Principal’s Message: EHMIS and SWSD Recognize Outstanding

Educators

South Western School District and EHMIS are fortunate to have caring educa-

tors who are dedicated preparing our learners to be successful scholars, produc-

ers, consumers, and citizens. Earlier this spring, we celebrated Teacher Appre-

ciation Week where we recognized all of the efforts of our outstanding teachers.

During this week, many of our teachers received notes, cards, and emails from

students and parents expressing their appreciation for all that they do. On behalf

of our faculty, we are very appreciative of these kind words and the time many

members of our Colt Community took to express their appreciation.

Every April, we also recognize outstanding teachers at every level through our

Teacher of the Year program. Each year, one Teacher of the Year recipient and

two finalists are chosen by their colleagues to receive this honor. This year, our

Teacher of the Year recipient was Melissa Wilson. Mrs. Wilson is our gifted

education teacher at both EHMIS and the high school. She also serves as an ad-

visor for the Technology Student Association (TSA), and is involved in a variety

of building and district level committees and initiatives. Our two finalists were

seventh grade science teacher Zane Grindle and seventh grade social studies

teacher R.J. Long. Mr. Grindle is involved in a variety of student activities in-

cluding street hockey, and Mr. Long serves as one of our schools Student Coun-

cil advisors. Like Mrs. Wilson, both Mr. Grindle and Mr. Long are involved in

various school committees and initiatives.

These three outstanding educators are just a sample of the dedicated, knowl-

edgeable, and innovative practitioners we have at EHMIS. Our faculty members

are on the cutting edge of instructional practice, adolescent development, and

current educational trends. They work tirelessly to provide the best educational

opportunities for all of our learners, and to develop learning experiences that

meet all learners at their current level and provide learner voice and choice.

During the upcoming summer months, while learners are on vacation, our facul-

ty team will collectively accumulate hundreds of hours on professional develop-

ment and growth activities, curriculum writing, and other professional endeav-

ors.

One week of recognition is not nearly enough for all of the time and energy our

teachers spend working to improve the lives of the learners in our community.

On behalf of all of the faculty and staff at EHMIS, we appreciate the continued

support of our students, parents, and community members in helping to create

the ideal middle level learning experience.

Four members of the Maker Club took the K’Nex Challenge this spring at the Lincoln Inter-

mediate Unit. The team of Cora Rebert, Brandon Fincham, Joshwa Goldstein, and Theodore

Miller accepted the challenge to build a structure at least a meter tall that could hold weight

using a K’Nex Stem Design Challenge kit supplied by the Fisher Scientific Corp. and the LIU.

In addition to designing the building, the team had to submit a narrative of their process, a

blueprint, and a budget sheet. The team worked together to come up with a design that met all

the criteria and re-built the entire structure at the LIU on the morning of the competition. Each

of the team members presented a part of their design to the judges. The K’Nex Challenge

team represented EHMIS well in their first time participating in this competition. They

learned some valuable lessons in principles of structures as well as teamwork. They also came

away with some new ideas for improvements and are looking forward to next year’s challenge.

CONGRATULATIONS...

Exciting news for Art class!

The new kiln is finally up and running! Art students have been busy creating

clay mugs and coil pottery which can now be fired in a modern, reliable and

efficient kiln. A special thank you goes to the Republican Club of Hanover

for the generous donation that funded the purchase of the new Dragon Kiln.

The eighth graders are sculpting architectural houses in Mrs. McElhany’s art room. From two-dimensional sketches to three-dimensional forms, the unit challenges learners to research, plan, design, and build a house out of clay. Focusing on architecture façades, learners rolled, pinched, and twisted lumps of clay to create their hollow forms. The surfaces of these forms were then cut and carved to form windows and doors. Other features such as balconies and staircases were added using small slabs and coils. Once dry, the architectures were fired to 1800°F in the kiln turning the clay into ceramic. The pieces were then glazed different colors and fired again.

Mrs. McElhany selected several of the finished architectures to represent Emory H. Markle Intermediate School in the 19th Annual National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition held from March 16th-19th in Kansas City, Missouri. Unlike other exhibitions, this one is juried which means that a professional ceramic artist judges all the submissions and chooses the best pieces to display at the exhibition. This year over 1,300 entries were submitted from across the coun-try. The juror, Jack Troy, selected 154 for display in the exhibition. Isabella Lang’s ceramic sculpture entitled “A Child’s Safe Haven” was one of the ones selected for the show. Inspired by the woods in her backyard and her Dad’s woodworking hobby, Bella wanted to make some-thing that involved trees. She sees her sculpture as a tree house and describes it as “a place where you can go and relax and get away from your problems.” Excited about her acceptance into the exhibition Bella said, “I never thought that [my piece] would get into something like this…that there would be people from all over the world seeing it…that made me really proud.” Bella won two additional awards at the exhibition. “A Child’s Safe Haven” received an Artistic Merit Award and a Ci Products Award.

SUNSCREEN 101

Sunscreens are products combining several ingredients that help prevent the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin. Two types of ultraviolet radiation, UVA and UVB, damage the skin, age it prematurely, and increase your risk of skin cancer.

UVB is the chief culprit behind sunburn, while UVA rays, which penetrate the skin

more deeply, are associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and other light-induced effects of aging (photoaging). They also exacerbate the carcinogenic effects of UVB rays, and increasingly are being seen as a cause of skin cancer on their own. Sunscreens vary in their ability to protect against UVA and UVB.

Most sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher do an excellent job of protecting against UVB. SPF — or Sun Protection Factor — is a measure of a sunscreen's ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin.

SPF 15 filters out approximately 93 percent of all incoming UVB rays. SPF 30 keeps out 97 percent and SPF 50 keeps out 98 percent.

Anyone over the age of six months should use a sunscreen daily.
