Colossal Media Group 2009 annual portfolioTRANSCRIPT
The past twelve months have been extremely exciting forColossal. We completed our first job overseas which brought us to Austria. The job had us painting a large public ad for climate change awareness. Back in the U.S we expanded our permanent inventory to 18 marketsand set up an in-house acquisitions department givingus the capability to scout custom locations anywhere ata moments notice.
Notable projects included a series of large-scale walls for the elusive British artist Banksy, huge video game characters for Gears of War in Soho, and throwing a raucous paint party in our Brooklyn warehouse. We even turned Diesel’s headquarters into a giant cheeseburger!

Hand painted wallscapes are one of the most mem-orable forms of outdoor advertising available. Our painters always draw a crowd when in production, as each wall becomes a live art installation. People stop and take photos, blog about it, and tell their friends— a great authentic and viral way to inte-grate your brand into any neighborhood!

STREET LEVEL WALLS
Our street level wallscapes are located in trendy and creative neighborhoods in major markets throughout the country. By being at “eye-level,” they draw the public into the production process and can utilize and incorporate each neighborhood’s unique aesthetic into their location. These smaller gems are an excellent way for consumers to “discover” new brands. These murals are accepted by local residents more so than traditional advertising structures because they fit into the urban landscape and require a level of personal touch and artistry often overlooked in the industry. Colossal Media’s street level neighborhood murals are the foundation to Colossal’s ability to generate a buzz around a campaign in a unique and organic fashion.
LARGE WALLSCAPES
Giant Wallscapes are the cornerstone capability offered by our production team. Within the competitive industry of outdoor advertising,
Colossal continually makes it’s splash with these larger
than life, hand painted wallscapes. It was an almost
forgotten skill that Colossal has helped bring back to
life as we continue to grow.
We’ve been training a new generation of young artists to learn the difficult task of
painting these giant murals as purveyors of the hand paint tradition. We take a lot
of pride in our large walls and it takes many years of practice to achieve the skills
needed to make these things a reality. Dedication, pride, and attention to detail
are just some of the attributes required to be a Sky High muralist.
ART PROJECTS
We have always worked closely with the arts industry. While the bulk of our work comes from commercial advertising work, our fine art work is what truly sets us apart from other outdoor media companies.
Every year we have been asked to col-
laborate with multiple artists to deliver
large scale projects. These artists have
ranged from well known and established
to emerging ones just breaking into the
art world. Two years ago we worked with
Lisa Sanditz, Gary Hume and Alex Katz
to promote the Metropolitan Museum of
Art’s Van Gough Exhibit. We scouted and
produced site specific giant paintings
in high traffic areas of Manhattan. After
this project the New York Public Arts Fund
approached us with a project at the famed
Lever House building on Park Ave.
This building is the first all glass building in New York City and is a New York City Landmark. The artist was Sarah Morris
and the task at hand was to paint her sophisticated pattern work on the open air lobby’s ceiling which spanned an entire
city block. We worked 24 hours a day for two weeks straight in order to complete the project in time for the opening!
Whether it is painting a 300 foot wall on Coney Island’s boardwalk, flying to Austria to paint Gottfried Helnwein’s photo-realistic painting on a six story facade, or producing a custom campaign in New York for Banksy, Colossal has always given it’s special art projects the undivided dedication we feel they deserve.
CASE STUDY
BANKSYSolution: Colossal possesses the unique set
of capabilities required to accomplish this
project. Our Acquisition team dealt directly
with area landlords and partnered with two
other media companies to present a suite of
one of a kind locations to the Artist. The Art-
ist provided digital renderings of hand-drawn
sketches, which our paint team was able to
transfer directly, with 100% fidelity, to these
four massive wallscapes.
Colossal worked with the Artist’s team for
months on site acquisition and preparation.
Two of the four locations had never been used
for advertising purposes, and the Artist was
able to work with the dimensions and char-
acteristics of each wall to create pieces that
were playfully site-specific.
The placement of fine art on advertising spac-
es, by an advertising company, was in and of
itself a major focal point of the project. Colos-
sal’s role in the project was to function as any
other artist’s tool- as a means to an end. Our
ability to exactly translate the Artist’s vision,
while working within the confines of complete
secrecy and a strict timetable, was a challenge
Colossal is uniquely suited to meet.
Scenario: Banksy, an anonymous British artist with roots in the street art and graffiti movements,
wanted to place four large scale murals in and around New York’s SoHo in support of a pop-up
gallery running for only one month. The artist wanted placement on three major New York streets:
Broadway, Canal, and Houston; to be near the nexus of SoHo’s art gallery scene. Colossal had to
execute all four walls simultaneously while maintaining complete secrecy about the project.
Result: Four massive wallscapes on three of New York City’s most important thor-oughfares. International buzz was created from the first brushstroke, and the Artist remained anonymous. Colossal and Banksy received heavy press coverage, including: The New York Times, Gawker, New York Magazine, and Gothamist
Give Colossal Media a set of desired markets and demographics and
we do the rest. Within a week of arrival in the new market, we present
the client with a variety of options that meet the campaign goals along
with an intimate knowledge of the market’s demographics and overall
aesthetic. We manage and maintain all landlord relationships as well
as any permitting or other activity required by various city agencies.
With Colossal’s hand painted approach, we are able to go deeper into
any market than traditional billboard and advertising structures could
ever imagine. Using our hand painted approach, we incorporate archi-
tectural and structural building elements into the design space, giving
the client’s creative message endless possibilities and turning virtually
every surface into a potential creative medium. Colossal Media’s
murals have proven themselves to be an effective means to reaching even
the most niche markets.
In addition to our extensive national inventory, Colossal Media has the ability and expertise to provide custom acquisitions for any type of out-of-home campaign in all markets across the country. We pride ourselves in the ability go where no campaign has gone before to reach the clients’ target demographic and campaign goals in a unique and exciting fashion.
CUSTOM ACQUISITIONS
CASE STUDY
PBRScenario: In 2008 Pabst Blue Ribbon ran a mural campaign made up
of artwork submitted by fans of the brand.
After a successful run in established markets, for 2009 Pabst Blue
Ribbon wanted to branch out and break into new markets that did not
have established media space for non-traditional outdoor advertising.
They did not want to just book a couple billboards and call it a day, so
they called Colossal Media to see if we could help.
Solution: Colossal possesses the unique set
of capabilities required to accomplish this
project. The custom acquisitions team hit the
road for the next several months, going from
city to city, dealing directly with landlords and
securing inventory that was ideal for Pabst
Blue Ribbon. We worked side by side with
the creative agency, making sure we got them
exactly what they needed in each market. By
spending time in each market, we were able to
get a feel for where PBR should have a pres-
ence and create the biggest impact.
This process also included market rides with
the agency and client in each market.
All the media space acquired was fully permit-
ted; this was not a guerilla-marketing project,
Colossal Media worked with local expediters
and city governments to secure permits for
each location. After all was said and done,
Colossal established 7 new markets for PBR.
Result: A massive coast-to-coast multi-city campaign! With hand paint-ed ads now running in more then 10 cities on walls acquired and painted by Colossal Media, it is safe to say that the project was a huge success.
