safety for everyone living here at Collington. We do have an animal behaviorist who is available to work with your dog in your home, for a fee, at any time you feel the need. We want everyone to live happily ever after with their furry friends always.

Greetings. With the recent events in Las Vegas, several of you have asked what Collington’s policy on firearms is. We do have a policy which has been in place for many years but clearly is not widely known to residents; in particular, those residents who do not have a firearm. Here are the details of the policy: Criteria that residents must agree to and follow in order to possess a firearm on the premises of Collington Episcopal Life Care Community.

· Notify the Chief Executive Officer in writing of the existence of firearm(s). · The firearm and magazine are to be kept unloaded at all times. · Firearm(s) are to be stored within the resident’s living unit and kept in one

of three conditions. These conditions are: (a) a trigger lock is installed; (b) totally contained in a securely fastened case, or (c) firearm is disassembled.

· The firearm is not to be displayed in any common areas of the Community. · The firearm is kept in a securely fastened case while being transported

outside of the resident’s living unit and in common areas of the Community.

· Ammunition is not to be kept on Community property, including the resident’s living unit.

· Satisfy the requirements of all applicable federal, state, and local laws governing the possession and storage of firearms.

The privilege to possess a firearm on Community property may be taken away if:

· Resident fails to notify the Chief Executive Officer that they have a firearm. · A firearm is displayed within a common area of the Community. · Ammunition is stored on Community property. · A firearm is not being kept in one of three conditions. These conditions

are: (a) a trigger lock is installed; (b) totally contained in a securely fastened case, or (c) firearm is disassembled.

· The resident has a history of violent behavior or has made threatening comments while residing at the Community.

· The Medical Director deems that the resident has impaired judgment. There are a handful of residents who have firearms on campus and abide by this policy. If you have a firearm and have not communicated to Collington, please follow the guidelines above to immediately come into compliance. This policy information will also be added to the revision of the Resident Handbook being overseen by the RA. Thanks as always, Marvell
