return to Collington. Our group name is Collington. Travel to Hillwood and walk through its beautiful Gardens or explore the Fabergé Egg Exhibit. Hillwood's spectacular gardens capture the vision Marjorie Post conceived when building the estate in the 1950s. She designed the gardens to flower in the spring and fall, when she was in residence at Hillwood. Today, they offer something beautiful in every season. The Fabergé Egg Exhibit is designed to delight and surprise; the treasures created by the firm of Carl Fabergé have inspired admiration and intrigue for over a century, both for their remarkable craftsmanship and the fascinating histories that surround them. Now, a special exhibition at Hillwood will unveil new discoveries relating to its own collection of Fabergé Imperial Easter eggs and other famed works. Hillwood Cafe is open for full-service dining 11:30AM- 3:30PM.15 tickets have been donated by a Collington Resident and will be handed out according to the first 15 names on the Trip Sheet. If you are not one of the first 15 on the list to receive a free ticket you will need to pay $12 upon arrival to Hillwood. ITEMS OF INTEREST We CAN make a difference!

Washing dark clothes in cold water saves the energy needed to heat water and helps your clothes retain their color.

CARFIT RESCHEDULED: Due to the inclement weather, CarFit has been postponed to Tuesday, July 24, 2018. Residents who are already registered to participate, your designated time will remain the same. If you have not registered and would like to participate, there are slots available. Please call Kim Rivers X7393 if you would like to sign up or if you have any questions. Sorry for any inconvenience. ANIMAL WASTE & LEASH POLICY: As pet owners and residents in the Collington community we have a responsibility to keep attentive to not only the regulation that our pets always be on a leash when outside of the home and within any Collington boundary, but also to see and pick up any waste material from your pet. There have been a number of complaints about dogs who have not been on leashes often frightening residents, especially those who walk with effort and with equipment. Members of the Pet Committee and other residents have often found themselves picking up pet waste around campus and this unacceptable when we have pet waste stations positioned around campus. Please, pick up your pets waste and make sure your furry friend is on a leash. Thank you. LIBRARY NOTICE: If you cannot find your cards behind the first letter of your last name, take a blank card and use it to sign out books. When returning a book, if you cannot locate your card behind the first letter of the author's last name, put your book in the Return Book box. Library volunteers will take care of it. We are aware that

Page 9: Collington’s Weekly Courier - WordPress.com · guitarist whose repertoire ranges from standard classical guitar works to the Brazilian equivalent of American ragtime. Richard has

Courier 9 July 23– July 29, 2018

someone has been disturbing the cards and are doing all we can to deal with it. WINDOW SILL MONEY: You may wonder what we do with the money you put into the Window Sill box. This year, because we are paying $1,980+ for newspaper subscriptions from our $4,000.00 book budget, there is less money for books. Most of the money you donate helps us to provide Large Print books. Until now we have added 35 new books to this area at approximately $30.00+ per book. Thank you for your generous donations. FROM THE COURTYARD COMMITTEE: We’re working hard on improving the Courtyard, but we’re a small group and we need help with the watering required by the flowers we’ve planted there. Kyle Olsen, Collington’s horticulturist, faithfully waters the shrubs, but he doesn’t have time to do the flowers, as well. Two people have already volunteered to do Wednesday mornings as a team; could you do either Monday or Friday mornings? The task takes about an hour, and is easier to tackle in twos. If you’re willing to help, please call or e-mail Anne Stone at x7282, e-mail [email protected]. Thank you! DOOR SENSORS: When you are away from Collington and you provided either Karen Cheney or Vern Rious with your Departure Form, you will still receive a voice mail message to “check in.” HOWEVER, Security will not respond if they have a list of those who are off campus. Security WILL respond if they don’t have you on the off campus listing. Questions? Contact Dameon Day, x7500. DONATIONS NEEDED: Help Collington reach out to our neighbors who are less fortunate than we and who must turn to a food bank to feed themselves or their families. Right now the bank is in need of nutritious staples (such as canned chili, roast beef hash, tuna fish in small packets, peanut butter, and cereal). Please check sell-by dates for freshness of the food.

Our neighbors also seek bar soap, travel size shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes as well as deodorant and toilet paper. Your donations may be left in the baskets just across from the library. THANK YOU! Nadine Hathaway and Gretta Estey are coordinating this project. Please call them with any questions. ATTENTION BINGO PLAYERS: BINGO is on vacation! There will be no BINGO in July we will resume on Wednesday, August 1 in the Game Room. See you then! SIGHT & SOUND MOSES MOVIE TRIP: Bowie Regal Theater will show the Sight and Sound movie Moses on September 15 at 12:55PM. Collington will provide transportation for those who are interested. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at https://www.regmovies.com/checkout/258821523#/tickets Tickets will sell out for this performance, so please do not wait for until the last minute to purchase your tickets. NEW ART EXHIBIT: Have you contributed to the new art exhibit outside our library? Is there a story you can share about your furnished portrait? The RA Website would like to highlight the exhibit and share your story. Please send any anecdote to [email protected]. INTERIORS GROUP REQUEST: We have recently acquired two pieces of furniture --a walnut secretary and an oriental style break front-- and are looking for items to accessorize them. If you have any sets of books, book-ends, oriental style vases, plates, figurines or other art objects that you would like to donate for the enjoyment and beauty of the community, contact Ruth Schrock, x7296. ANNAPOLIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: Highlights of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra's season that we have Collington transportation for are: George Gershwin's An American in Paris; Maurice Ravel's Concerto for Piano {Left Hand}, Pascal Rogé, soloist on October 6;

Collington’s Strategic Journey Here, as well as in other mediums, you will find regular updates on our journey in implementing our Strategic Plan. Each week there will be info in this column and in order to further ensure our community sees this important information, we will repeat the updates from time to time. -Collington Board Strategic Planning Committee Update on Strategic Plan Implementation – Friday, July 20, 2018

A part of our strategic journey includes being good stewards of our resources in every sense of the word…Financial, Human, Environmental, etc. In support of GOAL THREE: STEWARD OUR RESOURCES TO PROVIDE EXCELLENCE IN THE COLLINGTON EXPERIENCE, we are beginning implementation of an LED light bulb replacement program.

This initiative was spearheaded many months ago by the Collington RA Sustainability Committee and initially led to LED bulbs, which save a great deal of energy (i.e. money), being installed in all the covered walkways. This not only is a way of conserving financial and environmental resources but it also provides better quality lighting. Beginning, Wednesday, July 25, 2018, teams of individuals contracted and overseen by Collington Facilities staff will begin installing LED light bulbs in all public/common area fixtures in the building. Additionally, LED light bulbs will be installed in the fixtures within all residential homes. This does not include lamps or other lighting that is resident owned but instead encompasses the light fixtures in the ceiling and other permanent fixtures. You will receive a voicemail and/or email when bulb installation is going to begin in your cluster. As the rollout begins will continue to communicate with you our progress. So, stay tuned!
