THIS WEEKEND

Friday, December 18 – Sunday, December 20 BOWIE YOUTH CELLO CHRISTMAS CONCERT & SING-ALONG: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19 – 1:30PM, AUDITORIUM: All are welcome! WEEKEND WEED WARRIORS: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19 – 9:30AM, DOCK @ COLLINGTON LAKE: This Saturday, absent rain, we will meet at the Dock at the Lake. We will walk the trail to where the ham radio tower and antennae are located. While we will surely cut various stuff along the way, I expect to get a sense of work awaiting us, get some pictures, get people's observations about the trail's condition, and what's been recently done or dumped or cleaned up. At the top, it would be good if we can begin taming a major vine infestation to the south of the Burial Ground. The long-damaged sign pointing to the Burial Ground has at last been replaced. Basil & Susan's graves await us. The mystery of the so-called boundary marker will be revealed. We meet in the Ivy Room at the regular time on December 26th to

plan out what we want to accomplish over the winter. NO ACTUAL WEED-PULLING ON DECEMBER 26.

ROUNDHOUSE THEATER; STAGE KISS: SUNDAY, DECEMBER 20; Departing Collington at 12:45PM. Art imitates Life. Life imitates Art. When two actors with a history are thrown together as romantic leads in a forgotten 1930s melodrama, they quickly lose touch with reality as the story onstage follows them offstage. Sarah Ruhl’s singular voice returns to Round House with Stage Kiss, a charming tale about what happens when lovers share a stage kiss—or when actors share a real one. LAST CALL TO ORDER SMOKED SALMON FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Last minute orders of smoked salmon will be taken until the end of the day on Sunday, December 20. ½ filet is $15; a full filet is $30. Please call Mike McCulley at x7338. Proceeds support the Residents Association.

Dear friends,

As you know, John Diffey will be concluding twenty-four years of service to

Kendal on June 30, 2016. As you are also aware, Sean Kelly will be succeeding

John to become the third CEO of The Kendal Corporation since Kendal’s

founding in 1971.

Since his appointment to the CEO-elect role this summer, Sean has been visiting

each affiliate, listening actively, engaging and sharing thoughts and expectations

for Kendal as it moves into its next phase.

Those conversations have been going very well and are producing renewed

engagement, fresh momentum, and excitement about Kendal’s future across the

System. They’ve also been stimulating for Sean and have helped to deepen

connections with him throughout the Kendal family and lend even more clarity

to our way forward.

Based on the energy for further engagement, the opportunity to form a new

vision and set of plans for the future, and their shared sense of ideal timing; John

and Sean together recommended that the timetable for the transition in the office

of President and CEO be accelerated. They proposed, at the October 28, 2015

meeting of the Board of The Kendal Corporation, that Sean become Kendal’s

President and CEO effective January 1, 2016 and that John stay on part-time

while Sean recruits and selects new leadership in the corporate office in the

several positions that are or will be open in the near term. As you know, The

Kendal Corporation presently is recruiting for a CFO and will be recruiting

successor leadership following the retirements of Director for Marketing and

Public Relations Bill Silbert and Director for Outreach Beryl Goldman, each of

whom will retire in June of 2016.

The Board of The Kendal Corporation heard John’s and Sean’s suggestion,

excused each in turn in order to consider it in Executive Session, and concurred

in it heartily. To us, it is another well-considered step in a very healthy

transition.

Accompanying the changes in their respective roles will be a set of detailed steps

to enact it fully and clearly. John will move to a new office location, will enable

email and voice-mail notifications of the change, will work closely with Sean,

and will in every other way continue to support the transition. Sean will assume

the leadership of the Kendal System, glean the learning from his “listening tour”

and the many related conversations, and begin to lead us in forming the future

focus and direction of Kendal.

Through the entire process, John, The Kendal Corporation Board, the Search

Committee, and Sean have played instrumental leadership roles in making this

transition as thoughtfully and carefully implemented as possible. This transition

has been open with respect to its outcome, transparent, well-communicated, and

ultimately as constructive as possible for the future health and vitality of Kendal.

