    The word Professional

    has a special ring to it. Itpromises something thatis always a step ahead.It denotes a standard of excellence to be pursuedfor its own sake. For years Ihave seen men and womenput their lives on the line,not only for their country,but for their own pride aswell. A true professional is

    a seeker a leader. One of my favorite quotes is: Butearnestly desire the highergifts and I will show you amore excellent way.

    We are Volunteer Professionals, we dont receive a pay-check every month for our hard work; we give of our time,our money, and sometimes our lives, in support of the threemissions of CAP. You have every right to be proud of yourachievements so far in CAP. However, I caution you not to

    tarry too long at this place. Remember, a Civil Air Patrolcareer is a Movement not a Condition, a Voyage andnot a Harbor.

    We all set goals for ourselves and you may be tempted to say,Hey this is it: Im taking it easy for a while. Remember,Desire the higher gifts and I will show you a more excel-lent way.

    Grant Teaff was the head coach of Baylor University from972 to 992 and was inducted into the College Football Hallof Fame in 200 . He spoke of his ability to inspire loyaltyfrom his players and coaches. He said, When I first took the

    job at Baylor I had a call from a very outstanding high schoolcoach in the state of Texas who said he wanted to go to workfor me. I asked if he realized Baylor had won three games inthree years. He said, I believe in you and I think you can get

    trees to stop flooding around thearea, cadets and senior memberstook down burned trees on dif-ficult terrain, hammered tarpsover the trees, then shoveled dirtonto the tarps.

    It was a long and physically tir-ing day for everyone involved,they had their faces coveredin ash by the end of the day. Itwas an experience that taughtall the cadets the core value of volunteer service, and the valueof getting down and dirty toget the job done.

    Civil Air Patrol members fromseveral squadrons in Coloradohad an exciting and very hard-working day at Eagle Lake CampsSeptember 22, 20 2. Cadets andsenior members provided disasterrelief for the camp located outsideColorado Springs.

    The Waldo Canyon Fire in June20 2 destroyed a significant por-tion of land in central Colorado,the Rocky Mountains and PikeNational Forest. Thankfully,the fires didnt burn Eagle LakeCamps, but they did burn allaround it, almost making a com-plete circle around the camp.Since there were no more healthy

    The morning of September th,20 2 began with a natural RockyMountain flavor of crispness asdawn rose above the horizon.Our squadron van was ready forboarding by cadets and seniormembers eager to assist withthe days activities honoring thebrave men and women from oneof our nations most difficult

    catastrophes. The governorsrequest for Civil Air Patrol pres-ence was indeed an honor and wewere grateful to serve.

    Arriving at Civic Center Parkin downtown Denver, Coloradoit was apparent that the daywould be filled with feelingsof gratitude, sorrow, and pride.Our camaraderie was illustrated

    as three other squadrons fromGroup joined our ranks in thepark. Our Commander endearedthe expectations for the day andshared the mood that wouldbe encompassing our actions;how we would demonstrate ourprofessionalism on this sol-emn field of remembrance.     and Colorado Adjutant General,Major General Michael Edwardsfor our willingness to support andperform our duties.

    an Army color guard solemnlyunfolded our nations flag andplaced it over the huge twistedmetal remnant as a sign thatour country will not forget thetragedy of September th. Twolarge cranes towered up above thespeakers stage where everyonewithin the vicinity of the parkcould observe Old Glory and theColorado State Flag in tandem.

    We had the honor to serve withlaw enforcement, fire departmentunits, and military honor guardsby guarding the semi-trailer withthe large metal remain from oneof the World Trade Center build-ings and Fire Engine No. 4 (itscrew lost while helping othersexit the buildings). Throughout

    the day we would exchangeduties to allow each CAP memberto experience this honor. Cadetsoutlined the procession of sev-eral hundred law enforcement,firefighters, U.S. military, andVeteran-related organizations,including Gold Star Mothers,Wounded Warriors, and PurpleHeart recipients, to name a few.

    D u r i n g t h e C o l o r a d oRemembrance for the WorldTrade victims and families, Gov.Hickenlooper, Denver MayorMichael Hancock, DenverBroncos General Manager, JohnElway, and The CELL owner andevent sponsor, Larry Mizel, eachspoke about the tragedies andtriumphs that have evolved from

    the acts of 9- -200 , especiallythose heroic acts of the firstresponders. The speakers alsorecognized those in attendanceand induced a continuance of pride and support for our men and

    women first responders, domesti-cally, and our military in foreignlands. Each speaker encouragedthe attendees to never forget thebrave and courageous firefight-ers, law enforcement officers,and our sons, daughters, fathers,and mothers serving in our U.S.military to maintain a free andsafe nation for its citizens.

