Cornhole boards and beanbags will be available in the courtyard for any residents that

would like to play! The boards will stay in the courtyard for the summer months, feel

WEED WARRIORS SATURDAY 8:30 AM (note time): We plan to work on a new area this

Saturday, across the creek from where we have worked previously. We will meet at the

crosswalk just beyond the inner gate house so one of us can show the way. Please bring

clippers, loppers, saws, etc. Come and help or just to see what we do. If the weather

Monday, 06/14, 9:00 am – Movement Monday: Cardiovascular and Functional Fitness

Class: Heart healthy cardio exercises coupled with functional fitness training that is

designed to mimic ADL movements (activities of daily living) in your day-to-day life in an

effort to help your body prepare itself for common physical tasks – everything from

rising to a standing position, reaching down to pick something up, buttoning a shirt or

even putting on a sweater.

Wood Shop: Urgent meeting of the Wood Shop via Zoom! Important changes are

happening, and we need to make plans for our best way forward.

Monday June 14 at 11 AM in the Auditorium There will be a Memorial Service for

those Collingtonians who have died during the past year. We will be reading the names

of those persons who have died, and their names will be placed on the Memorial Wall

which will be displayed in the corridor outside the Auditorium.

Roots: Members of the Arco String Ensemble Perform on Broadway Wednesday, June 16th at 6:00pm Outdoors on Broadway - Bring a chair and a beverage of choice and come hear a quartet from Arco String Ensemble perform a diverse program outdoors on Broadway. From fun fiddle tunes to the captivating music of Kenji Bunch, the program is titled Roots as each piece displays unique ways in which composers incorporate their heritage into their music. There will be a limited number of chairs set up for those unable to bring their own.

Every week there is a different focus. We mix up almost everything!

Yoga in Person! - Now that the auditorium has opened, come join us in yoga on

Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. It’s fun and encouraging to be together -the props are there,

and you’ll be able to see and hear from the big screen. For 45 minutes we do lots of

warmups by stretching – lots of breathing for relaxing -and a mix of seated, standing and

floor movements.

Friday, 06/18, 4:00 pm – One Day University: Juneteenth Explained: A Tradition of

Remembrance and Revival

June 19, 1865 marks the day when United States Army Major General Gordon Granger

informed enslaved blacks in Galveston, Texas that slavery had been abolished and that

they were thenceforth free. The following year, on June 19, 1866, Galveston area

freedmen celebrated the first Juneteenth Day. Today, more than forty state

governments observe Juneteenth as an official state observance and an increasing

number of American corporations recognize Juneteenth as a corporate holiday. In this

course, Black Studies professor Karlos K. Hill will explain why initially enslaved blacks–

but today millions of Americans (from different racial, regional, and economic

backgrounds)–increasingly celebrate the moment when enslaved blacks in Galveston,

Texas learned that they were no longer enslaved.

The Vet is Coming, The Vet is Coming! - Yeeaaa, Dr. Hoague is coming from Animal

Medical Center of Watkins Park on Monday, July 12th. Any resident desiring an

appointment for their pet call the office at (301) 249-3030 by Friday the 9th of July to

request an appointment giving all pertinent information--owner's name, phone number,

residence number at Collington, pet's species and name, and the reason the pet needs

to be seen. Basically, they want to have enough information to be adequately prepared

to meet your pet's needs.

PING PONG PLAYERS!!! There has been a change. We are NOW playing in the Game

Room ever Saturday and Sunday from 10-3. We will have the table set up for you. I

encouraged to send your comments and suggestions to me as to how the process can

iron fence surrounding the Hilltop Gardens. It is there to keep out the critters who

would like to ravage our carefully tended gardens. Recently, some folks who have come

inside the iron fence have been neglecting to close the gates as they leave. Please, as

you leave the area, turn around and double check that the gate is completely

latched. The double gates at the top of the gardens are there to allow vehicles to enter


as needed. Folks on foot are meant to use the nearby single gate. Thank you for

helping to protect the gardens.

SPEAKERS COMMITTEE: Now that things have begun to reopen after Covid-19, the

Speakers Committee is planning to relaunch the program that brings outside speakers to

our campus. Covid restrictions permitting, we expect to return to programs

approximately once a month, probably beginning in September following the usual

summer hiatus. Several scheduled programs were postponed when the virus hit in

March 2020. Most of those will be rescheduled when we reopen so we expect to have a

pretty full calendar for the rest of 2021. Following that we will be inviting speakers for

the future. As always, we encourage residents to suggest appropriate outside

speakers. Please feel free to share your ideas and suggestions with any member of the

Committee: Glen Johnson, Chair, Sue Embree, Sipra Johnson, Peter Pfund, Henry

Thomas and Don Zelman.