On behalf of my colleagues on the Board of The Kendal Corporation, I want to

convey our deep appreciation to you also for your understanding, patience,

continued commitment to Kendal, and enthusiasm for our future work in

“Together, transforming the experience of aging”®.

Gratefully,

Joan Countryman, Board Chair

The Kendal Corporation

December 17, 2015 - Wireless Network Upgrade On November 24, we shared an update with you about the replacement of the wireless network equipment here at Collington. When you shake a tree, things fall out that you didn’t know were living there. We have found a few areas with insufficient power or incomplete cabling, and a few areas with no power that have been running off extension cords. We’ve had some equipment come in that was not as the engineers specified for this project, so we have had to return a few pieces and wait for the replacements to be delivered, which is in process. None of this has significantly impacted the project, and we expect the unexpected when undertaking any infrastructure project. Phase One – one-for-one equipment replacement – in process We have replaced the APs in several areas of the campus – including the 1000s, 2000s, 3000s, 4000s, the apartments, and the Creighton Center in the Arbor, Administration, and health center. When the new network SSID shows up on your device (Kendal_Resident), the old one (Collington) will disappear. You may join the new network, using the network key (Password) 123Resident. The key is case sensitive so make sure to capitalize the R. Staff and guests may connect to Kendal_Guest, using the network key 123Guest. Even though most of the APs (Access Points) are new and are broadcasting the new network SSIDs, there is some equipment in use that is legacy – it is “old network” equipment. Primarily, these are the switches in the cottages, the fiber aggregation switch, and the firewall on the Comcast router. Because of this, there are periodic conflicts that require a technician to resolve in order to restore and maintain connectivity. Once this first phase is completed, the new APs will connect to new switches and the new fiber aggregation switch, and these conflicts will be resolved. Until this first phase is completed, it is premature do any trouble shooting or fine-tuning of coverage, other than things like resolving a connection conflict or dropped signal. Phase one is expected to be mostly completed by the end of the year – with the likely exception of the 5000s and 5100s. These areas of housing have some particular challenges that will involve a more complex solution than simply replacement of the existing equipment. Phase Two – software and infrastructure engineering – in development This part of the network upgrade is mostly invisible to residents, although there will be a few scheduled, brief, outages as this phase progresses. This involves building additional firewalls, bridging the wireless network (Kendal_Secure) over to the corporate business network, adding specific users for staff to be able to seamlessly and remotely (while on campus) access network resources as though they were at their desk, including files on the data server, voicemail and email, printers, and business applications. During this phase, it is likely the

network keys will change – the SSID’s will remain the same but you will be prompted to enter the new network key (Password) on your device. This phase will be completed in early January. Phase Three – fine-tuning, heatmapping – in development This part of the network upgrade will continue for quite some time after phase one and two are completed, and includes adding additional equipment where the heat mapping shows poor coverage, over time expanding coverage to the woodshop and the lakeside (which will require an additional fiber run and a gateway). The new network is flexible and adaptable, and we will be to do fun stuff like add another SSID for the classrooms to ensure residents taking an iPad class always have a good connection. We will also be working to persuade Comcast to upgrade their equipment and internet speed, to take advantage of the new equipment and the nimbleness it can provide. Other issues If you currently have a private wireless network with Comcast, our advice is that you wait until the network upgrade is completed, then before you cancel your Comcast internet, unplug your Comcast router and test your devices on the Kendal_Resident wireless network to determine if you will be satisfied with the performance and would feel comfortable cancelling your Comcast service. We say this because there may be issues with connecting cellular boosters (which we cannot support on the Kendal_Resident network), streaming on some smart TVs, wireless printers, etc. The new wireless network will not be a private network in your unit – and therefore some of you may wish to keep your Comcast internet and just use the upgraded wireless when you are not at home. And a big thank you to the Collington community We do appreciate everyone’s patience and feedback as we continue to work on this improvement for you. We’d like to especially thank the Resident Technology Committee for their feedback about dropped connections, IP conflicts, etc. as we get the new equipment installed and configured. Undertaking a project of this scale is daunting and the sense that is gets worse before it gets better is probably not misplaced. We are looking forward to Phase Three with great anticipation! We will keep you informed as the project progresses. Thanks again, Amy, Mike, and the Kendal IT team