    With the completion of our escortduties, crowd support, guardduties, and flag folding duties,among the many other tasksrequested from event staff; theGovernor paid special homageto each Civil Air Patrol memberfor their service during the event.Many positive comments weregiven to the cadets on theirconduct. The four squadrons that

    participated in this annual eventwere: Valkyrie Cadet, MustangCadet, Dakota Ridge Composite,Mile High Cadet; Group seniormembers from the Denver metroarea were also present.

    was in a state of shock. Just about the time I finallygot my face straight and was ready to turn aroundand face him I heard two shots. Bam! Bam! Billyelled, I got two of his cows. Now lets get the hellout of here. Thats Loyalty. I dont expect anyoneto go out and shoot cows or mules to show loyalty,but I do expect each and every one of us to be loyalto the Colorado Wing and Civil Air Patrol.

    On the subject of money, we are under the continu-ing resolution which means the budget has not beenapproved therefore, funds for training, orientationrides, glider operations, and consolidated mainte-nance will be coming in a little at a time. In October20 2 we received $ ,9 2.00 for glider operations,$5,799.00 for training, $3,8 2.00 for orientationrides, and $ ,656.00 for consolidated maintenance.I expect we will receive funds at or below our FY 2limit. It is important we use the funds as effectivelyas possible.

    Now that we are entering the winter months I encour-age you to be conscious of your surroundings andprepare for the snow, ice, and cold temperatures.

    Grant Teaff cited an example of this loyalty. Headmitted he was the most discouraged coach inAmerica when his first Baylor team went 2 and 9and failed to win a conference game. He said inthe middle of the winter Bill Young came to hisoffice, reminded him that he hadnt had a day off in 9 months and said the staff was worried abouthis health. After an extended argument Youngconvinced Teaff that he would benefit greatly froma day in the outdoors, maybe on a brief huntingtrip. Teaff recalled that when he had first arrived atBaylor a rancher near Meridian, Texas, had issuedan open invitation to him to hunt on his spread. Sothe two coaches drove out into the country the nextday, pulled up to the house, to seek the rancherspermission. He met an enthusiastic greeting. Coach,you can come here any time you want to, the ranchersaid. I know youve had a tough year but youregoing to win. I believe in you and your program. Butcould I ask you one favor? That old mule over thereby the barn is sick, old and diseased. Hes been withme 25 years and I love him like a member of myfamily. But hes suffering and must be destroyed.Would you shoot that mule for me? I didnt reallywant to do it, Teaff recalled. But he had been sogracious I said I would. When I walked back to thecar where Bill Young was waiting, a strange impulsecame over me. I set my jaw and let my lower lipquiver just a bit and I squinted my eyes as I openedthe car door. Bill asked me what the matter was.I said that old man wont let us hunt. Bill, he saidsome things I cant believe. He said I was the sorriestfootball coach in the nation and that our offensiveline couldnt pop a paper sack. He said BaylorUniversity was the sorriest school in the country,academically. Well Im sick of that kind of talk andof all the abuse weve been taking. You see that oldmule over there. I reached down and pulled up therifle and slapped a slug in it. Bill just turned ashen.I took careful aim and dropped that old mule withone shot. I couldnt bear to look at Bill; I knew he

    Last time I promised I would begin to explore the core valuesof CAP. Using the acronym that Ch Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Johnson, presently the Wyoming Wing Chaplain, teaches, thediscussion should be about IVER: Integrity, Volunteer Service,Excellence, and Respect. However, this discussion will be puton hold for this issue. Several practices have come to light which should be addressed.

    As you dust off your copy of CAPR 52- 6, Cadet Program Management, you are well aware thatthe Character Development portion of the program is one of five pillars upon which the CadetProgram stands. It is not optional. It must be managed with high standards as regards participation,leadership, and materials.

    Lets start with participation. Each time a cadet promotes, the squadron commander or his / herrepresentative certifies that said cadet has attended at least one Character Development session.Without this session, the cadet cannot promote. In several squadrons, cadet staff use the CharacterDevelopment time for a staff meeting. This not only means they are not participating and helpingguide the less senior cadets, it sends a bad leadership message that Character Development doesntmatter once you are in command. Also, many squadrons will populate E-Services with CharacterDevelopment participation using the weekly attendance sheet, thus giving credit for a session which,in fact, the staff did not attend. This is an integrity issue.

    This brings up leadership, both on the cadet and senior side. As mentioned above, all cadets needto be at the session, staff included. On the senior side, there are three people who may facilitate theCharacter Development session, a chaplain, a Character Development Instructor, and the SquadronCommander. There is no provision in CAP 52- 6 for anyone else to facilitate. If the squadron com-mander does delegate this responsibility, we can question the promotion of cadets in the squadron,for the squadron is not following CAPR 52- 6.

    Finally comes the materials. Ive seen outstanding work done at the unit level by concerned seniormembers who are not a CDI, chaplain, or squadron commander. They have drawn in movies,magazine articles, and other resources. Unfortunately, CAPR 52- 6 is clear, we can only use thematerials listed at http://www.capmembers.com/character. The only Character Development sessionwhich does not use the resources from this site are the sessions taught at the Cadet Encampment.

