CollingtonPresents is a new series featuring a variety of interesting and talented Collington residents, produced by Lois Brown and Heather Huyck and airing on Saturday afternoons at 3 on channel 972. The full list of participants, dates and times, is available on the poster in the Clocktower. The series is also being shared with other Kendal affiliates. The first program will feature George (better known as Bud) Gardiner, a retired psychiatrist and internist, talking about Living in Peculiar Times: Covid-19. He will share some thoughts about how we're doing after 6 months and what more we might do to keep happy and healthy. Tune in to channel 972 Saturday, Oct. 10, at 3 pm. Don't miss it!

In the final installment of Cello Century, we listen to “Notes on Light,” a cello concerto

by contemporary Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. Learn how she uses a spectrograph

to translate the physical properties of sound waves into musical ideas, and hear an

orchestra imitating a solar eclipse in her imaginative, mesmerizing cello concerto.

In the first, of a three part series, Artist in Residence Tonya Burton will perform J.S.

Bach, Cello Suite No. 1 alongside Max Reger's Suite for Solo Viola No. 1. Max Reger

(1873-1916) was an avid admirer of J.S. Bach (1685-1759) and while their music differs

in its inherent reflection of its place history, their similarities make a lovely pairing.

FOOD DONATIONS: Thank you all for your food donations (particularly the soup and

fresh fruit), which were delivered last Wednesday! The food bank volunteers were very

grateful and said that these donations are very important right now. We also delivered

lots of brown paper bags which were helpful as well. We’ll watch the baskets for the

If the book is a recent publication and a duplicate, we will keep it aside for the November Bazaar which is our fund raiser for the Residents Association.

NURSERY SALE WAS A SUCCESS- All of Collington’s wonderful resident volunteers and staff again helped to make an outdoor event an exciting success. Special thanks to Amy S, Annette F, Carol E, Charlie C, Denise B, Don L, Jeanne S, Jessica M, Joan L, Joyce G, Marianne M, Mary, K, Maya R, Marilyn M, Mike McC, Sara C and Steve W who not only offered their time, wagons and plant expertise but their muscle in helping neighbors get their products home. Holiday Bazaar

Although I have not heard from many people, let us hope that the annual Holiday

Bazaar will take place this year, allowing for Covid-19 restrictions. The Administration

has told me to go ahead and prepare for it. The 2020 Holiday Bazaar will take place on

Friday, November 13th, 2020, from 10:00 until 2:00. Please let me know if you, or

others you know, would like to make items for the Bazaar (crafts, food, etc.) or

Clock Tower Help! Looking for back-up assistance to help with sorting, logging-in and

handing out packages. We are heading in to our busy holiday season (though with

COVID, it seems like we’ve been in it!) and the number of packages will increase as we

get closer to the end of the year. Just this past Friday, we took it 80 packages in one

day! If you are willing to help for an hour or two during the weekday or help with 4-

We continue to ensure appropriate infection control measures are in place. We would

like to remind both residents and team members the need to ensure that masks are

covering both your mouth and your nose to be most effective. Hand washing remains an

important way to mitigate the spread of the virus as well as other germs and illnesses.

MedStar Center for Successful Aging On- Call Practitioner number changed to 301-570-

7363

To increase ease of communication and accessibility to reach practitioners after hours

and on the weekends, MedStar Center for Successful Aging Outpatient Clinic at

Collington now has a direct phone line number to reach the on-call practitioners.

Residents who need to reach a practitioner outside of the regular clinic scheduled hours

may now dial 301-570-7363 directly. Regular clinic hours remain Monday through Friday

8:30am to 4:30pm. Residents may still call the clinic after hours and on the weekends to

hear this number on the clinic voicemail also.

FROM THE CHIEF OF FINANCE, Justin Reaves

Dear Collington Residents,

As you are aware, the BB&T Bank branch, located on Collington’s campus, closed at the

beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic for the safety of residents, team members, and

the BB&T employees. Since then, we’ve had numerous discussions with BB&T and sent a

letter on behalf of the Collington residents, communicating the need for banking

services. Unfortunately, BB&T is not comfortable opening the Collington branch in the

midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the safety of residents, team members, and the

BB&T employees the Collington BB&T branch will not open for the foreseeable future.

In partnership with BB&T, we developed a plan to provide transportation to the

Kettering BB&T branch, beginning Wednesday October 14th, 2020. BB&T Kettering has

developed a plan to serve Collington residents on Wednesday afternoons each week.

During this time, Collingon residents will have access to BB&T Kettering and all its

banking services. See below for additional information.

