THIS WEEKEND

PASSOVER CELEBRATION AT COLLINGTON, FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 5:20PM - AUDITORIUM: Collington’s Passover Celebration will be on the evening of Friday, March 30th, which is also Good Friday. All Collington residents are welcome to come. It is free for Collington residents (one meal credit), but $22 for each of their guests over the age of 13. To attend, you must have reserved a place and selected whether you want Salmon or Kosher Chicken before 4PM on Friday, March 23rd. Diners who failed to select a main course will be served salmon. MET OPERA, “COSI FAN TUTTE”: SATURDAY, MARCH 31, BOWIE, MD: Will depart from Security at 12PM and return to Collington around 5:15PM. The third and final collaboration between Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte is a fascinating paradox: a frothy comedy of manners with an intensely dark take on human nature; an old story (it has antecedents in Boccaccio, Shakespeare, and Cervantes, among others) with a startlingly modern tone and a beautiful score. “Così fan tutte” was only moderately successful at its premiere and remained just outside the standard repertoire for more than a century. Così still poses unique challenges and correspondingly unique rewards for the public today. Every possible expression of love—from the loftiest to the basest—is explored in this extraordinary opera.

THIS WEEK LIBRARY COMMITTEE MEETING, MONDAY, APRIL 2, 10AM – BOARD ROOM: Book selections will occur on April 10 at 10 AM in the RA office on the third floor. All are welcome to attend either or both meetings. Have you lost a glove or a necklace? Look on the bottom shelf of the white donation table where the lost items can be found. Speaking of

The plan is to walk the perimeter. Anyone interested can join us by waiting at the benches. -Jeanne Slawson, Linda Ewald, and Marilyn Meek EPISCOPAL SERVICE, TUESDAY, APRIL 3, 10AM – CHAPEL: Rev. Larry Harris, resident, officiates. TUESDAY AFTERNOON MOVIE: “Son of God,” 2013, PG-13 (2HR 50MIN), TUESDAY, APRIL 3, 1:30PM – ARBOR GREAT ROOM: In the Holy Land, the Roman occupation has produced a cauldron of oppression, anxiety and excessive taxes levied upon the Jewish people. Fearing the wrath of Roman governor Pontius Pilate (Greg Hicks), Jewish high priest Caiaphas (Adrian Schiller) tries to keep control of his people. That control is threatened when Jesus arrives in Jerusalem, performing miracles and spreading messages of love and

MET OPERA, “LUISA MILLER,” SATURDAY, APRIL 14, BOWIE, M.D.: Will depart from Security at 11:45AM and return to Collington around 5:15PM. Luisa Miller represents a transitional moment in Giuseppe Verdi’s unparalleled career. While reminiscent of the youthful vitality that had made Verdi an international sensation, the opera also looks forward to the dramaturgical discipline and sophistication of the composer’s middle period. The story centers on the bond between a father and his daughter as they stand together against a hostile world, and much of the dramatic and psychological acumen that would define the mature Verdi is already fully apparent in this earlier work. It is an opera very much like its title character—one that impresses with genuine virtues rather than superficial flashiness. TAKE 5! JAZZ, THURSDAY, APRIL 19, WASHINGTON, DC: Will depart from Security at 3:45PM and return to Collington around 7:45PM. Relax and Take 5! Stop by the Courtyard Café for refreshments. For added fun, borrow a board game to play during the concert. Trombonist Charles Funn leads his big band in a performance of material from the Duke Pearson Big Band, which made two studio recordings for Blue Note records. Duke Pearson, pianist, composer, and arranger, is best known for his work as both a leader and a sideman at Blue Note. Funn’s big band highlights the originality and agility of Pearson’s recordings by reinterpreting the unconventional pieces. B&O RAILROAD MUSEUM, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25, BALTIMORE, MD: Will depart from Security at 9:30AM; be back on the bus to return to Collington at 2:30PM. for seniors. No outside food or drink is permitted inside, but there is snack stand or if you want to bring your own snack to eat on the bus, please feel free to do so. MET OPERA, “CENDRILLON,” SATURDAY, APRIL 28, BOWIE, M.D.: Will depart from Security at 12PM and return to Collington around 4:30PM. “Glorious,” raved the New York Times when Joyce DiDonato sang the title role of Cendrillon at the Royal Opera in 2011. “Her performance was thoroughly enchanting.” Now, for the first time ever, Massenet’s sumptuous take on the Cinderella story comes to the Met, with DiDonato starring in the title role. She is paired with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of Prince Charming, Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother, and Stephanie Blythe as the imperious Madame de la Haltière. Bertrand de Billy conducts Laurent Pelly’s imaginative storybook production.

Greetings Friends. It seems as if my communications to the Collington Family have been rather self-serving the past few months in that I’ve taken the opportunity each time to update you on my family. I won’t break that pattern this time!

First of all, thank you so much for your patience and understanding. It has been a difficult time for our family as our daughter, Quinn, has worked to grow and be well enough to come home from the hospital after being born on February 9th.

Well, that time for a homecoming is finally here. Quinn will be coming home next week. As such I will take a proper paternity leave for about 3 weeks but there are a few meetings and commitments I will still attend to as best I can during April.

As I shared with the Leadership Team this morning, there is nothing before Collington that isn’t made right by utilizing the skills and talents of our staff, residents and board members. So now more than ever I implore you to turn to one another and not ask for what you need but instead ask what your friends, neighbors and colleagues need from you.

During my leave, the leadership team will continue to function as a collaborative group in order to best serve all community needs. As an additional resource, Judy Braun, COO of Kendal Corp, will be making herself available to assist in any way possible. As some of you may already know, Judy is retiring in June and so her visits to Collington during April will be rather bittersweet. Please make sure to thank her for her service when you see her.

Thanks again for your understanding and well wishes. Have a Happy Easter.

All the best,

Marvell