    In summary, every cadet who is present for a meeting should be present at the CD session. Onlya chaplain, CDI, or squadron commander should facilitate, though for certain cadet promotionsa cadet may need to lead a session. Finally, only materials from http://www.capmembers.com/character should be used. In meeting these requirements, we can promote our cadets withintegrity and excellence.

    Cadets say this cadet oath on a regular basis dur-ing their cadet career. On Saturday, September8th cadets from groups , 2, & 3 fulfilled a por-tion of this oath by participating in the Group

    Cadet Conference.The Group Cadet Conference was an ideabirthed during the planning of the Colorado WingConference in April of this year. Cadets expressedthe desire to have a conference dedicated solely tothemput on by cadets, for cadets. Cadet ColonelCaitie Graham volunteered to plan the activity,and presented a plan to the Group Commander,Lieutenant Colonel Bill Aceves, to receiveapproval. It was approved, and Cadet Colonel

    Graham worked diligently over the next fewmonths to plan the Group Cadet Conference.

    I pledge to serve faithfully in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program and that I will attend meetings regularly, participate actively in unit activities, obey my officers, wear my uniform properly and advance my education and training rapidly to prepare myself to be of service

    During the conference, cadetsgot to participate in many activi-ties. There were great hands-onactivities like the PhysicalTraining Competition; wherecadets get the opportunity to dotheir very best in push-up, curl-ups, sit-and-reach, shuttle run,and the mile run.     Parker Cadet Squadron Cadet Major Chase Peterswas recognized at the Civil Air Patrol NationalConference in Baltimore MD, for first place in theDrug Demand Reduction (DDR) national speechcompetition. The Drug Demand Reduction programincludes education and training, school programs andcommunity outreach activities designated to assistits members in making a difference in this world byhelping communities understand the effects drugscan have in their lives and community.

    The contest is the first of its kind for the DDRprogram, the speech given by this young man hasset the standard of what this program will cometo expect in years to come. Colorado Wing DDROfficer First Lieutenant John Conelly stated thespeech was compelling, attention getting andwas written in a way to keep the attention of bothcadets and seniors alike. Representing the Rocky

    Mountain Region, Cadet Maj. Peters gave thewinning speech at the Civil Air Patrol NationalConference. The DDR team that evaluated thespeeches for the competition commented, Thatout of a possible 300 points, the winning speechreceived a 299. The speech needed to be three tofive minutes long and cover some aspects of drugsor addictions and incorporate the DDR program andCivil Air Patrol. A DVD and written submissionwere required. The speech was graded on content,delivery, appearance, memorization along with itscontent reflecting on Civil Air Patrol. The messagegiven in this speech was found to be beneficial to allmembers of Civil Air Patrol and those considering

    joining Civil air Patrol.

    The National DDR staff will be adding this speechto the national web site and making it available toall squadrons to aide in the training and recruitmentboth of new members and current members to

    standing up for the no I represent. The answer to thisproblem lies in the very fabric of what are countryis founded on. UNITED WE STAND DIVIDEDWE FALL. The early colonials knew that they werebeing oppressed and they knew that individually theywould be picked off. But, united under one cause,they would not fall. There are numerous actions onemight choose to take in order to unite against a prob-lem so wide spread as drugs. One of the actions that

    I found is in the Civil Air Patrol. The Civil Air Patrolis tasked with four primary missions, these are;Aerospace education, Cadet Programs, EmergencyServices and Homeland Security. It is easy to seehow two of these missions directly involve savinglives. However, under cadet programs, there is aprogram called DDR Drug, Demand, Reductionprogram. This program is chartered with theresponsibility to make CAP a drug free environmentthat promotes and supports education, communityevolvement, social responsibility and respect for

    individuals. This program also saves lives. It is amessage from a group of people who have united tofight off those who would through the use of drugsattack our friends, family, classmates. It is an activestance through the use of DDR materials that teachabout drug use, smoking and drinking, that not onlyteaches others to say no, but empowers them to sharethe information and actively pursue a solution ratherthan just saying no. These men and woman in CivilAir Patrol, who utilizes this material and activelyshares the message save lives everyday, without

    even knowing. The chains of addiction in drugs,alcohol and smoking can not only be broken throughyour active participation in the DDR program, butmight just save the life of the one you least expect.So, dont just say no to drugs, become part of thesolution and not part of the problem. Join Civil AirPatrol and support the Drug Demand Reductionprogram and save a life.

    How many of you have seen this symbol before?(Just say no to drugs ) Have you ever said no todrugs? Have you ever been asked again? Here inthe lies the problem!

    Saying no to drugs is not the solution! Yes, youheard me correctly. Saying no to drugs is not thesolution! It is a passive response to a questionthat requires action .