ATTENTION OPPORTUNITY OUTLET SHOPPERS!! The OO Shop is experiencing a large

influx of clothing, and, although we welcome your donations, due to lack of space we

must HALT any further clothing donations until further notice We also remind you that

when we once again begin accepting clothing, it must be clean, no stains or tears, no

missing buttons, and no underwear! If you don’t want to be seen in it, neither does

anyone else! Regarding donations other than clothing, make sure it is clean and in good

working order. If it really should be trashed, put it in the trash and not in our green

drop-off wagon!


Department Updates

COO, Megan Barbour,

MedStar Center for Successful Aging at Collington

Dr. Sign will be out of the office this week. Therefore, there will be a change to the clinic

schedule.

On Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday Marecca and Lewanda will continue to be

present for routine lab work and will coordinate appropriate telehealth support. Dr.

Hennawi will be on site Tuesday and Friday.

Residents who need to reach a practitioner outside of the regular clinic scheduled hours

may dial 301-570-7363 directly. Residents may still call the clinic after hours and on the

weekends to hear this number on the clinic voicemail also.

Facilities

If you are experiencing an after-business hours or weekend utility outage, especially

with your HVAC system as warm weather has arrived, please contact security at ext.

2020 and they will respond. If needed, security will alert the on-call maintenance team

member. The on-call maintenance team member will respond on site to help trouble

shoot and resolve the issue. Submitting work orders for this urgent work could delay

response times and we do not want any residents to go without utilities.

Pardon our Mess- Refreshing the Campus

Please pardon our mess at the Clocktower and security entrances as the facilities team

are working on refreshing these areas for summer. Please be aware there may be wet

paint in these areas over the next week.

RESIDENT SATISFACTION SURVEY: Team Members from WeCare Connect are reaching

out with phone calls to those who did not respond to the survey. If you see WCC on

your caller-ID it is a member from their team. Thanks to everyone who has participated

so far! So far, we’ve heard from 70% independent living, 64% skilled nursing and 29%

assisted living residents. We appreciate hearing from you!

CHRISTIAN RAMSEY, Hospitality Services:

Our trash hauler Tenleytown trash has been bought by Republic Services last week. This

purchase or transition was not communicated to us and we apologize for any

inconvenience. Please bear with us as we navigate this transition with the new

company, but please be assured that if our requirements are not met, we have other

companies on stand-by to partner with moving forward.

Hospitality update:

Shred-it boxes are for the removal and destruction of personally sensitive information,

not bulk paper items. Over the last few months, we have had stacks of couriers,

newspapers, coupon packs, advertising mail, etc. stuffed in the shred it boxes. This is

not their purpose, please use the blue recycle bins in the mailbox area to discard

unwanted paper items that do not contain sensitive information. We pay by the pound

to have this picked up.

Wi-Fi enhancement project update, Robert Reigle


Work has started in the apartment hallways to enhance the Wi-Fi. Apartments will be

completed this month.

Once apartments are completed, we will be working in the Health Center next.

New Verizon fiber circuit final install steps happening next week.

***PLEASE NOTE that the Wi-Fi will have brief outages between 11am and Noon on

Monday June 14th as we are working to utilize the new Verizon Fiber circuit. ***

Life Enrichment/Fitness & Wellness Updates:

Pool - Please sign in and out in the Pool Area for contact tracing purposes, the pool is for Independent living residents only at this time. - Please see insert for schedule or the bulletin board outside the pool - Like many organizations, Premier Pool is experiencing lifeguard shortages, when a closure is known Premier Pool will alert Natalee in advance, however for unexpected closures will result in a shorter notice period. We appreciate your patience as we work through these challenges.

Fitness Gym

The fitness gym is operating at 100% capacity for Independent Living Residents only at

this time and the fitness gym returned to 24/7 operations.

Per PG County, Vaccinated residents (2 weeks or more from J&J vaccine or 2nd dose of

Moderna or Pfizer vaccine) do not need to wear a mask in the fitness center gym.

Those residents receiving therapy services and using the fitness center gym may be

asked to wear a mask while working with Assisted Rehab.

