The Weekly Courier October 28th – November 3rd
THIS WEEKEND
WEED WARRIORS: SATURDAY 9:00 AM: Because of the uncertainty of the weather, we will make a decision as to where to work this Thursday evening at our potluck. Once a decision is made, we will send an email notifying those not present. Hope to see you at one or both places! Sunday Afternoon Recital: Our performer this week needs no introduction to Collington. He lives here!! Peter Basquin may live in a retirement community, but he is not totally retired from playing and teaching. Peter has performed all over the world as well as in the U.S. Currently, you will find him and his wife, Katie summering in Maine as Peter teaches and performs at the Bowdoin International Music Festival. Come to the Auditorium on Sunday at 3:00 and enjoy a wonderful piano recital by "one of our own."

To: 2019 Holiday Bazaar Sellers, Donators and Volunteers: From: Maja Keech, #2004,. x7253, cell 301-602-2062, [email protected] The Holiday Bazaar will be in the Auditorium on Friday 22 November from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM. (or until you sell out) for the 2019 Holiday Bazaar. Facilities will have the tables set up by 9:00, so those dropping off food, etc., and those using tables can start between 9:00 and 10:00. Reminders for those with tables: Cash: Every table and every individual handle money and are responsible for obtaining change beforehand. Cashless customers can write checks to the “Collington Residents Association” if the entire purchase price is going to the RA. Remember to retain the amount of change with which you started. Supplies: In addition to change, I suggest you bring a box for cash, paper, pen, bags (if you have/need them), a calculator, stickers for prices if your items are not already priced, lunch (if you don’t have someone to spell you) and water. Help: If you have a table, get volunteers to help, if possible. The bazaar closes at 2:00 or when everything is sold, whichever comes first. Some tables will probably sell out sooner than others. (Food goes fast.) Proceeds: I can collect the money and checks at the bazaar. If you like, you may retain the cost of materials for yourself or your committee. And, don’t forget to retain the amount of change with which you started. Count your proceeds, mark the amount on the supplied envelope, and give the envelope, with the proceeds inside, to me. RA Treasurer Ann Carlson will receive the total proceeds at the end of the Bazaar. Set-up: Facilities and Housekeeping should have tables with cloths & chairs set up by 9:00 AM so you can begin your table(s) set-up then. The bazaar begins at 10:00 AM. Volunteers: Volunteers have or will be assigned to help at a table or be a “floater.” Please let me know what time you prefer. I’ve probably forgotten something or someone. Questions, suggestions or if you are not participating, please contact me (see above).

This week deer management is scheduled for all day Friday and Saturday. Residents may see the bow-hunters on campus on the way in and out of the woods. Residents are asked to stay within 50 yards of the trails.
Clinic Elevator: The elevator nearest to the clinic is out of order. Repairs to the elevator will commence on Tuesday October 29th. The elevator should be fully functional after Tuesday October 29th. Signage will remain on the elevator until it is functioning properly.
Round Two (and Three) Scheduled Power Outages: The Automatic Transfer Switches are in and Alban Cat will be here to install the first two switches on Wednesday, October 30th. This scheduled power outage will mirror the power outage we had on September 27. The outage is scheduled to occur at 8:30 AM and could last up to four hours. The details are as follows:
Independent living residents’ homes will keep their power.
The power and phone service may be out in the following areas:
The entire Creighton Center, including elevators and hallways
The Landing Main Dining Room Culinary Offices
Bank Salon Fitness Pool Laundry Security
Here’s what we’re doing to cover the community during the down time:
In the unlikely event that the ATS fails before we start repairs, team members will be staying overnight tonight and will have the emergency response communication roster and procedures.
Team members will be assigned stations throughout the entire community for fire watch, etc.
Additional team members will be scheduled for fire watch, assisting residents, serving as “runners.”
Courier 19 Oct 28th‐ Nov 3rd ,2019
Residents in the health center will have breakfast prior to the outage and will be served in their rooms.
Portable generators will be in place as back up for those who rely on oxygen in the health center.
Temporary lighting will be placed in the stairwells in and around Creighton Center.
Here’s what you can do to help:
Keep your cell phone fully charged, turned on and with you during this hour.
THE SARA SYSTEM WILL NOT WORK anywhere on campus, so check in with your neighbors. In the event of a true emergency in independent living, dial “911” on your cell phone.
If you are in the apartments, cottages, etc., and have power, please limit your visits to the areas without power.
Auditorium Seating for Handicapped
The Auditorium Support Committee has been concerned with inconsistent seating arrangements, aisle blockage and possible code violations in our auditorium. CEO Ann Gillespie formed a leadership team to deal with the numerous issues involved including what to do with wheelchairs, scooters and rollators. Facilities Director Jerome Perry has prepared code compliant alternate seating plans for a wide variety of uses that also comply with the American Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations. The committee reviewed these plans on Monday September 24 and agreed that while some plan alternatives may not be suitable for Collington resident events, all should be available to those planning auditorium events, some of which are rentals by outside users.
Eight spaces must be made available for persons in wheelchairs and scooters and these spaces must be larger than ordinary chair spaces. Also, neighboring chairs need to be available for able companions of persons in wheelchairs. Wheelchair spaces will be immediately apparent by the missing chairs in various rows – front, back and center. Further identification of these spaces will be coming soon.
Courier 20 Oct 28th‐ Nov 3rd ,2019
There are four designated fire exits. These are the two main doors from the Courtyard hallway plus the two rear doors, one to the hallway and the other on the opposite side to the loading dock. Electric door openers have now been installed on the back doors. Next time you’re in the auditorium, look around for these four exits.
More seating information to follow in future Courier issues.