    What exactly do I mean by this? My dad has a sayingthat he uses quite regularly and it goes somethinglike this, There are three frogs on a log, one decidesto get off, how many are left? Lets repeat thatone more time. There are three frogs on a log, onedecides to get off, and how many are left? If youanswered two, that is incorrect. The correct answeris three. You see, one decided to get off, but decidingsomething and doing something are two separatethings. Once something is decided, action must thenbe taken on it, or nothing is gained. That is exactlywhy just saying no to drugs, in and of itself doesnot and will not work. It simply shifts the problemsomeplace else. That is why most people who areoffered drugs, have been offered drugs more thanonce. The passive response of just saying no, onlydelays the need to say no again. So, what exactlydoes this mean? It means that you cannot only justsay no to drugs. You must find an active way toproject that message. Otherwise the drugs dont goaway. They shift to someone not strong enough tosay no. Let me give you an example of an incidentthat happened in my life. Drugs are very prevalentin my school and kids are frequently asked if theywant drugs. The first time I was asked, I just saidno. They just went and asked someone else. Whenasked again I not only said no, I explained to themif I saw them asking anyone else I would turn themin for dealing drugs. I have not seen them askingaround me anymore. Now they understand that I willnot be passive. I will take an active involvement in

    Ending With a Bang

    A looming cloud of black smoke greeted us asSquadron 2 walked out of Mitchell Hall. The windwas blowing so strongly that hats were blowing off and of course, I was the one to sprint after them. Theday was June 26, 20 2 and I was at the 20 2 ColoradoWing Summer Encampment which takes place at theprep school for the Air Force Academy.

    As most of you know the encampment was evacu-ated because of the Waldo Canyon Fire, that is whythere was a cloud of black smoke. The fire hadbeen on all of the staffs minds since Saturday. AsSquadron 2 was loaded into the buses everyonehad the sickening feeling that we were going to beevacuated. When the bus arrived at the prep schoolthere were both a fire truck and an ambulance pullingaway. The sky was orange and black. We steppedoff the bus and were told that one minute was all wehad to gather anything that we could not live without.

    Most of the staff and cadets who were injured wereloaded into the private cars and smaller CAP vans.My battle buddy and I were shoved into a carbecause she had asthma. As we drove throughthe city the column of smoke seemed to get big-ger and then smaller. We arrived at the ColoradoWing headquarters at Peterson Air Force Baseto find that Squadron 3 had already arrived butSquadron had not. There were many cadetswho were having trouble breathing because of the smoke and some were worried about family

    that lived in the Colorado Springs area.Cell phones flew from person to person as cadetschecked in on their families. Many of the staff became temporary medics to help those with anxietyor asthma attacks. I remember one cadet having aserious stomachache and being so scared that hisfamily had been evacuated. Sitting with him I hadto practically force him to drink Gatorade. We wereloaded into the buses once again, going to the build-

    ing where the Colorado Springs Cadet Squadronmeets at Peterson Air Force base. The entire wingthen fell into formation so that there was 00%accountability of all cadets and senior members.

    As night fell the sky turned orange to the south asparts of Colorado Springs burned. One parent broughtMcDonalds mini burgers to the staff while we waitedfor instructions. I have to say that was perhaps thebest burger I have ever had in my life. The announce-ment was made that encampment was over. As thesquadron and flight staff made their last speeches Iwas reminded of why I had come to encampmentagain. To see basics learn what it is to be a cadet andto watch and help them to become a team. There isone picture that was posted on the wing website thatsums the night up, a group of blurred cadets celebrat-ing that they had passed encampment. There weremany people that I talked to a few weeks later thatsaid that the basic cadets did not have enough timeto learn what they were supposed to and they did notdeserve to graduate. But what I saw that night mostcertainly justifies it. It also made me proud to be aCAP cadet and proud that I was able help in someway, to train those cadets and to help them to be proudof what they had done even if it was only a four dayencampment which ended with a bang.

    Adams County Cadet Squadron held its first ever awards ceremony onOctober 30, 20 2 at the Brighton Heritage Academy in Brighton, Colorado.The unit was charted November 4, 20 . A full house of cadets, family,friends and guests were in attendance. Colorado Wing Commander, ColonelEarl Sherwin, presided over a change of command ceremony appointingCadet Captain Chad LaLiberte as the new Cadet Commander. LaLiberteidentified his Deputy Commander as Cadet Technical Sergeant Dylan Sena

    Pueblo, ColoradoNothing can bemore frightening to a small child thanlosing a parent in a large crowd, and theColorado State Fair hosts some of thelargest crowds in southern Colorado.Fortunately for families visiting thestate fair, the Pueblo Eagles CompositeSquadron is also in the crowd, helpingto reunite children with their parents.