Residents MUST sanitize equipment after use.

We will have a sign in sheet placed outside the fitness center door, we ask that you do

sign in and out.


Creighton Center

-Natalee is looking for donations of un-opened bags of hard candy or boxed movie

theater candy (examples would be the kind you can buy at the dollar store I the candy

section), if anyone is able to assist with providing some un-opened items, please place

them in the large wooden basket outside of apt. 216. Thank you!

We are pleased to announce that we are moving along in our re-opening phases for

Guests/visitors and Collington Independent Living Residents.

At this time, we are able to invite Independent Living Residents and their guests to

gather indoors and celebrate Birthdays and honor Independent Living Residents with

Memorial Services in the Chapel, Game Room, or Auditorium. We acknowledge the

importance of these specific events and are glad we are once again able to gather

together for them.

Please be aware of the following guidelines for this phased approach:

-In this phase Guests/Visitors are only able to gather indoors in resident common areas

for these specific functions (birthdays and memorial services). All other indoor

events/programs are still on pause for visitors, including Dining, Concerts, fitness

programs, and other activities/programs. If you have any questions regarding these

criteria, please reach out to Natalee Zimmerman or Hope Nevins.

-Guests/visitors will need to enter these indoor spaces through the security entrance and

follow screening procedures before proceeding to the indoor gathering space.

-PG County still has a mask mandate in place for groups gathered indoors of 50 persons

or more regardless of vaccination status

-Guests/visitors and residents who are not fully vaccinated are required to wear a mask

indoors.

-If an event requires catering services, please be aware that catering is able to offer light

refreshments during this phase. Please contact the Culinary Team for any requests.


-If you need to make a room reservation please reach out to Tiffan’e Markham, Kim

-Please be aware that outdoor gatherings are always the safest approach to when

meeting with members outside of your household and Collington does invite guests to

Update from the Master Planning Committee for the June 11 Courier

From the Master Planning Committee (MPC):

The MPC met twice so far in June. The objective of these meetings were to

invite input from Committee members, especially its 10 resident members

about the selection of sites and types of units for the construction of new IL

units on campus based on the engineer’s preliminary study of the campus.

No decisions have yet been made.

Amy Carpenter, senior partner at SFCS, our architect firm, took the

information from the preliminary civil engineering consultants (MHG) on all

the unbuilt areas of our campus that are NOT suitable for construction

because of legal limits that include:

• A 100 ft offset around the edge of our property

• A surprisingly large flood plain area that includes the Collington lake

• Slopes that are too steep to build on

• Stormwater easements – these are pipes carrying water underneath

the middle of our property and emptying into the Collington Pond,

between the 5000s and the 5100s.

In our first MPC meeting on June 2, Amy showed us a map of our campus

identifying 15 Zones that had not been eliminated by this first engineering

study. As a result of discussion and inputs from experts such as Frank

Mandy, Kendal VP for Development, Charlie Clapper, Chair of Grounds, and

Mike Burke, chair of the Climate Group, and suggestions from the rest of us,

Amy returned for a follow-up meeting on June 4, and showed us a map that

had eliminated some zones, leaving us to discuss a total of nine.

The unit types under consideration were cottages and villas, such as we

already have on campus, and a compact hybrid building that would provide

six units with garage parking. All units would range in size from 1200 sq ft

to 1700 sq ft – the ‘sweet spot’ identified by our Marketing Department and

confirmed in the Kivov Market Study.

As Amy presented options for placing different types in different zones, each

resident gave feedback about preferred zones and unit types. These views

varied considerably, with some overlap. However, there was agreement on

what we were trying to achieve:

• The construction of about 38-40 new IL units somewhere on campus

to serve as the financial engine for the repositioning of the Creighton

Center and the upgrading of common areas such as the dining room,

and Ivy Bar

• To make decisions that would:

o Attract new residents

o Minimize disruption to the community and its culture

o Minimize construction costs (e.g. by limiting the number of sites)

o Save as much as possible of our trees, berms, green space, etc.

o Minimize our harm to the environment in view of climate change.

Amy will take the feedback from the MPC, and also the Master Planning

Team and project consultants, and make a presentation to the Collington

Board at its June 11 meeting.

Progress to date will be included in the RA President report at the Council

Meeting on June 15.

The next MPC meeting is June 16. Following that meeting, a report will be

prepared to share an update with residents, including any recommendations

via a hard copy in the binder in the library and the Courier.
