    ITEMS OF INTEREST

Regardless of what you think of him, these are words of wisdom....

    *A message from Bill Gates*.

Subject: *What is the Corona/ Covid-19 Virus Really Teaching us?

It is reminding us that we are all equal, regardless of our culture, religion, occupation, financial situation or how famous we are. This disease treats us all equally, perhaps we should to. If you don’t believe me, just ask Tom Hanks.

Delivery difficulties at Collington. Having groceries delivered? Drivers getting lost or going through the Villages? It is best to provide them our mailing address - 10450 Lottsford Road AND 'Collington, A Kendal Affiliate.' Google Maps will then direct them to our first Gatehouse. Additional driving directions for apartments, cottage parking lots, etc. can be found in the Uber/Lyft document on the RA website under Resources.

Community Outreach Committee Food Pantry Information-Collington residents have been so kind in donating food to the Food Pantry for our less fortunate neighbors. A number of people now have asked how they might help the Bowie Interfaith Pantry & Emergency Aid Fund. Currently the greatest need, as you might imagine, is for donations of money. If you choose to make a contribution, it may be sent to: The Bowie Interfaith Pantry & Emergency Aid Fund; 2614 Kenhill Drive, #134; Bowie, MD 20715. Please make a note that you are a resident of Collington Life Care Community. In this way they will know that we continue to care about Food Pantry clients. If you have any questions, please contact Gretta Estey or Nadine Hathaway. Thank you. ON-SITE DERMATOLOGY ANNOUNCEMENT- Onsite Dermatology is now offering Telemedicine! We can continue to care for your residents and can diagnose, prescribe, and treat. The telemedicine visit is a real time interactive communication visit between a patient and health care provider that requires audio and video. The process to schedule residents very similar to how we normally schedule in-person visits.

For IL residents that have the capability to have an interactive visit (video call via FaceTime, Skype, etc.), we would schedule directly with the IL resident.

For AL, MC, HC or any IL residents that do not have the capability to have an interactive visit (video call via FaceTime, Skype, WhatsApp, etc.), we would need a designated contact at the community with this ability. This person will then assist each patient for the telemedicine visit. The date and time of the call would be prearranged by our office.

If the practitioner feels that the patient needs a procedure, i.e.: patient has unknown growth and needs a biopsy, the plan of the care will note to be performed at next visit. If you require nursing notes, our office will forward following the visit. On-Site Dermatology would like to schedule the residents’ that are due for a follow up appointment with our telemedicine services. Additionally, if you have the new residents in need of being seen, please forward their information. (Face sheet, med list if applicable). Please call On-Site Dermatology at 877.345.5300 or email [email protected] to coordinate a telemedicine visit.

CENSUS 2020: Census forms are arriving in the mail. It is vital that they be taken care of before April 1st online. If someone has no computer and can’t do that, a paper copy will be mailed but that is a big hassle and money waste for the government now that money is needed more to save lives and incomes for those losing jobs. Also, if the census is not filled out either online or on paper, a census worker will come on campus to see the law is followed. With our ‘no visitor’ stance that would be a big problem since the law says it must be done. VOICEMAIL INSTRUCTIONS: For anyone who is unclear as to how they access voice mail, the instructions are as follows:

To enter your Voicemail from your own landline phone, dial x 7200. Then follow the prompts to hear or send messages, change your incoming answer message, etc. For help: x 2151.

If you have received a message, your phone will alert you with either a blinking light or a “stutter” in the dial tone. To hear your message, dial x 7200 and follow the prompts.

To get your messages when you are not in your home or at Collington, dial your own home number (301-xxx-xxxx). Wait for the call to connect, and when the message comes on the line, enter “*”. You will be prompted to enter your ID. (Your ID is the last four digits of your phone number), then your PIN password. Your PIN password should be the same as your extension or 12345# unless it has been changed.

For help changing the PIN: x 2151 or place a work order.

These instructions may also be found on page 2 of your phone directory.