    For the past ten years, squadronmembers have donated thousandsof hours of their time to operate theLost Child Center at the ColoradoState Fairgrounds. In partnership withthe State Fair Security Office, thePueblo Eagles operate a base stationin the center of the fairgrounds, wheremembers handle radio and phone callsfrom security and law enforcementpersonnel who are contacted about

    missing children (or parents!). Then the squadronsearch teams spring into action, flooding the lastknown area with orange shirts and hats, cadets andsenior members, conducting a hasty search for the

    missing party. The teams are highly effective atlocating missing children or parents, and reunitingthese families with only a few tears shed by all par-ties. Teams have also helped locate missing at-risk

    The partnership frees up law enforce-ment personnel and security employeesto perform their primary duties, whilegiving members of the squadron a

    great way to help their community andpractice search and rescue skills in aunique environment. Perhaps the great-est tribute to the squadrons searcherscan be heard as parents walk past theorange shirts with their children, andtell them, Now, if you get lost, you lookfor someone wearing these shirts andhats! They will come save you!

One presentation coveredCAP Public Affairs Regulations (CAPR- 90- ) anddiscussed the Public Affairs 20 Specialty Trackincluding whats required to earn the Technicianrating. The next session covered social networking.With todays technology driven world, CAP has begunto embrace social networking as a tool for communityoutreach. She presented many ideas for squadrons toutilize Face Book, Twitter and how to develop asquadron web site. Internet safety was discussed in

    detail, many questions were asked by attendees.Major Thompson next discussed submissions toPeaks & Planes. She led this session with a slideshow detailing photography. She has extensiveexperience in this field having spent more than tenyears as a professional photographer.

    Colorado Wing Assistant PAO, Captain JosephNuvolini led the final session- posting photos andvideos to the web.

    Attendees were able to meet their colleagues and putfaces to names. The annual PA seminar was a greatway for everyone to network and build a morecohesive Wing public affairs team. A complimentarylunch was provided and CAP promotional gifts weregiven to participants which made for a fun, informa-tive and successful event.     Alamosa, COCivil Air Patrol (CAP) has threemissions, Cadet Programs, Aerospace Education andEmergency Services. Training for a real life eventis essential for a rapid, controlled, and organizedresponse. The weekend of August 0- , 20 2 theHeart of the Rockies Composite Squadron, based inthe San Luis Valley, had six cadets and five seniormembers roaming the woods. The scenario was adowned airplane. They were tasked to find victims,

    perform first aid, and navigate other rescuers to thecrash site.

    They learned how to use compasses and Quadranglemaps in a search for victims when given coordinatesfrom other rescuers. They trained extensively ingiving compass coordinates to the second wave of rescuers. The cadets received hands on training withemergency frequency radios and how to set up a safearea for helicopter flight for an air lift.

    They practiced initial first aid for victims of a planecrash that included amnesia, broken legs, and howto work with a diabetic in a high stress situation.The Senior Members worked closely with thecadets in teaching skills and support them throughthe activities.

    2. Cadets can attend other CAP activitiesonce they attend encampment. A couple of these events include GSAR School and allNCSAs (age permitting).

    3. Cadets can come back as staff. As staff,the cadets are the ones training the basics.From being staff, cadets develop theirleadership, communication, and drill skills.Unlike basic encampment, where cadetslearn how to work with fellow followers,staff learns how to work with fellow lead-ers. This skill learned as cadet staff can helpa cadet throughout their entire life.

    Although I only listed three reasons, there are many

    more. Ask any cadet who has attended an encamp-ment and they will all have their own reasons whycadets should go. However, I believe it is safe to saythat the top reason is that encampment is a cadetsmost valuable training experience in CAP.

    I encourage all of you who have not attended anencampment to seriously consider attending theKSWG encampment this winter or the COWGencampment this summer.

    With the Colorado Wing Summer Encampmenta few months ago, and the Kansas Wing WinterEncampment coming up, the word encampmentis around a lot. But what is an encampment?What do you do there? Why should cadets go?These are questions that cadets, especially newer

    cadets, think about.Basically, encampment is a cadets most valuabletraining experience in Civil Air Patrol (CAP). Atencampment, cadets learn teamwork, excellence,time management, and basic CAP drill and ceremo-nies, and customs and courtesies. The skills learnedat encampment help a cadet throughout his or hercadet career.

    At encampment, not only do cadets get to experiencethe basic activities at encampment such as barracks,meal time, and a dining-in or a dining-out, they alsoget to participate in many things some people canonly dream of doing. Some of these things includeusing a flight simulator, riding in a Blackhawk,attending a service at the cadet chapel at the USAir Force Academy and shooting a weapon at ashooting range.

    I believe cadets should go for many reasons, buthere are my top three reasons:

    . Cadets become better people. At encamp -ment, cadets learn qualities about them-selves that they did not even know theyhad. Cadets also learn about how muchstress they can handle. In addition, cadetsalso learn people skills and leadershipskills. As a flight, cadets need to not onlywork together, they also need to help oneanother.

