THIS WEEKEND WEEKEND WEED WARRIORS, SATURDAY APRIL 2, 9:30AM: We will head for the top of the hill, near the ham radio antenna, to take out an invasive that is taking over several trees. Looks pretty enough, as it's an evergreen, but like the vines, it kills trees. Long term, and not plausibly within our capacity with hand tools and aging backs, is some systemic work on the Trail to limit erosion. E.g., on steeper slopes, we really should have a series of 4x4s set on an angle in the trail to send runoff to the sides. But with present resources, this really is a long term prospect, first to find the money. CANDLELIGHT CONCERT, SUNDAY, APRIL 3, 3PM – AUDITORIUM: Five friends and colleagues in the U.S. Marine Band in Washington, D.C. formed The Valor Brass Quintet in the summer of 2004. The goal of the ensemble is to perform landmark works of the

  • Collington April 4- April 10, 2016 6

brass quintet repertoire in live recitals. From their beginning, they have toured various regions of the United States performing master classes and recitals at universities and schools around the nation. The quintet actively commissions new works. Returning by popular demand, their concert will offer a variety of engaging and dynamic music sure to be enjoyed by all.

THIS WEEK MONDAY NIGHT MOVIE, “Spotlight” 2015, R , (129MIN): MONDAY, APRIL 4, 7PM – AUDITORIUM: Revealing a string of cover-ups stretching back decades, a team of "Boston Globe" reporters exposes the Catholic Archdiocese's history of keeping reports about child molestation and other priest-initiated abuse under wraps. EPISCOPAL SERVICE, TUESDAY, APRIL, 5, 10 AM – CHAPEL: Rev. Stephen Rorke, Priest in Charge at St. Johns Church, Broad Creek TUESDAY AFTERNOON MOVIE: “Molly & Me” TUESDAY, APRIL 5, 1:30 PM – AUDITORIUM: Aspiring actress Molly Barry (Gracie Fields) needs a job, and grumpy retired politician John Graham (Monty Woolley) -- having divorced his wife and shunned his son, Jimmy (Roddy McDowall) -- needs a housekeeper. When Molly takes the position, she begins to realize the extent of the wealthy Graham's unpleasantness. Moly befriends the butler, Peabody (Reginald Gardiner), also an out-of-work actor, and slowly brings Graham out of his shell, teaching him manners while reuniting him with his son. 2nd FLOOR DISTRICT MEETING, TUESDAY, APRIL 5, 1:30 PM – PING PONG ROOM: Third floor, first room to the left, exiting the elevator. KAREN BOYCE, Chief Operating Officer: As you well know, Collington completed a search for a Chief Operating Officer and named Karen Boyce as the successful final candidate. Karen’s original start date at Collington was to be April 11th. Karen asked if she could start early…on April 4th. Far be it from me to stifle her enthusiasm so my answer was: Certainly! Below is a short bio on Karen. Her office will be in the Facilities Office Suite in apt. 163 for the time being, her extension is 4789 and her email is [email protected]. I ask that you welcome her with open arms but then give her time to get to know Collington. Coming to our community can be quite the “experience” and we want to give Karen the time she needs to get acclimated. Thanks so much. -Marvell BACKGROUND SUMMARY: Karen Boyce, LNHA, was most recently the Director of Continuing Care at a nearby CCRC. A proven leader, Karen was responsible for managing a 136-bed skilled nursing unit, 147 assisted care beds, (including 44 memory care beds), as well as in- and out-patient therapy services for her own population and the independent living residents. Karen was in her previous role for nearly six years and with her employer for a total of 15 years. During her tenure with the company

  • Collington April 4- April 10, 2016 13

she spent four years in managerial roles in dining services before completing her Administrator in Training (AIT). Following completion of her AIT, Karen served as Assistant Administrator for the assisted living and long-term care program, before being tapped to move into the role of Director of Continuing Care. Still earlier in her career, Karen spent seven years with a health care system in dining and dietary services roles, and held progressively more senior roles in dining management at both acute care hospitals and traditional nursing homes in the Baltimore and Washington DC areas. After graduating high school in Maryland, Karen earned an Associate’s degree in nutrition. Ten years later she earned a BS in Health Management and Business and an MS in Human Resources Management, both of which degrees were completed in the evening programs at Towson University while holding full time dining services management roles. Karen is a resident of Prince George’s County, living just 10 minutes away from Collington.