FYI
EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DRIVE:
Many residents are inquiring about how much to give to show our appreciation for our staff. This of course depends on per-sonal circumstances. What can be shared is the results of the 2018 drive. Last year you generously gave $275,000 to pro-vide individual checks to 280 staff who care for us.
Also please remember there may be tax advantages for your generosity. The Residents Association is a 501(c)3, a not-for—profit organization. You can also consider using part of your required minimum distribution (RMD) from your IRA or retire-ment plan account. You can avoid paying tax on that portion of your RMD if you have the check made out to Collington Resi-dents Association for the EAF. Contact the custodian of your IRA or look up Required Minimum Distribution on the IRS web-site (irs.gov) for more information.
You may make your donation by check made out to the Resi-dents Association (memo line to the Employee Appreciation Fund) and place your envelope in the black box next to the door of the RA office. We are located on the third floor just past The Landing. Have questions? Ask your RA officers - Lois Brown, Sue Regen, Judy Collins or Ann Carlson. Thank you and please be generous!
Don’t forget to bring your youngsters to this Saturday’s Halloween Party from 2-4pm. Dress yourself up if you like. Fun for all!
Brought to you by the Collington Foundation - the first of 4 Drumming Circles facilitated by Katy Gaughan, this Mon-day from 1-2pm in the Auditorium. Instruments provided - no talent necessary (believe me I know)! Just plain fun.
A gentle reminder, as noted in the RA Handbook - Clock-tower Parking is for use only by residents and guests while on business in the Community Center. Not for long term parking or as a substitute for residential parking spa-ces. Overnight parking is prohibited. Please be considerate of your neighbors who need to park for events, meals, meetings, and other business
Orientation to the Residents Association - On Tuesday, October 29th there will be an orientation at 4pm in Class-room A. We will be discussing what the RA does for you, how you can get your questions and concerns answered and how you can participate, if you wish. Anyone is free to come and new residents are particularly encouraged to meet your officers.
Be well, be happy. Lois Brown, RA President
TELEPHONE DIRECTORY SUPPLEMENT KEEP THIS PAGE! It has the latest new or corrected information that came in after the JULY 2019 edition of our Telephone Directory was printed, so that we can contact even our newest residents. This supplement is a cumulative list of changes since JULY 1, 2019. Each month, remove the old supplement and attach this new one to your JULY 2019 Telephone Directory, until the next full Directory is issued.
PLEASE CHECK YOUR OWN INFORMATION, and send corrections or changes to [email protected], or call Charlotte Melichar at 7224 to add your change
to the Supplement. Your corrections and changes will be included in the next Telephone Directory.
All these phone numbers are in area code 301, except when otherwise shown. When dialing from one Collington phone to another, only the last four digits are required.