    Have you ever dreamed of making your family sedanfly? Or maybe you dreamed of being the first toinvent a flying car. What many people dont realize,is that the dream is, and always was, a reality.

    It is imagined that a flying car is a new concept,but actually they have existed ever since the Wrightbrothers invented the airplane. The first record of a flying car was around 904 when a rival of theWright brothers, Glenn Curtiss, designed a large,three -winged car that never flew- just hopped.

    The first successful car flight was on March 2 ,937, when Waldo Watermans Arrowbile proved

    to the world that a car could actually fly. It wasnt ashort flight either, with the Arrowbile achievinga top speed of 2 mph!

    From 937 to 990, over 9 different models wereexperimented with and some flew and some didnt.Of all the flying cars that have been built, my favorite

    is the one pictured above, the flying Ford Pinto.It all began in 970, when Henry Smolinski, engi-neer and president of Advanced Vehicle EngineersCompany (AVE), presented his idea to the world. Hebelieved that a car could fly, and not just one variety,but many different varieties of cars. Smolinskistated, We intend to use the wings, the rear (pusher)engine mount, the twin tail booms and the control

    Although AVE will always be known for the fly-ing Pinto, Smolinskis original plan was to use aPontiac Firebird for the prototype, but that nevermaterialized.

    By 973, Smolinski was ready to show his finalproduct to the public. The people were surprised tofind, however, at the unveiling a plain, white and

    brown Pinto and not the sleek Firebird that wasoriginally mentioned.

    News reporter Mike Bird was quoted in his interviewwith vice president Hal Blake, Its fortunate thatHenry Ford got around to putting a selfstarter on hisautomobile. I wouldnt want to have to climb out at5,000 feet altitude and crank.

    The AVE Mizar, as it was to be called, could bedriven from your garage to the airport and attachedto the airframe in 45 seconds or 2 minutes if youare a slow person. Our plan, Smolinski stated,is to make the operation so simple that a womancan easily put the two systems together - or separatethem - without help. When the Pinto was backedup to the airframe, a self-aligning track guides it intoa locking position. The automobile and airframeare mated by four self-locking pins in the supportconnections. The flight controls and instruments areunited by an umbilical type connection.

    The engine used was a 235 horsepower AvcoLycoming 540 series similar to that used inthe Cessna Skymaster. It was available in 260and 300 horsepower versions as well. AVEclaimed the Mizar should be able to cruise at

    30 mph with a max speed of 70 mph. It wasequipped with a 93 gallon fuel tank and fuelconsumption was estimated at 3 gallons per hour.The 4,700 lb. aircraft was a mere 8.5 feet tall and hada wingspan of 38 feet and a total wing area of 202square feet. It had a total length of 28.5 feet. It hada passenger load factor of 400 lbs. and the cargoload factor was 360 lbs. The Mizar had a serviceceiling of 6,000 feet.

    The airplane engine was enough to get the aircraftoff the ground, but it was recommended that thecars engine was used as well to shorten the takeoff distance. In the air, the cars engine would be turnedoff. Once the vehicle was ready to land, the pilotwould touchdown on the rear wheels as gently aspossible then the four-wheel disc brakes would stopit in around 525 feet.

    Of course, not just anybody could use the AVEMizar- they would need a drivers license plus apilots license.

    When the Mizars $ million dollar developmentwas finished, 34 people put in an order for their ownmodel with the starting price at $ 8,300 or a fullyoptioned model at $28,900. That was expensiveback then, considering that a fully equipped Pintowas just under $4000 !

    At first glance, the Pintos interior looked just likethe day it came out of the factory, but take a closerlook and you will see two rudder pedals on the floor.

    Dont worry, they fold down when youre ready todrive the car. Then you will notice the customizeddash with an air speed indicator, rate of climbindicator, altimeter, directional gyro, fuel pressuregauge, throttle in the center console, flap switch,trim tab, and radio.

    Several flights were made over a three month periodand it was FAA approved. The AVE Mizar was actu-ally a driving, flying Ford Pinto! Plans were madeto produce 475 Mizars. Sadly, the dream was not tolast. Henry Smolinsky and vice-president Hal Blake,both 40 years old, were taking off from an airport inOxnard, California on September , 973, when theright wing strut collapsed, causing the wing to col-lapse as well. The airplane hit the top of a tree thenhit a truck parked on the street. When the aircrafthit the pickup, it burst into flames, and the owner of the truck was nearly involved in the accident. Bothof the pilots were killed in the crash.

    Today, the only memory left of the AVE Mizar isone Ford Pinto that had been customized, but neverhad the wings attached to it. That Pinto is nowprivately owned.

