And so we have hit the half way mark for term 2 already! Howtime speeds away when you are a busy Preppy!

In science we had to design and make a wind catcher usingnatural and man mad materials. We discovered that certainmaterials are much stronger and weather proof than others. You can see them hanging in the window of the prepclassroom. It was tricky having to tie knots and get ourdecorations to stay on. We worked very hard and we are superpleased with our results.

Our prep pride project is the garden outside our room. It islooking a little dull at the moment so we are going to have a

crazy hair day on Friday the 28th of May. If you wish to be part ofthe craziness please bring a gold coin donation. All funds raisedwill go towards making our garden look fresh and wonderfulagain.

Enjoy the rest of the week and keep up the good work!

PlayingPlaying ourour partpart toto buildbuild aa nationalnational picturepicture ofof childchildhealthhealthIn early 2021, our school, along with thousands of othersacross the country will begin preparations for the fifth AustralianEarly Development Census (AEDC). The AEDC gives usa national picture of the development, health and wellbeingof children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009,the census results have helped communities, schools andgovernments plan services and develop better policies to targetsupport for children and families.Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’tneed to supply schools with any new information for thecensus. The AEDC gives us data at a school and communitylevel - it isn’t an assessment of individual children. Some teachers have also noticed that completing the

assessments made them more aware of the needs of individualchildren and the class as a whole and that the census resultsare useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developingclass programs.Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’tneed to take any action unless they choose not to include theirchildren in the census. To find out more about the census and how communities areusing the data to help children and families visit the AEDCwebsite: www.aedc.gov.au.If you have any questions, you can contact David King – 40869333 [email protected]

Year 1/2Year 1/2

In Technology, we will be making a puppet that moves so wehave been looking at materials that would be suitable to use likesocks, paper bags, egg cartons and paper plates. We madean octopus using an egg carton and crepe paper and anotherpuppet using two paper plates for a big wide-open mouth andtwo egg cartons for the eyes. Just a heads-up mums and dads, now that students have an idea of making puppets, they willbe on the look out at home for suitable materials for their ownpuppet.

As you may have noticed, the Sight Words system has changedthis past week. Sight Words will now be glued into a separatebook so that as soon as words are tested, a new sheet cango home the same day so students can start practising readyfor their next test. This book needs to stay in the home readerfolder for easy access by Mrs Ashford.

Half way through the term already!!

Year 3/4Year 3/4

Great job to Year 3 students for completing the NAPLAN Onlinetest last week. We are back to our normal routines and weare going to be busy completing assessments for the next fourweeks. Please send me an email if your child will be absentduring this time.

In Science, students have been investigating how heat energyis produced and the behaviour of heat when it transfers fromone object or area to another. Through this, they have beenexploring how heat can be observed by touch and that formalmeasurements of the amount (temperature) can be taken usinga thermometer. Yesterday, students worked co-operatively insmall groups to conduct a ‘Porridge investigation’ and it wasimpressing to see them so engaged recording and analysingtheir findings. The assessment task requires students to createa scientific report, that is, they are required to provide adviceon how to heat up cold water without the use of cookingequipment or a fire.

In order to reduce the amount of workload and create anexciting assessment, I have integrated their English assessmentwith their Media Arts assessment. This means, that once thestudents have completed writing their story (imaginative text)about overcoming a fear, they will then transfer their writingusing a software called ‘storyboardthat.com.’ It is fantastic tosee them so eager to create their character animation. Oncestudents have completed their storyboard, they will then publishtheir final assessment using a PowerPoint presentation andtheir piece of work will be presented in front of the class.

Both grades are currently undertaking their 2nd assessments inMaths. Next week, they will be learning about the concepts ofodd and even numbers. Please continue to help your childrenwith their multiplication and division tables at home. Yoursupport with our learning is much appreciated.

In technologies wehad some practice coding on Scratch, now we will continue ourassessment task and develop a maze game. We have chosena song in English to analyse for our poetry unit- we have pickedit to pieces, finding examples of metaphors, alliteration andrepetition.
