Independence Day or Fourth of July is a federal holiday here in the United States and commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776 (fun fact: most signers of the Declaration of Independence actually signed the document on August 2nd, 1776 - only two people signed on the Fourth of July). It is interesting to note that the Continental Congress decided to declare independence from the United Kingdom on July 2nd, 1776, which is why John Adams is quoted as having said: “The Second Day of July 1776 will be the most memorable Epocha in the History of America. It ought to be sol emnized with pomp and parade, with shews, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forever more.” Independence Day is the National Day of the United States and is com-monly associated with fireworks, pa-rades, barbecues, sports events and picnics.

JOKE OF THE WEEK...

ANNIVERSARIES FOR...

Worried because they hadn’t heard anything for days from the widow in the neighboring apartment, Mrs. Silver said to her son, “Timmy, would you please go next door and see how old, Mrs. Kirkland is doing?” Timmy re-turned a few moments later. “Well,” asked Mrs. Silver, “is she all right?” Timmy laughed and said “Oh, she’s fine Ma. Except I think she’s angry with you.” “At me?” Timmy’s mother ex-claimed. “What for?” Timmy burst out laughing: “She said that it’s none of your business how old she is!”

WORD OF THE WEEK...

Pernicious [pur-nish-us] adjective

Highly injurious; deadly; destructive; exceedingly harmful

EXAMPLES

Due to the presence of the toxin Abrin, the Rosary Pea is quite pernicious to humans when ingested. Despite this, the plant’s colorful seeds are often used in jewelry making and per-cussion instruments.

The popular children often formed cliques whose influence could, at times, be quite perni-cious to those excluded from their activities.

Any form of prejudice - racism, sexism, ableism and ageism - should be condemned be-cause their effects are pernicious.

DID YOU KNOW?

The word pernicious comes from

the Latin perniciosus, meaning

“destruction, disaster or ruin” - the

prefix per means “through or thor-

oughly” and is combined with nex

or nec, which means “violent

death” (think: necō, necāre - the

Latin verb “to kill, to murder from

which we derive words like

“noxious”).

An old brown beer bottle had been bob-bing in the Baltic Sea for 101 years before fisherman Konrad Fischer caught it in his net. Richard Platz, who was 20 years old when he set the bottle adrift in 1913, rolled up a postcard with two loose stamps and requested that a letter be sent to him in Berlin. The bottle and con-tents went on display at the maritime museum in Hamburg this year while a lo-cal genealogical researcher traced the man’s family tree to Angela Erdmann, Richard’s Granddaughter. Angela, who was born six years after Richard died, was finally able to learn more about her Grandfather.

TRAVEL PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Mosque of Muhammad Ali (Alabaster Mosque), Cairo, Egypt - Built between 1830 and 1848, this Ottoman Mosque is the largest to be constructed in the first half of the 19th century. The Mosque was built in memory of Tusun Pasha, Muham-mad Ali’s oldest son, who died in 1816. The Mosque is so large it is one of the first fea-tures to be seen when approaching Cairo, no matter the direction one is traveling in. The Mosque was built with a central dome surrounded by four small, semicircular domes and stands 170 feet tall, although the elegant minarets with conical caps situ-ated on the western side of the building rise to 269 feet.

THE SUGGESTION BOX…

This week we had two suggestions ---- the first to consider turning down the air condi-tioning in order to save energy. For any who might be confused --- turning down air con-ditioning means increasing the temperature and not decreasing it! The challenge in a large building is ‘balancing’ the air flows so that temperature is uniform throughout the building. This is no small job because unlike at home --- MBCC needs to bring in quite a bit of outside air in order to keep the envi-ronment health. In the summer this means chilling the hot outside air and in winter warming the incoming cold air.

The second was a suggestion that the garage floor is in need of a good sweeping. This is something that sounds easy but really is not. It is easy if there are no cars in there -- but it is quite a challenge to clean an occupied area without creating a bunch of dirty cars. There are ways including use of a vacuum which minimizes but does not eliminate cre-ating air borne dust -- and there are sweep-ing compounds that can be used along with water to again reduce dust but not eliminate it. The truth is that a really good cleaning can only happen if we can get all the cars out of there for a day or so.

THIS AND THAT………..

I hope you had a great 4th of July -- in spite of the weather on Friday. It certainly forced changes in a lot of plans --- but the great weather that followed for the rest of the weekend made up for a lot of the disap-pointment!

CLOSING NOTES THIS AND THAT……….. (Cont.)

AN OSPREY UPDATE: Carolyn has heard back from Iain MacLeod - the Executive Di-rector of the Squam Lakes Science Center -- who reports that there are 3 Chicks up there and all are looking well! That is of course great news --- but I wonder how he does this checking. I think I can safely assume that Iain isn’t climbing the cell phone tower. I hadn’t heard that he had installed a camera -- but I do wonder if he uses one of those new remote controlled helicopter drones with a camera attached to take a peek? They are now being used to get photos of properties that would otherwise have been either difficult --- or very expense to get. Special thanks to Carolyn for continuing to be MBCC’s contact person with Iain. Last week I returned to Boy Scout Camp for one night to help out my son’s troop. I don’t know where they got those camp cots from but I have to believe it was from some-one with a very strange sense of humor! I do want to report how uplifting it is to see so many young people (over 300 last week) who were polite, considerate and so very en-ergetic. I know that there is good reason to have concerns about our future generations --- but there is also some good reasons to be optimistic. I got to get a glimpse of that last week. I’m glad to see the car show will be back this Thursday --- Let’s hope for great weather!