    Is that all there is to the flying car story? Certainlynot. Back in 2006, Terrafugia designed an airplanethat has folding wings and is street legal. It can bepurchased from their website for $279,000! In Aprilof 20 2, the International Flying Car Associationwas established to be the central resource center forinformation and communication between the flyingcar industry, news, networks, governments, andthose seeking further information worldwide.

    Someday flying cars might become as popular asautomobiles are today. Who knows? That day mightnot be far away.

    of the AZ&SP to ensure our displays and activitiesmet their requirements. On the cadet side, CadetStaff Sergeant Derek Lantis was very active inrecruiting and organizing cadets. Several activitieswere displays and hands-on activities included aremote control (R/C) flight simulator, MicrosoftsFlight Simulator, a Fit-For- Flight display, andParachuting Eggs, aka The Egg Drop.

    Ah the Egg Drop -- fun for everyone except theegg! This exercise kept cadets and participants busy.Take one unsuspecting egg and some cotton battingand put both in a plastic cup. Carefully arrangebatting all around the egg as a cushion. Attach aparachute (lightweight plastic shopping bag) to thecup with some string, fluff up the parachute and Leter drop! - from a height of about 5 feet. Take apeek inside the cotton batting cushion and see if

    Humpty Dumpty survived.Cadets first demonstrated how to construct theegg-saving device, and then participants builttheir own. With cameras rolling and enthusiasticchildren cheering for their egg, the excitement andentertaining activity drew crowds all day long. Notall eggs survived their parachute ride; however,several participants vowed to try again at home.Many children wanted to keep their egg, regardlessof condition. Fortunately parents were unanimous

    in letting us dispose of the broken eggs and keep thesurvivors so we could use them again and again.

    Besides the egg-drop station, cadets staffed CAPshands-on flight simulator stations. Participantswere given a quick demonstration on operating thesimulators, and then took over. The realism andchallenge of flying radio controlled aircraft or apiloted aircraft were brought to life for everyonewho tried their hand at the controls. There was nevera shortage of future pilots wanting to experience thethrill of flying. The Fit for Flight display drew agreat deal of attention from older youth and adults.CAP members explained Fit-for-Flight as muchmore than a slogan. The Fit for Flight presentationshowed how diet and exercise coupled with a healthylifestyle and education contribute to building aperson that can be a success in the aerospace field.

    paper airplanes, helped some youngsters build theirgliders, and talked extensively with potential CAPrecruits and parents. Other cadets assisted with theWings Over the Rockies Museum activities, helpedstaff nearby booths, or helped at the front gate. Whilesenior members were present to offer expert adviceand coordinate with other organizations for neces-sary resources, cadets took the lead on most activitiesand recruiting efforts. CAP members, especially thecadets, received praise from attendees and volunteercoordinators for their enthusiasm, professionalism,and motivation to positively influence youth to seekcareers in aviation and aerospace

    It was not all work and no play. Some cadetshad an opportunity during a lunch break to relax,watch the airshow demonstrations, or view otherdisplays. Within the AZ&SP hangar, cadets wereable to visit with representatives from LockheedMartin, Boeing, Redstone College, Federal AviationAdministration, watch the USAF Academy rocketdisplays, and even talk to future employers. Airshowperformers visited the AZ&SP; the F-22 Raptor pilotand support crew made a special effort to talk withCAP cadets. As the AZ&SP closed down a bit after2 PM, some volunteers spent the remainder of theafternoon enjoying the airshow. Special thanks toall the volunteers who made this years partnershipwith the Adventure Zone and Space Pavilion a hugesuccess. Heres looking to next year!

    Early airplanes had tan-dem cockpits where thestudent flew from the front cockpit and the instructorwas in the rear cockpit. Communication was difficultin the early airplanes and the instructor would tug onthe students shirt tail to get the students attention.The cutting of the shirt tail is a long standing tradi-tion that signifies that the flight instructor no longerneeds to guide the student in basic flight training.

    Fremont Starfire Cadet Squadron was chartered

    in 98 , the third squadron to exist in Canon City,Colorado since the 950s. The squadron has amembership of 9 senior members and 6 cadets.The squadron is active in Emergency Services,Aerospace Education and the CAP orientation flightprogram. Cadets fly a syllabus of five flights thatpresent the process of achieving the FAA privatepilot rating using Colorado Wing Cessna 82s.Twice a year the Colorado Wing Glider crew brings

    Thunder Mountain Composite SquadronVolunteers at Grand Junction Air Show

    The bi annual Grand Junction Air Show was heldSeptember 2 -23, 20 2 at the Grand JunctionRegional Airport. Thunder Mountain CompositeSquadron was asked to staff the inflatables areawhich included a space shuttle and an aircraft carrier.Thunder Mountain senior members volunteered tosit by one of Civil Air Patrols newest aircraft- aCessna G 000 glass cockpit. The two day showdrew over 30,000 spectators.