2020-2021 Subscriptions- Interest sheets for Roundhouse, NSO, Shakespeare Theatre, and BSO will all be available in a binder next to the trip book. Collington will provide transportation only if at least 10 people are signed up. Once you are signed up, we will contact you and confirm we have the appropriate number of residents to permit the trip to go. When we do this, you should purchase your tickets. DO NOT purchase tickets until we provide confirmation..

    DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS

FROM MARKETING: Covid-19 Information Line: In an effort to better communicate our Covid-19 precautionary measures, particularly with family members and loved ones off-campus, Collington has established an information line at # 800-951-5670. This resource will provide pertinent updates, similar to the communication residents are already receiving via Channel 972, email blasts, and The Courier. It is important to note that this number will provide recorded updates, but will not function as a “hotline,” i.e., with live team members fielding incoming inquiries and concerns. We welcome you to share this information line number with friends or family off-campus who are interested in the safety measures we are taking here at Collington. Be well!

    Collington’s Covid-19 Information line # (800) 951-5670.

FROM CULINARY SERVICES: Meal Delivery will occur daily between 12 noon and 3 pm.

    FROM the COO: Megan Barbour

Please join me in welcoming Hope Nevins to the Collington team. Hope started Monday, March 23rd in the role of Health Services Administrator. Hope can be reached at [email protected] and extension 4762. Her office is located on the Brandywine neighborhood, across from the Health Services suite. Welcome Hope!

While preparations for the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the start of some projects, I’m excited to announce that the signage project is finally under way! Over the next weeks you will notice new posts on some signs, height changes for signs and some new signs being placed throughout the exterior of the community. While there will be additional signage to complete, this will be a great start to the project. Thank you so much to the residents and committees that helped to provide guidance and worked so hard on this project. As parts of the signage project are completed, Kyle

  • 12 Courier                                                                                                                                 March 30‐April 6,2020

Olsen, horticulturist, will then begin working with residents to complete the landscaping around the posts.

HORTICULTURIST UPDATE: Due to weather and Covid-19 protocol we are finishing up clean- up of cottage beds by Friday 3/26- We will then move into de-mulching of cottages and moving toward schedule in last weeks courier. Mowing will be delayed to accommodate smaller crew size and Covid-19 protocol. Residents are asked to please refrain from any contact with the landscape crew on campus while they maintain the social distance of at least six feet. Any questions can be directed to Raef- the foreman or Kyle. In the next week we plan on having the "meadows" on perimeter and behind 5000's mowed as well. We are asking all residents to please not drive on the turf areas in any vehicle campus wide.

    Thanks, Kyle

FROM ADMINISTRATION: If you have not previously provided a family member to be added to our “Family Distribution Listing”, please send their name and email to Karen Cheney at [email protected] MANAGER-ON-CALL: As of March 14th, the Manager-on-Call will now work from home on the weekends.

  • A Note from Ann Gillespie

    Happy Friday Collingtonians!

I hope that our transition to this temporary way of being together hasn’t been too tough on anyone.  I’ve discovered through talking with colleagues that we’re about a week ahead of other retirement communities in my national network thanks to the focus and hustle of our team and your support!

As we ready our community for the next phase of the Covid‐19 marathon, I want to be sure we have a structured way to stay connected with all our residents.  Last week, I met with Sandy Short, Karen Cheney, Phoebe Graham, and Marian Adjei‐Ampomah, and we created a new program we’re calling the Collington Caring Ambassadors Program.  Marian is working with the health center team to finalize a similar program for residents and family members.

The objectives for this effort are:

    1. Establish ongoing communication and outreach with Collington independent living residents and Health Center Residents and Family Members during the COVID 19 Pandemic

    2. Identify individual resident needs and respond appropriately, with follow up by team members or fellow residents

    3. Engage and encourage social interaction across the Collington Community to lessen social isolation

    4. Establish specific ways for residents to support each other and our team

The Program will work like this (assuming flexibility to refine as we go):

    1. Ten team members will serve as Ambassadors.  They’ve been assigned the same group of residents to call once a week on Mondays‐Wednesdays.  Before they start their calls, they will reach out to the District Leader to touch base.

