BEADERS GROUP: The Beading group that meets in the Creative Arts Room on Monday mornings is on hiatus until further notice. MISSING: An antique plate that reads "Votes for Women" is missing. It was a part of the Women's Month display in the Clocktower. It is a white, 8" in diameter plate with blue lettering. If you see it or know where it may be, please call Jeannie Bessmer at 301-706-7060 or at x7283. It's very dear to me because before she died, my Mother gave it to me and her mother was a suffragette in Missouri. Thank you. SKYPE TECHNOLOGY TRAINING & DEMO AT THE NEXT TECHNOLOGY MEETING: We will be trying a new, hopefully more helpful format for the Technology Committee meetings. The first part of the meeting, starting at 9:30, on Thursday May 11, in the Board

Room, will be a short business meeting. Then around 10AM, we will shift gears to a training and demo on Skype video conferencing. As you know, Skype allows free video calls between pretty much any devices on the Internet. (You can pay for calls to traditional phones.) It works with pretty much all operating systems. Feel free to bring a portable unit, and we may be able to try to get your account set up — subject to our availability. Your grandchildren will love you for it. We are thinking of doing a different training each month. We are starting with Skype because the survey, which lots of people answered, showed the highest demand for this training. A NIGHT IN SPAIN: Invitations to the May 19th spring fundraiser benefiting the Collington Foundation are being placed in your message slot this weekend. The event, from 5-7 PM promises wonderful food, a silent auction, and a demonstration of a Spanish dance and flamenco. Response cards may be left at the Clock Tower or dropped off in Administration to the attention of Karen Cheney. COLLINGTON SINGERS: The Collington Singers are on hiatus until September. COLLINGTON MACCRA MEET & GREET, MONDAY, MAY 1, 10:30AM – 1ST FLOOR MEETING ROOM: Meet with the Collington MaCCRA executive board to learn more about what MaCCRA does. REMINDER: The next Marketing Committee meets on Thursday, May 4 at 11AM in the Board Room. CERAMIC HEATERS: The Maintenance team will be making the rounds to apartments and cottages to retrieve heaters that were provided to residents during cold temperatures. If you have a heater that needs to get picked up, contact x2151 or simply place a work order in the system.

SHABBAT SERVICE & DINNER: The next Sabbath service and dinner for Collington’s Jewish community is scheduled for Friday, May 5, beginning promptly at 5:30PM in the dining room. For reservations, please call the dining room x2135 no later than Thursday, May 4 at 4PM. COUNTRY STORE: What an upside down world! When I was young, Easter consisted of pastel-dyed peeps and ducklings from the pet store And chocolate Easter eggs bigger than Ostrich eggs, filled with coconut filling, one slice a day permitted. All delivered, they said, by Easter bunnies one foot tall. I’m relieved the chicks and ducklings are outlawed now, but what a surprise on Sunday when there was in the Ivy Room a 5 1/2 ft. rabbit delivering robin egg sized chocolate Easter eggs with no filling! What?! Where’s my Ostrich-sized Easter egg? The 5 ½ ft. rabbit had no clue. A young rabbit, I think, too young to have shared our Easter traditions of long ago. Oh, well, things change, and so does the Country Store. We have more new products requested by residents. Try the Banana-Nut, Cinnamon-Apple, and Blueberry muffins! Cascade dishwasher packets, and always panty liners. Always changing!! And don’t forget the next market day is April 28. DOROTHY VICKERY MEMORIAL SERVICE: Dorothy’s service will be held on Monday, April 24 at 10:30AM at Bethlehem Chapel, Washington National Cathedral, on 3101 Wisconsin Ave, NW Washington DC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Madeira School or the National Cathedral. VET AT COLLINGTON: Dr. Maturo will be here on Monday, May 15 to visit our furry friends. If you would like to make an appointment, please call Pat King, x7333.

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. The group was born in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they could not find three wise men or a virgin. So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and they created song parodies and skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor.

Have any ideas for a fun and exciting trip? The Trips Committee meets the 1st Tuesday of every month.

We have installed a new emergency telephone by the lake, replacing the old one.

Auditorium Improvements: We have raised the stage lighting so it doesn’t hang down in view of the audience. It also allows more upward room for raised hands/arms. We modified the back curtains, placing them on a track allowing them to open from the center, which allows the back wall to be exposed for acoustical purposes. We added a second back curtain track to allow a different back color curtain. We also added new black side curtains that have splits which allow more side stage entrance options. We have also implemented new microphone heads and adjusted the sound. Lastly, we fixed the stage wheelchair lift and it can be used by calling Security for the key.

Greetings! Here is the updated information on staff response times in IL. This data was first reported on March 17, 2017 at the Community Meeting as a part of the Health Services Action Plan Tracking Tool shared previously. We will continue to report this information at the monthly Community Meetings for the next few months and ongoing in The Courier.

Security & Nurse Response Times in Minutes

January February March Average

Response Time - Security 4.50 7.60 5.70 5.93

Response Time - Nurse 4.50 13.30 9.60 9.13

These are response times as measured from the moment security receives a call/alert for assistance initiated by an IL resident. Both the security and nurse response times are measured from the same starting time. For instance, on average for the past 3 months security has arrived in 5.93 minutes and the nurse on average has arrived in 9.13 minutes (3.2 minutes after security arrived, i.e. 9.13 minus 5.93).

In addition to response times, we are reporting data on frequency of calls made for assistance. They are categorized as Emergency or Non-Emergency. Emergency calls refer to any assistance that involves a need for medical attention or other emergency. Non-emergency calls include incidents like resident locked out, toilet clogged, appliance issues, etc. These types of calls do not include more routine things that are not a result of a resident asking for individual assistance. For example, residents that work in the OO Shop regularly ask security to open units to collect donated items…these types of calls are counted in this reported data.

Calls to 911 are a subset of the overall number of emergency calls to security. For the month of March, security responded to 17 calls for emergency assistance and of those 17 times 911 was called 6 times or approximately one-third of the time. The vast majority of calls for assistance are non-emergency situations.