For those residents who have safe deposit boxes, you can email Justin G. Reaves, CFO at

jreaves@collington.kendal.org to request access to your safe deposit box. Please

provide a date and time that works best for you at the time of your request. Once your

safe deposit box request is made, it can take up to one week for confirmation.

Below are instructions on how to schedule transportation to the Kettering BB&T branch.

Beginning October 14th, 2020, trips to the BB&T Kettering will be every Wednesday,

leaving Collington at 1:00 pm.

To request a trip to the BB&T Kettering Branch:

1. Call Security at x2020. 2. Provide Security with your name and a brief description of your banking needs. 3. All requests need to be received by 9:00 am on Monday for the trip on

Wednesday. 4. The maximum number of residents who can be transported to BB&T Kettering is

4 and will be on a first come first serve basis. 5. Please arrive at the Security entrance by 12:45 pm on Wednesday so the bus can

leave promptly at 1:00 pm. We continue to work with BB&T on additional banking solutions to serve Collington’s

residents. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Employee Appreciation Fund

Dear fellow residents:

Throughout the covid months of 2020 we’ve been thanking our staff in all departments for working hard and consistently to keep

us fed, protected, entertained and safe. Now is the time for putting our appreciation in the form of an end-of-year financial

program that the RA calls the Employee Appreciation Fund.

Since we are a non-tipping community, this is your only chance

to make a financial thank-you. So please express your gratitude in the form of a tax-deductible check to the Fund, which will

receive donations until December 4, after which individual checks will be made out to employees in time for the holidays.

Contributions may be put in the locked black box outside the Residents Association office across from the Landing. Make your

check out to the Collington Residents Association with a note on the bottom “for EAF.”

No amount is too small or large, but we hope you will be at least

as generous as in previous years. Some of us may have a little

extra in our accounts from the travel plans we had to cancel because of covid – this would be a fine way of having that money

find a good new home.

I’ll be reminding you about the Fund regularly between now and early December. Until then, be thinking of how much you can

spare, and how happy the recipients will be.

Voting in the November 2020 Election

Absentee (mail-in) ballots

The Board of Elections (BOE) is mailing out absentee ballots to those who have applied for them. Since ballots are mailed out in batches, they are trickling in and not everyone is receiving them at once. Each day, a few more arrive.

You may mail back your voted ballot or drop it off in an official drop-off box. Those boxes are under 24-hour surveillance and are emptied by election officials at least twice a day. The closest box to Collington is outside the Board of Elections office at 1100 Mercantile Lane, Suite 115A. It will be available through election day, Nov. 3rd.

If you don’t wish to use the mail and don’t drive, you may give your voted ballot to Vern in the clocktower. In order to preserve the integrity of the process, it is important that we maintain a log of ballots received. Please hand the ballot directly to Vern – do NOT just leave it on her desk if she is at lunch or away from her desk. She will log in your ballot. Periodically, a MaCCRA volunteer is picking up the ballots from Vern, signing the bottom of the log, and dropping them off at the drop box by the BOE.

If you haven't applied for an absentee ballot, you won't be sent one. Many Collingtonians have already applied online or mailed in their applications. If you want to vote by absentee ballot and you have not yet applied and you don't have the application that the Board mailed to you, call Lorrie (x7371) and she will put an application form in your slot.

You can check the status of your application or ballot online. If you are not comfortable using a computer to do this check, you may call Lorrie (x7371) and she will check for you. https://voterservices.elections.maryland.gov/VoterSearch. Key in your name, birth date, and zip code, and click Search. The resulting screen shows your registration info. Scroll down and click Status of my Mailed-in or Provisional Ballots. If you have not applied or they have not received your application, it will say "There is currently no mailed-in ballot status to display." If they have received your application, as it goes through the process, it will show "Application Received", then "Application Processed", then "Ballot Sent", then "Ballot Received", and finally "Accepted" or "Rejected".

The PGC Board of Elections will begin counting absentee ballots on Oct. 13th, continuing through the 27th or 28th. Results will be included in the count released on Election night. Ballots received after that will be counted after Election day and included in the final certified count.

Voting in Person

Early voting is from Monday, Oct. 26th through Monday, Nov. 2nd. The closest Early Voting Centers to Collington are the Wayne K. Curry Sports and Learning Center, 8001 Sheriff Rd, Landover, 20785 and Bowie Gymnasium, 4100 Northview Dr., Bowie, 20716

Election day voting is Tuesday, Nov. 3rd. We can vote at our usual precinct, Charles H. Flowers High School, 10001 Ardwick Ardmore Rd or at any Early Voting Center (see above).