    2. The Ambassadors have a short list of questions they’ll ask around how you’re doing, what supplies you have or need, how you’re getting information from us, what technology tools you’re using/or not, etc..  This will give us baseline information we can use to follow up.

    3. The team will have weekly calls on Thursday mornings to talk through things we need to follow up on, which items the team will take on, and which items other residents might be able to help support.

  •

I believe that through this program we can make a real contribution to all residents’ wellbeing during this challenging time.  We know that the one of the greatest risks of social isolation is loneliness, which can have a significant impact on our health.  I want us to do everything possible to avoid the potential effect; and I know that regular connections with each other will go a long way in reducing the risk.

So, it’s a simple, straightforward approach: reaching out, identifying needs, following up. I know there will be many hands ready to help; thank you in advance for that support!

    Remember our new Collington Greeting:

Stay six feet apart, put your hand on your heart, and say hello!

    With love and gratitude,

    Ann

    Ann E. Gillespie CEO, Collington

  • BEWARE!

    Please Pay Attention

I am sharing information placed on our discussion group by our own Diane Fleming, PhD, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Duke U. Medical Institutions, Certified Biological Safety Professional (ASM, ABSA).

“Although we are able to go to the essential businesses, i.e., grocery, pharmacy, liquor stores, pet store, etc., it should be done as infre-quently and as efficiently as possible. To protect ourselves and others from the coronavirus, we have been told to stay at home, encouraged not to get together in groups of more than 10 and, even then, to use social distancing (6 feet). We have been told of surfaces and locations where the virus can remain for various periods of time but have also been told that this RNA virus has a lipid envelope which makes it very easy to disinfect and render inactive. We have repeatedly been told how effective handwashing with soap is in inactivating the virus as well as in physically removing it from our hands. We have seen or read what can happen in a large "close" family when 4 of 11 died from COVID-19 in Freehold, NJ this past week. We must not get together. We have already restricted visitors from campus but have not restrict-ed residents from potential exposure when shopping or traveling off-site.

Some of us do comply with the precautions being asked of us but I do not think others are taking this as seriously as they should. Please view the excellent video posted on our RA website on March 25th “The Coronavirus Explained; What You Should Do.” It provides the informa-tion that you really need to understand the seriousness of our current situation. It shows what actually happens when the corona virus in-fects a human and what we should all do.

No one has immunity to this virus which has been allowed to spread through our country. Neither the CDC nor our White House task force asked for the test developed and provided by the World Health Organi-

  • zation. As a result, we do not have a count of how many are infected here. Every day the media, shocked by the increase in cases, hypes it in every news report. The RA website video shows you the exponential increases we can expect if we do not use precautions. Since we only test those with symptoms or those who are important enough to be tested, we can expect the numbers to continue to increase as symp-toms develop. Even now we do not have enough test kits to test the newly symptomatic. A true disaster for us.

By choice and in an "abundance of caution,” I have not left this cam-pus since my March 9th grocery shopping trip. Now that meals are be-ing delivered, I only leave for one trash and mail run every few days. I am grateful to be able to stay in my apartment. This is not the time to be afraid, it is the time to use the CDC precautions. We were actually given the time to prepare and told what we needed to do. Now is the time to continue to wash your hands and stay at an appropriate dis-tance (6ft). This virus is the easiest microbe to inactivate because of that lipid envelope. You do not need Lysol or bleach, you can use soap and water, or even white vinegar and dishwashing soap (google it). Use email, messaging, Skype, face time or some other technical approach to "see" those you need to see. I plan a virtual celebration of my 84th birthday just as I have seen our deployed troops do with their family holidays. I can identify with them as an Army brat and Air Force wife. I believe that "We can do this" if all Collington residents and staff comply. We are all in this together. so it will take all of us to keep each other well.

    PLEASE……………..

Be well, be SAFE and NO hugging!