    The squadron helped before the show by building atemporary boundary fence used for parking. Severalcadets and senior members arrived at 6:00 AMSaturday morning to place perimeter fencing nearthe terminal after a FedEx plane was in the air.

    One of the spotlights in the show was the dem-onstration put on by the local Grand JunctionModeleers- a radio control aircraft club. The planeswere flown with awe inspiring skills. They werea crowd pleaser!!

    Both days included dazzling parachute shows, aerialraces, static displays of vintage and military aircraftand a turbine powered school bus! The versatileOsprey showed her prowess with an aerial maneu-vers which was followed by an incredible display byan F- 5. A favorite with the cadets was the Navys

    yellow, blue and white C- 30, affectionately knownas Fat Albert. She is part of the Blue Angels team.

    Front and center were the Navy Blue Angels. It isthe show everyone waited for! They did not disap-point with a 30 minute display showcasing intricatemaneuvers, inverted flying, rolls, high speed passesand the Diamond pattern.

    Members from CAP squadrons throughout Coloradovolunteered to provide disaster relief to a ColoradoSprings neighborhood that sustained damage by theWaldo Canyon Fire in June.

    Cadets and senior members participated in SandbagSaturday Disaster Relief in early September thatinvolved flooding prevention efforts for residentsof the Mountain Shadows neighborhood. Therewere 23 members volunteering the event, includ-ing five from Pueblo, Fremont, Boulder and MileHigh squadrons.

    The effort involved filling sandbags for the residents,who used them to protect their homes and propertyfrom potential flooding and mudslides caused by thedestruction of trees during the Waldo Canyon Firein June. For residents who were physically unableto move the heavy sandbags, the cadets and senior

    members carried the sandbags to their homes forthem. The members also put many of those sandbagsinto place around the residents homes.

    Grand Junction, COThunder Mountain CompositeSquadron, based at Grand Junction Regional Airport,enjoyed a busy summer beginning with the NationalCadet Competition (NCC) in Dayton, Ohio June20-23, 20 2. This area is steeped in aviation history.The Wright Brothers founded a cycle company andwent on to build, patent and fly the first successfulairplane. The National Cash Register Company,founded in 884, still exists today. Dayton is hometo Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the US AirForce Museum. Thunder Mountain color guard,along with Thompson Valley Drill team, representedthe Rocky Mountain Region at NCC. The fourmember team competed in the mile run, quiz bowl,indoor and outdoor presentation of the flag and awritten test. Training since last October, they placedsixth overall.

    The squadron went on several hikes in prepara-tion for a Pikes Peak 4ner hike in July. The first;

    held its first ever Airport 5K run. SecondLieutenant Kirk Gustfason placed thesquadron airplane on the runway cross-over where a water station was mannedby the color guard cadets. This was awonderful way for the public to see CivilAir Patrol.

    Senior members participated in the AirForce search & rescue evaluation of the Colorado Wing in June. They alsolent a hand either on the radios or in theair with two search and rescue train-ing exercises throughout the summer.The valuable training exercises aredesigned to imitate real life situationsto further knowledge and capabilityand squadron readiness.

    July 3- 5 found Thunder Mountainand Montrose Composite Squadronvolunteering at the Rifle Air Showheld at the Garfield Regional Airport inRifle, Colorado. Led by First LieutenantTammy Mattics, Group IV O Flightcoordinator, and First Lieutenant ReneJones, several cadets earned servicehours manning the inflatables.

    In August Thunder Mountain wasinvited by the Palisade Lions Club tohelp at their annual Pancake Breakfast.This breakfast coincides with the Palisade PeachFestival and parade. They served over ,000 hungrypeople! The squadron helped set up, serve food andrefreshments, sliced peaches and take it all down atthe end.

    Close to the end of summer Thunder Mountainheld an annual Field Training Exercise. Theweekend of September 8 & 9 found the squadronatop the Colorado National Monument, outsideGrand Junction. Proper radio use, Orienteering andastronomy were the main topics for 20 2. Fifteencadets and five senior members participated. MajorDenise Thompson led the cadets on a six-mile hikethrough Monument Canyon. Starting at the CokeOven trailhead, this takes the hiker down to the can-yon floor, past two iconic formations, The KissingCouple and Independence Monument. After the hike

    an Air Force Reservist presented an Orienteeringclass. She explained what a topographic map is, howto pin point your location on the map using naturalformations in the environment.

    The cadets thoroughly enjoyed first hand astronomywith Major Rick Peterson, Group IV Commander. Hebrought an 8 telescope and pointed out many thingsin the night sky. The evening was beautifully clear.

    The Milky Way was visible, Saturn, a Red Dwarf star,many satellites and a few shooting stars.

    This busy summer was a testament to Civil AirPatrol core values- volunteer service, excellence,respect and integrity. Each and every member of the squadron, throughout each event, upheld eachvalue to its fullest extent. That is all any commandercould ask for.
