Greetings, Friends! Many of you are so kind to write thoughtful letters and notes to staff about the wonderful things they do every day at Collington. You may not know this, but each letter/note is turned into a commendation for the staff member and is presented to them by their manager and read to the employee at the employee monthly meeting. Recently Pat Howard had an opportunity to witness our commendation portion of the monthly meeting, later Pat and I discussed how these could be shared with the wider community. So, in carrying out that goal, we will feature the commendations provided to staff, in the Courier each month. Marvell To Arnold Edwards, Christopher Jones, Jeannine Petty: A week ago Marion and I noticed water under the floor boards in the hall leading to the garage door. We looked about for an obvious cause (washing machine, etc.), and late in the afternoon, realizing we had a problem, called Security to report a flood. Jeannine came by and then called the “on-call” person, who was Arnold. He came by and in a quick tour of the villa, including a peek in the attic, noticed water coming out around one of the grills for the HVAC system near the floor, which we had not seen. He concluded that the problem was in the piping for the small bathroom. He cut into the drywall and located the leak up by the ceiling. Amazingly, during installation of the crown molding (July 2016), the carpenter had run a nail through the supply pipe to the toilet, and it took one year for the nail to rust loose, or be jiggled by the ongoing construction or the installation of the upgraded internet system via the attic! Arnold contacted Gene and then Chris, who came by and repaired the pipe, so that by 9 PM, we had water again, and could finish up the drying. Happily, no damage was done to the floor, or the small sections of rug that had been moistened. Victor’s crew came by on Friday, as scheduled, and completed the patching and painting. No sign of the holes in the drywall, etc.! We are most grateful for the response of "the system." We never believed it would be resolved the same day! We hope that you can pass on our thanks to Jeannine, Arnold and Chris. Edward Robins 9/13/2017 To Melvin Pittman: We wish to commend the gentleman who helps us maintain our villa — from the refrigerator to the shower drain to the handle on the clothes dryer. He calls to find out when he can come and he comes back if we aren’t ready when we said we would be. He is thoughtful and careful when he is in our home. He always cleans any mess that might have been made. We are fortunate to have Melvin work in our home. Jane Engle and Ken Burton 9/27/2017 To Melvin Pittman: Since my move to Collington last year, Melvin has made my transition here easier in many ways. I have always been able to depend on him to do an excellent job when my cottage required a repair. He follows through, remembers what needs to be done, and is careful when he’s in

my cottage. Among the many changes he has made for my cottage are these: replaced two torn window screens, plunged the toilet many times, replaced the toilet, and he made my sliding closet door in the sunroom work better. Frankly, the positive changes he made are too numerous to remember! Jeannie Block Bessmer 9/14/2017 To Melvin Pittman: Melvin does such a great job. Always knows how to fix the little annoyances that go wrong, excellent work. Thank you! Vena Darling 9/28/2017 To Melvin Pittman, Erainer Smith, Vern Rious: You have so many great employees here but I would like to praise three with all my heart as they stand out in my life here at Collington. Melvin Pittman -Always ready to help, always finds and fixes the problem and does it with graciousness. Erainer Smith -No matter how many houses (I’m the last one of her busy day), she is kind and helpful and cheerful. Vern Rious -The best person could have tending the front desk, a wonderful human being. Zora Hesse 10/5/2017 To Erainer Smith: We are both delighted that Erainer is our house-keeper. She has been coming to us for over two years and has consistently been: conscience with her work, considerate with her clients, always extremely pleasant, an excellent cleaner, never hesitated to do (within reason) something extra, always phones prior to arriving, always phones to ask, if it is alright with me, if she needs to re-schedule the hour for the day she is coming and most importantly, shows that she cares about her clients! Mr. and Mrs. Gimbrere 10/5/2017 To Emmanuel Omari, Irv Duff: Emmanuel and Irv did such a good job cleaning the flower room floor on Sunday. Thank you very much for helping to get this done. The effort was above and beyond what I expected. Please let Emmanuel and Irv know how much I appreciate his hard work. Pat Duggan 10/6/2017 To Beverly Dawkins, Linwood Simmons: The Maryland NADONA (National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration—LTC) Annual Award Breakfast to honor outstanding nursing assistants was held Tuesday October 4, 2017 at the Double Tree Hotel in Columbia, MD. Two of our nursing assistants were nominated for the Compassion in Caring Award. They both won the award and received it at the ceremony. The two nursing assistants are Linwood Simmons and Beverly Dawkins. Michelle McKenzie and I attended the ceremony. We both presented a short discussion about Collington, read the nomination descriptions and presented the awards to our staff (Linwood was unable to attend the ceremony, but Beverly did). Sharon Odumodu 10/6/2017 To Karen Boyce: Thank you so much for facilitating my seeing “In The Heights” at the Olney Theatre. The bus left without me due to a printed departure time discrepancy, although I missed the first 45 minutes, the performance was absolutely superior, creating an outstanding afternoon. The returning busload raved about it.

Peg Morrill 9/26/2017 To Gene Davis, Christopher Jones: I woke up on Tuesday morning at 5a.m. ---- so early, so very lucky as it turned out -- to find my kitchen, my hallway and part of my living room wall to wall carpet covered in water. Long story short, staff were ready to help, and I'm grateful. I wanted, however to especially mention how very helpful Gene and Chris were. They listened attentively to my concerns and are seeing to a resolution. Talking with them showed me their willingness to correct this issue and I am impressed with both their knowledge and professionalism. Thank you, Gene and Chris. Joann Harvard 10/4/2017 To Debra Ford: Just wanted to say how much I appreciate Debra cleaning our offices it is the best we have ever had. Pam Johnson 9/12/2017
