WORD OF THE WEEK...

Panegyric [pan-i-jir-ik, -jahy-rik] noun

A lofty oration or writing in praise of a person or thing; eulogy. Formal or elaborate praise.

EXAMPLES

“And I hope this little panegyric will not be offensive to their ears, since it has the advantage of being only designed for themselves.” - Johnathan Swift, A Tale of a Tub, 1704

“Then had come Lord Henry Wotton with his strange panegyric on youth, his terri-ble warning of its brevity.” - Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891

The spontaneous outpouring of every heart in the community is the highest panegyric that can be offered to the de-parted.

DID YOU KNOW?

The word panegyric is derived from the

Greek πανηγυρικός (panēgurikós) meaning

“solemn assembly.” It entered the English

language at the end of the 1500’s.

An 84-year-old Washington state woman will soon hold her 1953 university class ring, lost six decades ago, after it was found in a dried-up lake in West Texas. Elizabeth Clark lost her Howard Payne University class ring in 1954 after she and her future husband went for a picnic and waded into the water. After years of drought, the ring was found in the lake bed. Someone from the school’s alumni association retrieved the ring and was able to identify it from the initials - AEL for Addie Elizabeth Little - inside the band. “I worked hard for that ring,” Eliza-beth said. “I’m grateful it was found and that it’s in such good shape!”

TRAVEL PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Mount Fuji, Honshu Island, Japan - Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Ja-pan at 12,389 feet. Once an active strato-volcano (a conical volcano built up by many, many layers of hardned lava, tephra, pumice and volcanic ash), Mount Fuji last erupted in 1707. Just sixty miles south-west of Tokyo, Mount Fuji has been an inspiration to poets and artists alike for centuries; the site has also been the destination for pilgrimages for centu-ries. The origin of the name Fuji is un-clear; some texts from the 10th century claim the name comes from the kanji for

“immortal” (不死, fushi, fuji) while others

argue it originates from 不二, meaning

“not” + “two” or “without equal. ”

THE SUGGESTION BOX…

This week our only suggestion is that for an entertainment change of pace we should consider a Magic Act and maybe a comedy show with Bucky Lewis. Now I don’t want to pre-judge a show I haven’t seen --- but I seem to remember hearing reports that Bucky’s shows are not exactly family ori-ented………. Suggestions are always wel-come because they help us to keep things fresh. Activity programs are an ongoing balancing act between the relative comfort of the tried and true --- and the relative ex-citement of trying something new. We need both --- and any suggestions that you have are very much appreciated!

THIS AND THAT………..

I read the front page of this edition of the Newsletter a little too quickly and thought that it said ‘Antique & Car Show’ and saw the photo of Barbara and Ted along with the car and thought how appropriate to cap-ture two antiques and a car all in one shot! I know that Ted likes the car shows because it is one of the few times he is surrounded by things older than he is. What are you supposed to do if you sud-denly find yourself attacked by a bunch of clowns? Go for the Juggler! What does a Pirate pay to have his ears pierced? A buck-an-ear of course!

CLOSING NOTES THIS AND THAT……….. (Cont.)

I will try contain myself and not subject you to any more such childish humor --- By the looks of it you had another wonderful car show. I’ve helped out now with 4 dif-ferent shows (MBCC, the Veteran’s Home, Forest View and Mountain View’s) and I have found there to be some things in com-mon. Looking at these mechanical marvels from the past just make us smile. We can appreciate the beauty of these cars in ways we never did when we new them to be new. Then they were one of many -- now they are a well preserved example. More important though are the memories they never fail to bring back. Loading the wagon for the trips to the beach, the first dates, the trips to the drive-in movies, bringing the baby home from the hospital ---- just seeing those cars brings memories flooding back. And there is something else --- these guys and gals that own and restore these cars are just naturally passionate about their cars and they love to show them off and share them with others! They are a fun group of people to be around! What’s a Pirates favorite letter of the alpha-bet? You would think it would be RRRRRRR but it is the C he loves the best! When are the baby Osprey likely to take flight? And what names will they have when they do? Until next week -----------
